Appetite During Winter Season Colder weather leads to drop in body temperature, hence feel more hungry . This is because food digestion creates heat generation in our body. Body in winter works harder and spends more energy to keep us warm. So your desire to eat comes from bodys natural increase in energy use. We can of course do that with extra layer of clothing or exercise. Hot food , Hot beverages are preferred for the same reason. Cravings are mostly of carbs or sweets. Snacks, Extra portions of food, Sweets , bakery etc. This is help us to maintain our energy balance without getting in weight gain. How to manage appetite: 1. Avoid in between snacking .Eat seasonal fruits and salads as winter season is loaded with red and yellow fruits and vegetables which will suffice vitamin b-12 also. 2. Preference should be mostly protein. Fibre and healthy fats like handful of nuts - almond,groundnut, Mind the quantity . 3. Cravings should be controlled with balancing meals Like minimum of carbohydrates add any protein source like paneer or egg or soybean and maximum of seasonal vegetables. 4. Some foods suggested for snacking - a. Eggs / Non – veg / Lentels /Sprouts with every meal. b. Cook in adequate fat as per the dish requirement . Add ghee on top of rice / chapathi . If lipid profile is in range , seek Dietitian expert advice for the same. c. Ghee with jaggery, small bite of seasonal sweets like gajar halwa post meal and than a glass of water will give adequate satiety. Important to discuss with professional. d. Seasonal spices like Ginger. Cinnamon , Cloves , Mustard, Pepper.
