Normally at this time of year I would be completing final preparations for the upcoming Sugar Land Arts Fest. Unfortunately this year it happens to fall on the same weekend as the MS 150 bike ride. The MS 150 is a 150 mile bike ride over two days that is organized by the National MS Society, which aims to raise awareness and funds for those impacted by Multiple Sclerosis. It has been incredibly inspiring, since becoming involved, to learn more about this cause and to hear about the advancements being made to combat this horrible disease. So if you’ve been wondering why I haven’t really been posting on here much lately, and especially why I’ve not been posting new work, now you know why. As you can imagine, training to ride 150 miles over two days (essentially 75 miles per day) takes a lot of time - especially when you are starting where I was! Before January, the furthest I’d ever ridden at one time was 12 miles, and I didn’t even own a road bike. But I was looking for a new challenge this year and with this, I certainly got one - plus so much more! I’m incredibly proud to be doing this as a part of the awesome @saintarnoldbiketeam. Our team has raised the second highest amount of funds to combat MS - funds I know will be put to good use! I just adore this piece of art called ‘strong desire’. Looking at the piece and reading the title can’t you just feel the strong desire within the work and its energy? Within it, there are so many elements I can’t get my eyes off, but the one piece that stands out most for me is the delicate yet sturdy handmade paper carton, placed boldly over parts of the paint. It has such a beautifully soft and wavy look. I’m a paper artist, which means I adore paper in all its forms. I use pre-made paper, either by a machine or preferably by hand. However part of my practice is also making my own paper and carton. It’s not something I see many artists do, but I do enjoy the control you have over the final structure and the surface of the paper. I love the feeling of the paper pulp, putting my hands in the cold and soft pulp is wonderfully grounding. Each type of paper, I’m making calls for different ways of using the paper pulp and the raw material. It’s a slow process, especially carton needs a lot of time to dry out. In our fast-paced time, I love how the tradition of handmade papermaking just never gets old, and doing it right is something that can’t be sped up. For me making paper and working with it is just the most wonderful way to create a ‘delighted soul’. — ‘strong desire’, part of the collection ‘delighted soul’, 17,1 x 17,4 cm (6,73 x 6,85 inches), acrylic paint and handmade paper on Auqarellkarton 300g/m2, acid-free.

AT LONG LAST. Featured on my blog this week, Ashley and Leo's amazing, maximalist chic art gallery inspired wedding at @manitobamuseum. I love blogging but some weddings are slightly intimidating because I think, how can I possibly tell the story of this day, and do full justice to all of the amazing bits and pieces of it? This wedding is one of those. There was no desire to keep anything "simple" here, and I was all for it. We opted to create multiple focal moments throughout the wedding, creating a memorable flow and killer design. A meadow aisle and colourful chuppah gave way to ikebana-inspired arrangements on the tables (reception post coming soon!), bold colour and pattern, and a dramatic hanging floral installation above the patterned dance floor. We tied together fun and engaging, with elegant and chic, and in my humble opinion, it was totally perfect.
