April is AUTISM awareness/acceptance month & I think that having the special Olympics happen during this month is a perfect tribute to the AMAZING AUTISM community. Hello! I can't believe over a month has drifted by again! We're still here, still jogging along. I haven't been posting because I'm not really sure what to talk about these days. Our life feels so far outside the "norm" that I often feel I don't really know how to relate to other people any more. Of course many of our friends here are people who's lives are similar to our and probably can relate, maybe I just got too used to being in our little bubble. If that sounded a bit down don't worry, we are really quite happy in our little bubble. Boo has been doing well lately, she is more herself than she has been in a long time and its wonderful to hear her chatting and laughing again, there was a time when we weren't sure we ever would. She has been going to school for a 45 minute art club once a week since February and this week she also attended her actual art lesson too! This is huge news because it's almost a year since she did a lesson in school and it's the first time she has taken part in a lesson at secondary school. She still has many challenges to overcome with lots of areas of daily life (food, sleep, hygiene etc) but compared to a year ago things are improving and she is so much calmer and happier. #autisticburnout #audhd #pdaautism #autisticgirls #autisticgirlsofintagram #autismmama

Thankfully, the weather has been much better this week, which has meant that while I've been getting well at home, Leo has been able to get outside with his Daddy & little brother 🌳🚲👏🏻 Both the boys would spend 24/7 outside, which is great because it does wonders for Leo. 👉 If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years of parenting, it’s that you can’t give from an empty cup. A big part of my motivation to prioritize my physical and mental health is because it most definitely makes me a better parent to my kids. I am able to be the rock they need during the storm because I practice some pretty great self-care. ☺️ 🫶 And if there’s one thing I wish for all parents, ESPECIALLY parents of kiddos with special needs, it would be support and resources for their own wellness. Because we can’t give well from an empty cup. Autistic kiddos tend to be extra sensitive to their caregiver’s stress levels so they really can’t thrive if you’re stressed to the max. 💞 This is actually a piece that we work on in the Autistic Kids Thrive program - creating a realistic self-care plan for parents. Parents need and deserve self-care! 🤗 Alrighty, so here’s my personal self-care routine: 💦I start the day with a few essential oils in a tall glass of water with lemon to hydrate and support detoxification. These are Frankincense and Copaiba for their anti-inflammatory properties and Zendocrine for detox support. 🤓 I take SAMe first thing - makes a big difference for my ADDish symptoms I go for a 30min 🏃‍♀️ while listening to my fav music. This really helps me clear my mind and boosts my mood 💊 I take a B complex that’s suited to my particular MTHFR snaps, plus a probiotic and fish oil. 🥗I eat clean organic home cooked meals (most of the time) 😴And I take magnesium at night, along with a few more essential oils. I don’t drink or smoke at all but I do have a strong love of ☕️ and dark 🍫 I have a therapist I see weekly for support and I also utilize somatic therapies for healing. 🧘‍♀️ In all my relationships, I strive for mutual respect, collaboration and win-wins. My sensory-sensitive kid—the one who doesn’t want to take a bath and who used to hate the feeling of sand—was up to his neck in dirty bay water and then rolled around in the sand this weekend. For an autistic kid, this is big progress. 💕😊 How did we get here? Lots and lots of therapy. Lots of water and sand play. Lots of experiences and trial and error. We’ve learned that what Gordon doesn’t like one day he may love the next day. So we try and try again while avoiding being too pushy or demanding. We give him options and then let him say yes or no. It feels weird to just post selfies of myself, but I’ve been having a lot of feelings lately that I think should be talked about. I talked a little about this on my stories the other night - but before I had E (and when he was still pretty little), I was a huge makeup person. I did all sorts of creative makeup looks, collected limited edition makeup, consumed hours and hours of content about cosmetics. I have loved makeup for a very long time. But I don’t really have the energy, the time, or the money to continue to collect and experiment with makeup like I used to. During the day, I'm E's caregiver. My energy goes to him. If I do my makeup, it's a couple of products and max 10 minutes. After he goes to bed, I'm cleaning or working or just trying to exist as a human by myself. Some days I feel like I'm losing myself. And then something happens and I'm reminded that the makeup-loving woman still exists inside of me and needs to be let out sometimes. So the other night, instead of cleaning or working, I played with makeup for the first time in a long time. I used products I haven’t used in forever and even a lipstick I’ve never used before. And I loved it. Sometimes, who I was before I became a mother feels like someone I’ll never be again. Being a parent or someone's primary carer means someone's needs come before your own, but when your child also has needs, it can become more difficult. I have needed surgery on my ear for a while now, but what I needed for my own health reasons has to be weighed up with Leo's needs and him needing me. My doctor told me last month that I needed to have the operation, but the only way I would accept was if I could have it done and come home the same day. When I explained why, he was ok for this to happen with a list of what I'd need to do for that to be ok. This may not be the best decision overall, but it's the one I would not negotiate with. I had my operation over the weekend, and I'm so glad it's now done, but me having surgery impacts Leo in more ways than one. During our life after Ry's autism diagnosis, I've met many naysayers and people who limited his potential. ⁠ ⁠ Autism is permanent and it's best to just accept it. ⁠ ⁠ That never set right for me for when Ry regressed, his health crashed too. ⁠ ⁠ And when you put pen to paper (I recommend this for every parent, and this is something that the parents we coach are encouraged and empowered to do)... we got better awareness into Ry's story. ⁠ ⁠ This graph is a picture of Ry's weight percentile. ⁠ ⁠ His first year was stellar... 90th percentile for weight and then it crashed. ⁠ ⁠ I know we are told that there's no link between childhood "interventions" and autism and maybe that's true but for Ry his health crashed right around the same time as a doctor visit and a peanut allergy. And when his health crashed and he stopped gaining weight was when he regressed. He started pooping ten times a day and lost his words. ⁠ ⁠ Medicine and supplements went through him undigested and them Spring 2010 we discovered homeopathy. ⁠ ⁠ And the boy who had truly stopped growing gained 10lbs and grew 3 inches in 6 weeks. And when he started to grow again... his progress skyrocketed. ⁠ ⁠ Every parent understanding your unique child's story... pen to paper... and being open to finding what your child needs, can be game-changing. ⁠ ⁠ Be curious to look beyond one diagnosis. ⁠ ⁠ Support your child as they need to be supported. ⁠ ⁠
