As it so happens, I’ve had a very productive first week of May. My main goal for this month is to complete the worldbuilding development for my novel. 👨🏼💻📚Back to Reality📚👨🏼💻 Yesterday I was lounging in 25+ degree heat and glorious sunshine in Lanzarote, drinking vodka slushy smoothies. Now, I’m back in the much cooler United Kingdom and back at my desk to return to work on my WIP. My wife and I had a great 11 days away and it was exactly what we both needed. We relaxed, we enjoyed ourselves with day trips, I turned my pasty white complexion into a regular Caucasian skin tone, and I read 7 books. I’m feeling mentally refreshed now and ready to get back to work on the novel. It felt strange taking such a long break from writing it as I don’t normally do that. Now I just have to hope my tactic of stopping in the middle of the scene to help me get back into the story will actually work. Fingers crossed. I feel like I’ve hardly been posting anything on my writing feed, and recently I figured out why. It’s because I’ve hardly been doing anything worth posting about… Apart from Thursday mornings with my amazing Write Club, life has sort of ground to a halt for me recently. It’s mostly been work and driving (🤢). So going on a bush walk with my parents on the weekend was a real breath of fresh air. The view was incredible - and I read a plaque on the way down that said the rocks at Lesmurdie Falls are some of the oldest in the world - formed 2.6 billion years ago. It’s moments like that where I feel re-grounded. I am less than a grain of sand in the scheme of time, and sometimes it’s nice to remember that. I only write when it’s midnight, but here are a few moody daylight glimpses into the space that’s held my heart together and acted as a receptacle for the tears often required as payment from writers. It’s home to my favorite coffee/tea mug (thoughtfully gifted to me on a random weekday by my sweet husband- SJM universe, anyone?), record player that’s taking a brief break from TTPD, a plethora of friendship bracelets, Polaroids that symbolize 26 years of friendship, a scene from my favorite movie (Almost Famous), a copy of ‘If It Calls Your Name’ by Brett Gordon, my brand new Throne of Glass special edition hardbacks, and a gaming controller buried in a corner that hasn’t seen much use since I transitioned to PC gaming. Essentially, all my favorite creature comforts reside here along with the worlds dancing in my head. Today is a rough mental health day. It’s also a work day, so I’m taking steps to accommodate this as best I can. That includes my favourite food (gluten free chicken nuggies) and one of my favourite energy drinks. I’m also journaling during my lunch break using pretty colours. @mommacusses talks about foods being ‘good for your body’ and ‘good for your brain’ and today is a day where I’m trying to balance both (I had pear slices with breakfast chips) but also understand that my brain needs a little more support than my body. You can call it an upgrade if you'd like, but now I have a more defined space for my writing. Now it really feels like a new room lol. The days are warmer which means we'll be having the air conditioner on. Which also means, I'll be getting cold lol. Billy loves the room cold. He sleeps better. He came up with the idea of taking the blanket off the wall and putting it in the doorway that leads to my little corner and the bathroom. Though the blanket doesn't reach the floor, it still makes a difference in the room's temperature. And I feel like there's a wall there. And this space is a little brighter now! It's been a week since the blanket went up and I love it. It does make the space feel smaller, which I don't like since the room is already small, but I do love my little writing nook. It feels like a proper office space to me. Laughing, I told Billy I needed to pin something to the blanket so it feels more like a wall. He didn't get the joke. Okay, back to work I go. Fairytale's Dream is finished, but I wrote it kind of fast so I'm in the process of filling in all the blanks. Call it the second draft. It's coming along nicely! When round one was finished, I ended with just over 18K which is way shorter than I want. But the foundation is there. I just have to build it up! I’ve got a test this weekend, a physical at my doc (ugh I’m not thrilled😖) and I think that’s all for the extra curricular chaos and it’ll be back to just normal life craziness…. Hello from the #writingspace! Got a #writingupdate for ya! . A couple projects are coming along well. I've discovered working on more than one thing is useful for my #writingprocess. When one gets stuck, I work on the other one until it either gets finished or stuck as well. I've discovered that your subconscious seems to still work on the story that's blocked while you're focused on a different project. When you switch back to the one that was blocked, often the answers are there waiting for you. . My second project is sort of my own version of The Shining, except that instead of a haunted hotel, it's about a haunted ranch in Nevada, a young boy who spends a summer there with his uncle, and the dark secrets he uncovers. Do you hand over writing tasks that include homework, processing, articulation and expression to a select few? Writers of content? Do the select few depend on inputs from you, and the team, and perhaps popular AI tools, to write that desired blog, presentation, report, summary, proposal or training guide? Group work with a writing coach and consultant may result in creating an awareness of:- (1)A team's collective understanding of the language of ideas and concepts that the team shares. This is a collective flow of thought, feelings and expression. It is internal, external, individual, and group flow. (2) Why this is important. (3) How to identify, document and support the evolution of a language, that individuals, teams and the organisation can tap into, recognise, and engage with - as well as use as a teaching, training tool. One of my favorite Estate Sale finds ever was an antique Blanket Box cover that was in the back of an old shed. Lonely and forgotten I cleaned it, oiled it and it became a focal point in my art room. ( swipe all the way for that old image). I would put my #olw on it for inspiration and focus. I was worried how I could use it in my new space, and I decided to set up a sacred space to meditate, pray and write, so it became a makeshift low table top. Today I found a new writing spot. It has the right light. The space is filled with plants, is over looked over by trees and the cafe knows how to do proper toast! I have several writing stations in public spaces dotted around the city. But tomorrow morning my writing station is the company of an amazing group of global women in our weekly virtual writing space. To register go to the link on my bio. It’s free. We start at 7am GMT and finish at 8.30am. You do not need to call yourself a writer to join. All you need is a willingness to indulge in either a 7-minute journaling prompt each session and a short grounding meditation. Then spend the next 45-mins working on whatever you want. Women have described how comforting it feels to be working away on their side of the camera but being able to look up and see that they are not alone is what matters. It’s been described as the best tonic for the morning.
