I have to say, I am really enjoying this book written by my friend, @hunter57319 👏 The book title is, “Thirty Rites of Passage,” and I think it’s titled perfectly. I love these words from the back cover, pictured above. I am one who also enjoys a much deeper dive into the full picture and history of where I’m standing when I fish a creek or river. Henry David Thoreau, perhaps, penned it best when he wrote, “many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.” Hunter has masterfully woven the meaning of Thoreau’s words into stories about his fishing journeys into some of Americas most unique waters. . I am only partway through this delightful read, but it’s one that should be in your library. I have especially enjoyed reading about some of my Northern Michigan home waters; and I’ve even learned a great deal about them I did not previously know. Thanks Hunter! . The battle with my shoulders (both now) continues but the fight will never stop! Taped up and recovering thanks to some great PT from Doc Chris and staff. After a visit to @thestickdoc and a conversation with coach @dhintzaction, I had to reevaluate my entire way of punching pads and the heavy bag. In sparring im fine but pain can creep up with repeated impact on the heavy bag and pads when I punch for distance. Ive been “punching out of the socket” to gain range and its been messing the shoulders up. Now I need to rework my form on the bag. Even with 21 years experience Im still a student and remastering the basics. Always be humble and admit you dont have everything figured out. Theres always new things to learn from different perspectives! Sorry for being the worst client and only coming sporadically gents. Our need to have asanas look “right” is like focusing on keeping the hammer shiny instead of getting the nail in the wall. The intention of the hammer is completely missed….and possibly the nail too😂. The constant need to get things right results in bypassing our innate wisdom in exchange for an intensified focus on external appearance….which is the opposite of yoga. Our yoga practice should awaken autonomy and inner connection. It should connect us more to our unique gifts and purpose instead of homogenize us to look and be like everyone else. This takes time. It is often easier to mimic people than it is to accept the awkward stage of exploration and figuring things out. Embrace it. That is the true path of yoga. Thoughts on competing from my perspective as a lifter, competitor and ref. I’ve been fortunate enough to have been involved in this sport for roughly a decade -learning, competing and officiating , with a couple of decades prior to that spent competing in other sports. Sharing some personal perspective and experiences: 1. Get a QUALIFIED coach if you want to compete - I can’t stress this enough - someone you can trust who has been successful on and off the platform and has experience in the sport of powerlifting 2. Do your homework- film your lifts, fix technical errors, educate yourself. Also, study your sport, not just the impressive posts on social media, but the individuals and feds that made it what it is today 3. Read the rule book! 4. Perform according to the rules and the tone of the day - if you see tight judging that day , adjust to it - lighten openers if needed 5. Pick numbers that are within your ability - if the lift is completely out of reach at the gym, be realistic on a day of max effort in all three lifts 6. We as referees actually like to see you succeed, not take lifts away. Generosity on our part does a lifter no good in his / her next meet 7. Help fellow competitors in the warm up room if you can- comaraderie is huge in this sport 8. Be professional- as an athlete and coach, we all will see each other on another day outside of the event 9. Keep a sense of humor and be open to learning from mistakes- they can be your best teacher A. Learn depth B. Learn pauses C. The student teacher. A little know fact is that I started the idea and developing RAS Group and what I wanted it to be 2 years before we even launched the first Instagram page. It took me about the same amount of time to get all the ducks in a row and offer our first courses to the public. Why? I felt they despite having something to offer, I was concerned I wasn’t good enough. That I wasn’t adequate enough, and that my baseline ability wasn’t there. I decided to launch anyway, and I’m glad I did. I’ve come to understand that no one is ever good enough. Atleast that should be their mentality and fuel for progression. They should be as relentless as they would hope for their students to be, if not more. You’re assuming the role of passing on potentially life saving information. You should never be complacent. In the last few years I’ve met alot of instructors. All sorts of styles and methodologies and ways of teaching. None of that matters. What does matter is if any of those instructors are regularly standing on a firing line as a student to be better. If nothing else it humbles you down to understand the perspective one of your students may have coming to your event. How could you expect someone to pay you money to learn if you wouldn’t do the same? Seems lame. Next time you hear the classic., “Be a student first.” Fact check them. Ask what the last training event or class they took was. I bet you’ll be surprised. I’ve been really in my head about this concept of what it means to be a student. Turns out we don’t know everything about everything. I think we’re all more relatable when coming from a place of curiosity or lack of understanding on things. It’s vulnerable to not know everything (and to own our ignorance, confusion, or lack of knowledge) rather than let our egos drive this bus we call life. I want to be around more students. I want to be more of a student myself! “Sometimes you need to let go to make room for something new.” It’s kind of serendipitous, that this concept has been something I’ve felt in my bones lately and @sandra_nova_yoga shared it succinctly in a Surrender class. Today, I let go of my carefully planned schedule and my name tag, became a student, and really let go. I’m admittedly not great at emptying my brain so I focused on the positives in this moment in my life—my family, some uplifting comments that have made my week, and some positive shifts that have left me feeling uplifted and hopeful. Here’s my advice 🤗 1️⃣ Meet people! Your job will involve talking to people on the daily.. time to come out of your shell. 2️⃣ Ask questions. You won’t know much at the start, which is the whole point of learning and studying. Be ok with asking questions. 3️⃣ Finding a job can be tough. Get out there and get experience in any way you can. 4️⃣ Keep it simple. Being able to explain things in a simple way keeps your clients engaged, complicating things doesn’t make you appear smarter. 5️⃣ Work with all kinds of people. You won’t have a niche at the start. The best experience comes from meeting all kind of people with different goals. 6️⃣ Prioritise yourself. As you get busy it can be common to let your training and nutrition slide. Don’t do that. Bread by example. 7️⃣ Always be a student. The learning never ends. Stay humble and always seek to view the world from a different lens.
