Happy Eighteenth Birthday my darling boy. You make me so very proud every single day. The obstacles that you’ve overcome to me have seemed insurmountable and you have just casually ambled on making them look easy. Your disposition is absolutely beautiful and so many people comment on it. From this day on you’re your own man, but now I’ll be beside and not in front, just in case. I’m glad you enjoyed your day, liked all your presents and are currently devouring your obligatory Birthday Chocolate Mud Cake. Love you always and forever kiddo. ❤️🎈🎁 #happybirthday #18thbirthday #instabirthday #presents #candles #birthdaycake #legallyanadult #6574daysold #autistickidsrock #autisticteensofinstagram #loveyou 🫶

I have posted reels with clips of what Abby’s verbal communication was like at 1 - 3 years old. She is a gestalt language processor, as many autistic kids are, and her path to language development was so fascinating to watch, and so unlike what every language milestone graphic on the internet or poster in the doctor’s office said it would be like. Gestalt language processors do not follow predictable milestones like how many words they should know by a certain age. They follow what is called the Natural Language Acquisition path to developing language. The stages vary dramatically as far as how old a child is when they reach a certain stage, but are very predictable as far as the order they happen in and what skill will come next. In the video clips of her earlier years she is using a lot of scripts - stage 1 GLPs memorize entire phrases and use them to communicate. They don’t know what each individual word means, just the overall meaning of the sentence. Sometimes the scripts so perfectly fit the situation you’d never know it was a script, and sometimes it takes some detective work to figure out what that sentence means to that child. As they progress through the stages, they figure out how to mix and match parts of scripts or swap out a word in a script to make new meaning. Then they figure out what individual words mean, and then start making their own sentences. They still may use scripts, mitigated or not, but they also have the ability to make up new sentences. The fun part is that sometimes those sentences make no sense. And unlike with a script, there is no original context to go back to. Which makes for some very confusing stories. Abby is 6.5 now and talks *all the time*. But for how much she talks, it’s hard to get it on video because she knows I’m videoing. 😂🤦‍♀️ So here we have some screenshots of Abby quotes in the last week. A hilarious, expressive, slightly confusing mix of original sentences, what sound like mitigated scripts she picked up from yet to be determined sources, and straight scripts (“you’re such a sweet girl” is said to her often lol). Gestalt processors are so much fun!

Radical acceptance means truly embracing your child just the way they are. For parents of Autistic kiddos, it requires challenging ablest thinking and behaviouralist parenting. It means no longer comparing your child’s development to their peers and it means saying no to therapies and school settings that aren’t respectful of your child’s feelings and needs as an Autistic person. So much more to say about radical acceptance. But for now I’ll just share that I was fortunate to discover the concept early on in my parenting and grew so much through that journey. I get the sense from talking to other parents of Autistic kids that many believe radical acceptance requires that they not seek out any intervention of any kind for their child. There’s no clear wrong or right here, but from my own experience, I think there are challenges that many Autistic kiddos face, particularly with sensory processing, digestive complaints, and anxiety/depression that are really hard to live with and can be relieved with the right interventions. Autistic kiddos can enjoy life and feel good in their bodies, and they absolutely should be given the support to if they aren’t. That’s what inspires me to learn everything about the neurodiversity and how to improve regulation in the nervous system. Because everybody deserves to feel their best!

April is Autism Awareness Month and if you have been following for a while you will know that I have spoken about how awareness must only be a brief stopping point on the journey to acceptance, understanding and even celebration. Today’s stories are beautiful windows and mirror books that honor and uplift ND children. ♾️ Next Level: A Hymn in Gratitude for Neurodiversity by Samara Cole Doyon and Kaylani Juanita* This tender and loving letter from a mother to her autistic son is a tribute to his unique way of seeing and experiencing the world and a invitation to the broader world to celebrate and welcome difference. Joyful, exuberant illustrations by the wildly talented Kaylani Juanita capture the wonder and emotional range of the boy and his mother as they go about their day navigating ups and downs. There is so much to love about this picture, but I think perhaps the thing I love best is witnessing the mother’s acceptance and understanding of her son - her ability to both meet and join his happiness and to help him navigate his struggles. ♾️ Flap Your Hands: A Celebration of Stimming by Steve Absell A form of expression and self regulation in neurodivergent children, stimming is a way of using body movements (called stims) to help regulate emotions or overstimulation. In an explosion of color and playfulness, Asbell has crafted a book that not only normalizes stimming but also celebrates it. These rainbow colored illustrations animate the motion of the 4 neurodivergent characters while the text makes for a delightfully fun read aloud. A stunning windows and mirror book, Flap Your Hands is sure to build understanding among all readers and pride amongst neurodivergent readers. With the aid of picture books like Next Level and Flap Your Hands I hope that we are able to work to create a future that welcomes all people (neurodivergent or neurotypical) to show up as their authentic selves and not only be accepted but be celebrated. As we work towards this more inclusive future, I know that so many readers of all ages will see themselves reflected lovingly in these pages and know that they are whole, that they are wonderful, that they belong.

When I tell you TJ did so well at the #UniverSoulCircus last weekend, that is an understatement. This picture captures perfectly how well he did and how much he enjoyed himself. (I will be putting together a video of how well he did) I had/set no expectations. I informed him of what we were going to do ahead of time, showing him pics and videos and periodically informed him until we got there. We had a plan to try and help him through, if he showed signs of having a meltdown, but would leave if he just couldn't handle it. But he only had one moment when we initially got there and another moment when them scary clowns came out. But he made it through beautifully! Although we didn't stay for the entire thing (I didn't know it was a 2.5 hour show), we did stay for about 1.5 hour, until the intermission. I came prepared with all his snacks #safefoods and his #noisecancellingheadphones just in case. Oh and couldn't forget his tablets, but he didn't use his tablets or his headphones. He continues to amaze me every single day! ❤️🩷🧡💛💚💙🩵💜♾️🧩 #Autistic #ProudMama #Autism #Autismlife #BlackAutismAwareness #speechtherapy #communication #AutismAwareness #blackautism #ASD #ADHD #sensory #sensoryprocessingdisorder #additionalneeds #autismacceptance #circus #Atlanta #Gwinnett #AutismAwarenessMonth #AutismAcceptanceMonth #autistickidsrock #ICan #differentnotless #different #soproud #MySonshine #MySun

💊LDN (low-dose naltrexone) is a medication that has shown promise in treating symptoms of autism. Naltrexone is an FDA-approved medication used off-label to treat more than 100 different diseases, and it has been found to have immunomodulatory effects that can help alleviate some of the symptoms of autism. 💡Research suggests that LDN may help reduce inflammation in the brain, which has been linked to autism. Some studies have also shown that LDN may help improve communication and social interaction in individuals with autism. Let's continue to support research and development of new treatments for autism. By staying informed and advocating for those with autism, we can make a positive impact on the lives of individuals and families affected by this disorder. #autismjourney #autismawarenessmonth #autismworld #mentalhealth #AutismMom #AutisticAcceptance #anxiety #autismwarrior #autismlove #AutisticKidsRock #autismmemes #ilovesomeonewithautism #stimming #mentalhealthawareness #lightitupblue #ldnscience #ldn #alternativetreatments

By understanding how common bedwetting is in children with autism, we can help raise awareness and support families dealing with this issue. We believe there are several underlying causes of bedwetting in autistic children, which include; ⭐️ The awareness of bodily cues indicating the need to use the toilet. ⭐️ It’s important to get toileting sorted in the daytime first before tackling the bedwetting at night. Stool withholding, constipation & infrequent drinking (filling and emptying the bladder) during the day are all factors that can impact bedwetting for all children - not just children with Autism. ⭐️ Some children with ASD may have difficulty expressing their need to use the bathroom or understanding instructions related to toileting. ⭐️ Many Autistic children have irregular sleep patterns or insomnia, which can disrupt their ability to wake up to use the bathroom during the night. ⭐️ Changes in routine, transitions, or other stressors can contribute to bedwetting in children with ASD, as they may have difficulty coping with anxiety. ⭐️ Children with ASD may have delays in reaching developmental milestones, including achieving nighttime bladder control. Whilst this can be a challenging time, It's essential to address bedwetting in children with Autism- in fact any child… with patience, understanding, and appropriate support. If you are concerned about your child's bedwetting, it's important to talk to your healthcare provider such as your GP, or Pediatrician. ♥️ Do you have a child with autism that experiences bedwetting? #autismawareness #autismacceptance #autism #autismmom #autismlife #autismsupport #childdevelopment #bedwettingsolution #bedwetting #autismawarenessweek #autismmummy #autismlife💙 #autistickids #autistickidsrock #pottytraining

I'm a father of an "Autistic" child. It's taken some time to accept it and I'm fully not there. I have had my struggles with the clinical term to describe my daughter. When I'm alone in my thoughts, I see an energetic, loving, independent, goofy, beautiful child. I worry about the views of peers her age and judgemental adults. My child is like any other child her age. I'm OVERLY protective of her and HIGHLY defensive. Autistic children jus need extra love and a ton of patience, but don't all kids?? They didn't ask for what they go through, but in time, they grow through it....❤️ #mysweetToriAna #autism #autistickidsrock

April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day and April is Autism Acceptance Month. Sending lots of kindness, compassion, and love to the autism community. ❤️ I wanted to do a post on some ways to promote inclusivity for individuals with autism that I read on the Psychology Today website: 1) SIGNAGE: “Having signs that have both written words and pictures can help those with autism better understand the message the sign is relaying.” 2) PERSONAL SPACE: “Some individuals with autism struggle to understand personal space boundaries. Knowing this can help us to understand that an interaction with an individual with autism is not intended to be offensive, but simply something they may still be learning and working on. We can kindly ask the individual to take a step back or let them know that we are going to take a step back. Communicating this increases respect for the individual.” 3) SOCIAL INTERACTION: “We all communicate and interact differently. Recognizing that some people with autism may not make eye contact or may make brief eye contact can help us to better interact with those with autism.” 4) PATIENCE: “Having patience when engaging with someone with autism can give them the time and space they need to communicate, interact, and access what it is they need. For example, give the individual time to respond after saying something or asking a question. Be mindful of only asking one question at a time, to allow the individual time to process and respond. Be patient and be kind. It can make someone’s day.” #autismacceptancemonth #autismisbeautiful #autismisawesome #autismisreal #autismcommunity #autismkids #autismadults #autismadvocacy #autismisnotatragedy #autismisnotatragedy #autisticadults #autistickidsrock #autismspectrumdisorders #autismchild #autismawarness #autismacceptanceeveryday #autismacceptance💙 #autismmatters #autismbeautiful #autismisasuperpower #autismislove #autisticcommunity #autismrights #autisticspectrum #autisticchild #autisticwomenandgirls #autisticmen #autisticmentalhealth #autismfamilies #autismlove💙

It is Autism Acceptance Month! Some people say, Autism Awareness… But people are aware that there is autism. We need more of the acceptance. This is the first Autism Acceptance Month where I have two kids that have been diagnosed. It has been a roller coaster and sometimes I wonder what more I can do to help them and make sure they have everything they need in life. I recently got a note from Jayden saying “mom, you’re doing a great job.” 🥹 One job I have is to amplify their voices and the voices of other autistic children, teens, and adults. Please listen and take in the words that they say when it comes to autism. #autismacceptance #asd #asdkids #autistic #onthespectrum #autismawareness #autistickidsrock #autistickids #disneyautism #disneykids #blackgirldisney #latinxmagia #justaddatiara

DEADLINE: April 12 For those who don’t know me, my name is Harvey Childs and I am an autistic photographer studying at UWTSD. I am currently developing a photo-book as part of my final submission. The theme is open-ended, so I decided to base it around the experience of an autistic individual. The book will feature hand-written text alongside my own photographic work. Of course, my experience with sensory sensitivity and seeking won’t account for all autistic people, given that it is a “spectrum”. Here’s how YOU can help… I would like you to write about your experience with sensory on plain white paper (written in black ink preferably). This could be about sensory, how you interact with other people, or how you cope (it’s completely up to you). Feel free to go into as much, or as little detail you want, any contribution will be appreciated. Or if you have a sibling, spouse, friend or family member on the Autism Spectrum, their input is also welcome. I am hoping for 20 responses to accompany the volume of imagery, but I am open for more. To submit, photograph your written text, making sure it is clear and within the frame. Then send it to my email ([email protected]). I look forward to your responses… [ see slide 2 + 3 for example ]

I wrote this ahead of April, so we can all get ready to take an action! Alt Text: Autistic adults often get a bad reputation for the way we advocate for change. Our tone is firm and to the point. There is no grey area, it’s either you are in or you are out. Please understand that we are open about our lived experiences because we want a lot of change for Autistic children’s future. To write and speak about autistic living, it’s an exhausting physical & emotional process, and for many, it’s going down traumatic memories. Whether you are an autistic or neurotypical human, a parent/ caregiver, business owner, therapist, educator, or community member, if I ask you what kind of world you want for all of your children - don’t you think the answer would be the same?? A kinder world where people with different neuro types can co-exist & contribute as valuable members of society. For Autism Acceptance Month: If you are an Autistic advocate who can and wants to present to schools, businesses and community organizations, drop your name and topics you would like others to learn about below ⬇️ And yes, you deserve to get compensation. For Autism Acceptance Month: If you are in a position to hire an Autistic person to educate your team, please plan, organize, accommodate, and offer to compensate in your FIRST email. Please don’t make Autistic people second guess their self value. For Autism Acceptance Month, keep in mind you can make a big impact by hiring these folks to present: Autistic non/unreliably/minimally speaker. Autistic BIPOC individuals. Autistic BIPOC multiply divergent people to present to law enforcement professionals. For Autism Acceptance Month: Call a community organization, school, law enforcement or downtown business offices and ask, “April is an important month for Autistic individuals. Would you be interested to learn from an Autistic advocate?” You can call, write to, or sponsor an #Autistic person to present for a group! #autismacceptance #autismawareness #autisticpride #autisticadults #actuallyautistic #autisticcommunity #autismcommunity #autismspectrum #autistickids #autistickidsrock #autismfamilies #autisticpeople #autismsupport

Not all individuals with autism possess savant skills or exceptional talents—this is a myth. Autism is a broad spectrum, and like any community, people with autism exhibit a diverse array of abilities. The fact is, each person with autism has their own set of strengths and challenges, and it’s important to recognize and appreciate this variety. . . #childcare #gobehavioral #earlydetectionmatters #abatherapycenter #myths #autismfamily #autisticpeople #AutisticKidsRock #AutisticParents

It’s more than okay if you felt this way too 💜 When my son was diagnosed as autistic, despite feeling it in my bones and knowing it was coming, there was still a sense of grief. It wasn’t that I was upset about him being autistic. I was saddened by the struggles he might face and the realisation that life might not be as easy for him as I’d hoped. I grieved for the unknown future ahead for my son. I grieved for the parenting experience I thought I would have. A significant part of this grief stemmed from the preconceived ideas of what parenting and existing in the world ‘should’ be or ‘should’ look like. I was mourning the loss of those societal expectations that had been placed on me from day one. But there wasn’t just sadness. There was also complete relief. It was validating – other people could see what me and his dad saw. It wasn’t all in our heads. Yet, within this grief, there's room for growth and hope. My son’s diagnosis gave us answers, so we can focus on getting the right support in place and helping him to thrive. Grieving is a natural response for many parents upon receiving an autism diagnosis. If you experienced this, with or without a formal diagnosis, just know that you are not alone. There is no right or wrong way to feel. Be kind to yourself, and support your child to navigate the choppy waters ahead. [📸 Turquoise background, cut-out image of Amy in the centre.
