After missing out on seeing DUNE on the big screen it was a pleasure to see DUNE: PART TWO last night how Denis Villeneuve intended it to be seen—that undoubtedly added to the experience. That said though, I still wouldn’t say DUNE: PART TWO achieved ‘masterpiece’ status; perhaps controversially it doesn’t even crack my personal top three if we’re looking at Villeneuve’s filmography. Here’s my updated ranking, with the Canadian’s true masterpiece sitting pretty at the top. Villeneuve is undeniably one of the finest filmmakers working today and over the past decade he’s cemented himself as someone who demands appointment viewing. Ohh seems like Denis Villeneuve was so much into deserts, time, human nature and the relation of humans with nature right from his feature debut AUGUST 32ND ON EARTH (1998) where he also seems to be a total French New Wave boi before he changed gears... ***SPOILER ALERT*** The film opens with a car crash sequence straight away where the editing puts us literally in the driver's seat of Simone who feels drowsy and so does the frame blackout in tune with her where the accident is not shown literally but through a fade to black or rather the title that says 'August 32nd on Earth' and the man who picks her (no major visible injury either) up on the road in taking her to hospital has a broken watch that says the date as August 32nd Friday - as if Simone's time on earth ended and a rebirth (I love the literal upside down shot of Simone we get in the car about this) of sorts began with extra days added to August in form of August 32nd to 36th during which the rest of the film unfolds and what makes the time to return to normal in September month towards the end is a part of what makes this usual rebirth of sorts narrative more surreally special for me than what meets the eye! Based on the deal made by Simone and Philippe to have a baby together in case neither of them found someone to have a baby with or on their own by the time they turn 30, the time's now for Simone to seal the deal, but there are still 4 years to go for 30 and Philippe initially refuses due to the way he sees Simone as a friend but not as a girl, but the actual reason as one would've suspected already comes later in a beautiful hilarious scene with his friend from whom Philippe seeks advice on whether to get her pregnant or not. The plot as such may be thin here, but many moments worked majorly for me in terms of giving insights into these characters, be it Simone having a tattoo of "Free Tibet" on her back and Philippe seeming to get a bit uncomfortable or wary on noticing it for the first time, (contd in comments)

August 32nd on Earth Directed by Denis Villeneuve 1 hr 28 min Streaming on Fandor and IndieFlix Denis Villeneuve makes his directorial debut with a small indie film that feels like a proof of concept. The movie follows an action and consequences story arc between just a few people that allows the director to showcase his ability with a camera and his eye for film. The movie take a voyage from a hit and run to conceiving a baby in the desert. Maybe not the typical breakout storyline, but one that offers a glimpse into all sides of an emotional spectrum. Villeneuve shows his strength to capture something on screen when the on screen action is minimal. He brings out the best of his actors and they feel comfortable with the film. The film is slow but effective. The main burden of the success of the movie falls on the shoulders of the two main characters Simone (Pascale Bussieres) and Philippe (Alexis Martin). The two of them possess a will-they-won’t-they relationship that is the lifeblood of the film, which ultimately lands with their own unique flair. The two of them have the chemistry together to carry the movie and you could just want to be their third wheel looking on. For a debut the bar is right in the middle. Can you produce something that shows you have what it takes to move to the next level, or is this not the best path for you moving forward? August 32nd on Earth 1998 Initial Rating: 6/10 I have a confession to make. 404 days ago, I became a liar. A dirty liar, pants aflame. To be more specific, 404 years ago I watched Polytechnique and began asserting to anyone who would care (few if any people) that I had seen every Denis Villeneuve film. That was incorrect, as evidenced by this movies existence. August 32nd on Earth is about a woman who wants her best friend to get her pregnant. He has some qualms about this due to feelings for her. Not an ideal situation! There are some flashes of greatness in this movie, but ultimately it feels like an overly long short. There's some really well filmed scenes in here, specifically when they are in the salt flats in Utah. Speaking of which, awesome setting for a movie. If you know another movie that spends time there please let me know and I will watch it within 33 business days. I found the plot to be interesting at times, and I actually mostly liked the dynamic between the two characters. What I did not like is the ending, it feels very sudden and unnecessary. There are also a few weird leaps felt unnatural to me. I can't really recommend this unless you're specifically trying to watch all of Denis Villeneuve's movies. This is by no means my least favorite of them, but I can't think of too many reasons to watch it for its own merit. Unless you really want to see a film take place on salt flats. Such a cool location. Makes me want to go there. August 32nd on Earth. Un 32 août sur terre. Denis Villeneuve. 1998. Mubi. Although Villeneuve’s debut feature hints at the science fiction films he’d helm in the twenty-first century it is primarily an odd-ball romantic comedy that divides its time between Montreal and Utah’s Great Salt Lake. I approached it with no foreknowledge and walked away disappointed, but not exceedingly so because it served as a stepping stone to much more ambitious projects. Just two years later he released the Kieslowski inflected Maelstrom to much greater success, so there’s no need to be too tough on August 32nd on Earth. My disinterest in both of the leads undermined my engagement. There are obvious echoes of Jean Seberg and all of the associations she brings, but even at 88 minutes it felt too long. Shots are held for extended periods with no discernable purpose. The carefully considered coincidences which steer the narrative often feel contrived. After less than 24 hours I’ve already forgotten the faces of every peripheral character. Villeneuve succeeds most frequently when given access to the emptiness of the American west. The opportunity to shoot on the salt flats would be understandably exciting for a young director and when seen from that vantage point, it is easier to appreciate the resulting work. It is a festival circuit picture that could be described as “promising” in trade journals. The awareness that he was so easily able to leapfrog beyond this film’s limitations only amplifies my appreciation for what followed. This film is a footnote to an already impressive career, but one I’m glad to have had an opportunity to absorb.
