Meine „Urlaubs-Nachttischschublade“ - alles griffbereit 😎 Insulin kommt bei mir unterwegs und im Hotel NICHT in den Kühlschrank ❗️ ⚠️ unterwegs kann ich die Temperatur von Kühlschränken nicht verlässlich kontrollieren. Zu kalt gelagertes Insulin (unter 2 Grad) kann unbrauchbar werden. Wärme kann Insulin besser vertragen als die meisten annehmen. MEINE persönliche Erfahrung: Mir ist wegen Wärme in 24 Jahren noch kein Insulin „kaputt gegangen“….. auch nicht während einer Sahara-Tour. Natürlich lege ich kein Insulin direkt in die pralle Sonne - sondern packe es z.b unterwegs mittig in die Tasche oder Koffer. Wie handhabt ihr eure Insulinaufbewahrung unterwegs oder am Urlaubsort? While you may not be thinking much about your blood sugar if you don't have diabetes, let me assure you that managing your blood sugar will make a huge difference in how you feel and in your overall health. Keeping your blood sugar balanced is important for hormone health (adrenals, thyroid and more), inflammation, weight loss, energy, fertility, gut health, and much more! I never understood why I was ready for lunch a couple hours after breakfast, or why my energy always tanked certain times of the day, or why I struggled with cravings so much later in the day. Follow @nutrition.tips.well for daily nutrition and calories tips A carbohydrate by basic definition is; ‘a biomolecule consisting of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.’ Though, rather unfortunately over the last 30 years or so carbohydrates have been met with revulsion, fear and persecution. Mainly by those who erroneously sympathize with the notion consumption of carbs will impact body fat more so than any other macronutrient source. ⁣ ⁣ The immediate problem with such a dubious claim is the mirky differentiation of carbohydrates as an entity within edible food. Pizza, pasta, chips, bread and pastry all fall inside the umbrella of “Don’t eat it because its got carbs and you’ll get fat.” Yet if we examine the exact ingredients in such food we can immediately assert that carbohydrates are not the only caloric variable present. ⁣ ⁣ Because the examples displayed on the right of this graphic represent foods containing calories from carbs, protein and more pertinently, fat which houses caloric density. ⁣ ⁣ Put simply, fat contains 9 calories per gram, compared to 4 calories per gram within protein and carbs respectively. Therefore, the presence of protein and fat (via additional ingredients) within food will increase its overall caloric worth. Calorie balance (of any macronutrient ratio) determines body composition. Not carbs. ⁣ ⁣ The futility of the ‘carbs make you fat’ argument is compelled by the fact that fruit and vegetables are mostly made up of carbohydrates. Therefore by persecuting carbs in such generic terms, one would be inadvertently claiming that ‘broccoli makes you fat’. ⁣ ⁣ Reducing body fat has and always will be about creating a negative energy balance, irrespective of carbohydrate consumption. Cutting out carbs may create a calorie deficit, but the same applies if fat and protein are removed. And given that most foods contain all three macronutrients, it’s a much more logical and realistic idea to address overall caloric worth of food. Although this is quite funny it’s also highlighting a much bigger issue. I’m stating the obvious but our Prime Minister/ Government are so out of touch with the needs of their country. I’ve read some horrendous things about Good Old Rishi’s plan to get the “lazy” back to work. Disability and chronic illnesses are not a choice, people do not choose to become unwell and never get better, but sadly this is their reality. I’m fortunate that due to multiple amazing medications and treatments I am in a position where I am able at this time to hold down a job. There have however been times in the not too distant past where having to give up my job looked like it could be a reality, and I was absolutely devastated and terrified at the thought of it. My heart goes out to all of those people who absolutely need and deserve to receive the benefits that they do, and who are now living in fear and uncertainty. Many years ago in 2013, I had just started medical school and I was back home in NYC for the weekend. My buddies and I were wandering around Brooklyn, as we do. While we strolled along the artsy, industrial neighborhood , I was admiring the unique street art that was plastered along the brick walls, and then there it was: a massive glucometer wheatpasted against a giant wall. A few steps farther- and there were huge colorful insulin vials! Seeing street art incorporating diabetes was so novel to me and resonated on such a deep level as I have a passion for street art and obviously identify with diabetes- to see these together in this was left me in awe. A couple years later, I discovered that the artist was in fact a fellow type 1 diabetic, appletonpictures shortly there after he was having an art show at a gallery in NYC. Naturally, I needed to go. As i stood staring at the framed images of artfully comprised collage, painting, and photography, I made a promise to myself: when I finally make it to full attending Endocrinologist, I would buy one of these prints for my office. Well, nine long years later, and during national diabetes awareness month no less, I reached out to my friend appletonpictures and purchased my first ever real piece of art. Not only did he create a beautiful piece for me, but he hand delivered it to the office. It seems like a small gesture to hang art on your wall, but what is wrapped up in this moment for me is a culmination of years of hard work, my passion for artistic expression, diabetes awareness, and will serve as a constant reminder of that fulfilled promise I made to that stressed out med student strolling around Brooklyn so many years ago.
