- Albert Embankment SE1 170 years after Albert Embankment was built to create space for Joseph Bazalgette’s world first urban sewer system, it will finally get its first intercepting sewer in 2025 when Tideway opens. South London was still rural Surrey in his day but this is still a raw deal over raw sewage and doesn’t bode well for a timeframe on the Bakerloo Line Extension… Bazalgette’s sewers linked 1100 miles of ceramic pipes to 82 miles of intercepting sewers. These are like churches to sanitation where the first steps of treating sewage occurs and they prevent excess overflows into the Thames. The rest of South London has these intercepting sewers but Albert Embankment is home to the outflow of the River Effra which combines with the Camberwell Storm Overflow and simply cascades straight in the river here. This outflow alone dumps roughly 300,000 tonnes of raw sewage a year in the Thames. Tideway is a 25 kilometre long super sewer that runs under the Thames protecting the city to a population of 35 million. They have factored in that people’s use of wipes and other non flushables is equivalent to the system dealing with two extra people. Albert Embankment will also get three new public gardens of reclaimed land in the river and some beautiful artwork celebrating the Effra and its industrial history. You are encouraged to keep an eye out for lions. If you know the riverside this makes sense. A view looking down into The Park ‘bowl’ from Newcastle Drive, on top of The Park Tunnel. This is the return view of the last post. In a few weeks time there will be less of a view as the leaves return to the trees. The Park Tunnel was commissioned to allow horse-drawn carriages from Derby Road into the Estate before the entrances from Lenton Sands (The Walton’s/North Road/Derby Road) and Castle Boulevard had been created (or indeed before Castle Boulevard had been built). Designed by Nottingham architect TC Hine, the tunnel was completed on 11 May 1855. On opening, it was discovered that the gradient of the road was 1 in 12 rather than the planned 1in 14 and was too steep for horse-drawn carriages, defeating the object of its construction. SECR O1 No 65 visited from the @bluebell_railway joining the recently restored London and South Western Railway T3 563, with U-Boat 31806 and Bulleid Pacific 34028 ‘Eddystone’ all working to deliver a comprehensive service across the line, and reenactors in period costumes added an extra dimension to the event, transporting visitors to a bygone Victorian age.
