The entrepreneur who made the biggest impact on me in 2023 (and so far in 2024) is Dan Martell. I want him to impact you, too. Why Dan? BURNOUT & how Iām trying to avoid it Iāve included a snapshot from a chapter from one of the books Iāve read during this challenge āThe Power of Disciplineā. This chapter was called āHow to Avoid Burnoutā and honestly it got me thinking as to how Iāve avoided burnout, because it is Day 55 now, I could easily be so burnt out and have given up by now if I didnāt implement the below things. And the book says that burnout does not just creep up on you which is so true, no one feels totally fine on a Monday and totally burnt out on a Tuesday. What happens is that it accumulates over time and in order to prevent it you must pay attention to how you are feeling and ensure you have strategies in place to not stretch yourself too far. Strategies that have helped me: - exercising with friends - eating enough food / fuelling my body (this is not a weight loss challenge im NOT trying to eat in a calorie deficit for 75 days straight) - getting 8 hours of sleep a night - listening to my body, such as in terms of what workout I do and what time of the day I want to do it - having alone / me time - having someone to keep you accountable and helping them stay accountable- @gymwith.ems - writing to do lists each and everyday #burnout #75hardchallenge #75hard #avoidingburnout #personaltrainer #training #discipline #determination #motivation #exercise #workout #planning #organisation #challenge #gym #gymmotivation #consistency

We have a few important changes to share with you, that weāve made for the sake of our sanity and to prevent burn out. 1)we will only be at @brunswickfarmersmarket on FRIDAYS this season! We will still be at @brunswicktopsham market on Saturdays and @thelostkitchen on Tuesdays. 2) we have always made SO MANY DIFFERENT PRODUCTS, which is hard to keep up with. Also several of the products we made actually LOST us money last year (looking at you, ricotta). Iāve continued to make them because customers love them, but it just doesnāt make any financial sense to continue making them. Therefore we will NOT be making certain products that do not make us profit anymore- which is : kefir, ricotta, feta and ice cream. I know, I know, people will be upset. Americans have a bad habit of leaving Paid Time Off on the table. In addition to feeling overwhelmed with their workload, there can also be stigma around taking time off if others aren't doing it too. According to Pew research, 49% of employees don't take PTO because they worry about falling behind at work, 43% feel bad about having co-workers take on additional work, and 19% think taking time off might hurt their chances for career advancement. ā”ļø Rest and recovery is critical to work performance. The longer time you have without taking a vacation, the worse decisions you could make. You need that vacationāand avoiding burnout starts at the top. Leaders in the business need to be setting an example to encourage mental and physical restāwhich will in turn improve employee retention and productivity. Learning to put up boundaries and take time for myself. I was getting burnt out from grooming, the one thing in my life I love more than my family. I started taking off weekends, cutting my service area and raising my prices. I put stress on my body, my family and my car. I donāt answer text messages after 7pm or the weekends, Iāve let clients go that donāt bring me joy. But most of all Iām making myself the biggest priority first and foremost, itās been awhile since I felt happy in a very long time. Hereās a reminder that sometimes, things donāt always go your way. Even when you prepare. Or your intentions are good. Even when youāre in the right, and someone else is in the wrong, and they come out on top. But if you focus only on the losses, and not remember the wins you have had, then life can start to feel hard or overwhelming. Usually, you end up beating yourself up too much when you focus on the negative. What you could have or should have done differently. If only you hadnāt said that or thought that, then you would have had a different outcome. If only that thing had or hadnāt happened that was totally out of your control. What I am saying is that if you are beating yourself up over something, maybe for today, let it go. Drop that emotional load. Give yourself permission to feel what it feels like not to carry it around, just for today. Chalk it up to the fact that in life, sometimes things just donāt go the way you hope they will. Maybe that is because there is something better just around the corner, or it is a lesson that you need to learn to get to the next level. Who can you encourage and empower today? A few years ago my buddy Adam Miller volunteered to help me learn how to play spikeball. He was super good at it, and he was so patient with me while I learned the rules, messed up a ton, and got my footing underneath me. More than that, he gave me constant encouragement, at the tiniest improvements or after I messed up and cost him the game. After a few games, I started to really get it, but I donāt think that I would have been confident enough to keep playing with really good players if I didnāt have him in my ear the whole time telling me that I was doing great and giving me pointers. His encouragement gave me confidenceāand I realized that some of my biggest breakthroughs have come from mentors and friends who encouraged me to take that leap of faith, to start that business, or to try that one thing I had been resistingāthat helped me break through to the next level. The thing about burnout is that many people don't tend to notice it happening to them until they're feeling it very intensely. But, there are signs burnout is setting in long before we reach that point. In my book, The Ultimate Anxiety Toolkit, I talk about how we go up and down with stress all day long, and that there are subtle signs our stress is starting to rise throughout the day. Learn to be more sensitive to these signs of stress rising, and you can catch it and bring your stress down in small degrees, before it gets to a high stress level of burnout. Give yourself many breaks to reset and rest. Take walks to break up the work day, or find ways to get outside and look around at things. Give yourself days to do nothing, to play, to get creative, to do other things that interest you outside of work. In addition to spiritual practices, taking care of oneās physical and mental well-being is essential in avoiding burnout. Getting enough rest, eating nutritious foods, and staying hydrated are all important factors in maintaining energy levels and focus during the month of Ramadan. It is also beneficial to engage in activities that bring joy and relaxation, such as spending time with loved ones, going for a walk, or practicing mindfulness. By prioritizing self-care and balance, you can ensure that they finish Ramadan feeling spiritually fulfilled and rejuvenated.
One of my previous posts was about avoiding burnout, specifically from one of Mike Reinoldās Youtube videos. This video was about avoiding burnout from the beginning and the article I am going to reference is about an unconventional way to recover from burnout. Both of these sources discuss how burnout can affect a PTās career and life and tell us that there is not one specific way to recover from burnout. This shows us that every physical therapist is going to have a different experience with burnout and each recovery will not look the same. Based on my reading of these two sources, I have created a list of recommendations for either recovering burnout or avoiding it all together.
