I can never tell. 😅) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Come take a stroll down memory lane, from starting my business from my couch with the help of the smallest assistant to expanding my operation enough to earn myself a whole room for an office and a shelf full of incredible books I’ve been able to help authors bring into the world. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ These snapshots mean so damn much because they mark the milestones of a journey that can be hard to document in film. So much of the inspiration, challenge, and triumph of the publishing process is contained in word processors, text, spreadsheets, and graphs, but each photo here is a reminder of the growth and transformation that is possible when you never settle for good enough. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This journey has been nothing short of magical. Tips on how to beat writer’s block ✍️ I’ve worked with hundreds of students over the years, and the biggest challenge most folks deal with is writer’s block. But what does that mean exactly? I’ve found that many people don’t realize that *they* themselves are the block. I always say that we come to writing with our whole selves. Every critical voice that talked down to us, every chaotic thought of our distracted and tired brains, every worry we have about our own value…all of that shows up in our writing practice and can get in the way of the actual writing! Most of the 1-on-1 work I do with my mentees addresses how to get out of our own way. Because it’s not that you don’t have things to write about! It’s that you haven’t learned to trust your process yet, because you don’t know what your process is, because you keep interrupting it with your perfectionism and criticism and unkindness! At times I feel like a fisherman when I write. Casting lines into the depths and hoping that something resonates enough to cause a ripple effect. Often times I spend hours working, hoping for a bite but getting nothing but silence. It’s disheartening, I won’t pretend otherwise. But I keep going, Because I know that the reward comes to the patient and consistent. Overtime I’ve come to love it purely for the act, not the reward. And now I enjoy being on the water simply for the sake of it. Though the company that’s come with me is lovely too. ——————————————————
Indie author’s challenges: people who discourage you🤨🧐🙄😴 ⠀ If you choose the path of an indie author, you are bound to meet people who will make you want to quit. People who will try to cheat you by offering useless marketing services to promote your books. People who will tell you that you will never achieve success. People who will lose interest in your books without reading them after you tell them the amount you receive in royalties. ⠀ Some of us are lucky to have supportive family and friends. Yet, for many of us, our writing journey remains a solitary endeavour. ⠀ Since I’m among those authors who don’t have an extensive network of supportive relatives and friends, I try to understand what prevents people from cheering up those who decided to follow their dreams. ⠀ ✅ Family ⠀ I think that the hardest is when your family don’t support you. I’ve talked to someone on one of my social media accounts, and they shared that neither their spouse nor children think they have the right to spend the time they could spend tending to the garden on ‘scribbling’. “You’ll never get published,” the loving relatives say. ⠀ ✅ Friends ⠀ I consider myself fortunate that my closest friend supports me on my writing journey. Other friends are indifferent at best. ⠀ ✅ Acquaintances ⠀ I’ve been told by an acquaintance that ‘nowadays, everyone writes’, and, to be honest, I didn’t quite understand what they meant by it. Either to prevent me from boasting – which I never do – or maybe, and I’m inclined to believe that it is so, they needed to assure themselves of their own lifestyle’s value. ⠀ I finish my musings on a positive note. Our May Artist-at-the-Barn is Phillip Burke! Bio: Phillip Gregory Burke is a Black American of Haitian, Creole and Gullah-Geechee descent, New York City artivist, actor and playwright. Born in Syracuse, NY, he was raised in Auburn, NY, where his family has lived since December 24, 1858. The Auburn Education Foundation, inducted him into the Auburn Alumni Hall of Distinction in May 2023, for his “life’s work as an accomplished actor and playwright.” He attended Syracuse University, receiving a BFA in Drama from The College of Visual and Performing Arts, Department of Drama & BS in Sociology from The Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. He was the recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Community Service: Civic Engagement for rebuilding New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Post undergrad, he worked at Binghamton University’s Upward Bound Program before moving overseas to The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, where he attended The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, receiving his MA in Classical and Contemporary Text: Acting. He holds the distinction of being the first Black person awarded this degree. He also trained at Shakespeare’s Globe Education and The Alexander Gibson School of Opera. Today's #WriterFriendsChallenge is to introduce a side character in your story. One of my side characters in Jane's story is her grandmother, Ana. Ana is the daughter of Eastern European immigrants, and though she was born in Europe, she has lived in the US since she was seven (except for that two year stint after college where she went back to Europe to "find herself"). Born in 1937, she moved to the US in 1944 with her parents, struggled to assimilate, but eventually did.🌍 Ana is a spicy, sarcastic, and saucy grandmother. She's not above playing practical jokes, but she'll also brook no nonsense. She hides family secrets from Jane and only reveals them when Jane desperately needs the information. Have a beautiful weekend💙 ⠀ I hope you have tons of exciting things plans for the weekend. ⠀ I’m spending my time mostly with my son, for my husband is preparing for an extremely challenging exam he has to take next week. One might think that he is already over-qualified for most jobs, but he disagrees. ⠀ In the morning, I sat with my son while he played the piano - he has his final yearly exams at the music school next month - and then we watched an animation movie together. Now, after lunch, we plan to go for a walk on the beach or, if it’s too windy by the sea, in the forest along our favourite paved path. Last month, I had an awesome meeting with Jessie from @bookblurbmagic to work on---you guessed it---the blurb for All the Flowers I Love are Weeds! Sometimes during the healing process, we forget to take a look back and reflect on how far we’ve come. I’ve been deep into healing for the last four years now, ever since my youngest son was born and I developed #postpartumdepression . When he was just a few months old I realized something was off. I wasn’t detached from my baby, but I was from just about EVERYTHING else. My OBGYN put me on antidepressants, and about a month in I decided to make the jump back into talk therapy, for the first time in over 10 years. It was there I found out that I wasn’t just suffering from postpartum depression, or the normal depression and anxiety I had throughout my life, no, it turns out I have Complex PTSD, because of so many different traumas in my life, some I had yet to even really know about. I’m not going to lie to you, I was a complete mess for the first two years of healing. Repressed memories of #childhoodtrauma popped up in my #EMDR therapy that prolonged the healing process and made it more difficult. So difficult in fact, that I didn’t even realize I’ve been on this #healingjourney for four years now, until writing this post. I’ve really come so far, I’m honestly pretty happy on the day to day, and I don’t think I’ve ever been able to say that in my life. So if you’ve been on a healing journey for some time now, I ask you to reflect on it today.
