Book #4 of the year This book by @jordan.b.peterson was the best book I have read in my 19 years. It not only opened my eyes to things I have to improve to be better man and person I general, but also got me asking a lot of questions about where I am in my life, where I want to go, and what it means to have purpose. I share this because reading this book has opened my eyes to truly start working on not just my physical self, but all of myself and I feel it would also help anyone else, who is reading this, as well. As we tied up the dugout canoe I spotted this woman weaving a fishing net on the porch of her raised long house, back from the river. I approached quietly while my guide explained to two other villagers who we were and why we were there. I stopped by a tree to the left of the porch, put my camera (@Nikon F2 with a 180mm f2.8 lens) to my eye and waited. After what seemed like an age she looked up and noticed me and I took the picture. A moment later she was gone and I did not see her again during my stay. This was in the late Spring of 1981. The book that resulted from these travels, covering all the different island groups of Indonesia, was a work of three years traveling by plane, boat, car, donkey and on foot, shooting #Nikon, #Leica and #Hasselblad gear, with delicate heat and moisture sensitive #kodakfilm processed by pro-labs in Germany. The book was well received and re-printed many times over the following two decades. Their parents worked in Desa Lobo, a day’s journey away by dugout canoe. Every fortnight the grandfather would paddle to Desa Lobo to trade yams, fish and coconuts for other supplies. The book, covering all the different island groups of Indonesia, was a work of three years shooting #Nikon, #Leica and #Hasselblad gear, with #kodakfilm processed by pro-labs in Germany. I caught a number of unpleasant bugs and was robbed of all my gear (in Bali of all places), which insurance of course didn’t quite cover. But I met some amazing people, saw wonderful things in a beautiful country, and learnt how lucky we really are in the West. We have little to complain about. He was found in the Mississippi 6 weeks later. So many times in my life I wished I could call up the man responsible for me being here, just to ask simple questions. “How are you? Did you see that fight last night? How would you handle this? Can I swing by later?” But that’s not how it worked out. I’m a grown man, but still to this day that little boy wonders so many things… I’ll never get to hear the answers besides the truth that I can feel in my heart. There is no such thing as a life without trauma.. look in its eyes and let it know you’re willing to wrestle with it and lose. Be willing to lose again and again until eventually the sting turns into a gentle reminder of life’s lessons. That love is pain’s better looking cousin. Why Your Mom Told You To Stand Up Straight ✨ Good posture is crucial to your overall well being. Your posture influences your movements, your comfort, your balance, and even your appearance. Maintaining good posture ensures that your bones are in proper alignment - preventing pain, issues, and injury. Proper posture prevents weight and tension from being unevenly distributed to your muscles and ligaments. And your posture determines the amount of weight and pressure on your joints. Studies even show that some people perceive individuals with poor posture to have low self esteem, lack of confidence, lack of ability, and to be unapproachable. Another study conducted at Ohio State University in 2009 found that sitting up straight in your chair can give you more confidence. Researchers found that people who were sitting up straight were more likely to believe the positive thoughts they wrote down concerning whether they were qualified for a job. Those who were slouched over were less likely to believe their thoughts. So it’s pretty obvious: posture is important! There is a reason your mom was always telling you to stand up straight. :) But we often subconsciously start to slump throughout the day… as we get tired or comfortable. This simple hack can help you maintain proper posture throughout the day: ✨ Pull your belly button in, roll your shoulders up and then push them back and down, slightly tilt your chin up. ✨ Get in the habit of consciously doing this move whenever you change positions, stand up, and sit down.
