I was filled with unease and trepidation while contemplating how to craft a foreword for my first book. As I thought about it, I realized much of my discomfort was due to the nerves I encountered when thinking about asking my advisor from my doctoral studies, Dr. Heather Servaty-Seib, to be a part of it. I worried that the book wouldn't be compelling enough, or was too flawed for Dr. S.S. (as I called her) to be willing to attach her name to such a work. Thus, you can imagine the disbelief and relief after she read the first draft and agreed to be part of it. One of the best parts about this book is that I was able to take significant personal risks and by doing so, I got to collaborate with many people I hold in very high regard. The risk was high, but the reward has been bigger. Unless you’re a gardener, you might not understand: March is the month of anticipation, followed by days of disclaimers. But eventually one morning you catch the first green activity – more a reward than a miracle. It is tight and tiny, that patch of ‘Asplenium trichomanes,’ a fern that grows on short rhizomes, with a name longer than its fronds. Seeing the earnest little bit of emerald energy has me wondering, “What else did I upset in late November at that marginal time of year for rooftop planting?” Until yesterday I had completely forgotten about the little fern. Do squirrels have this problem, remembering where they buried the goods? Or do they just go on instinct, knowing you need to plant for tomorrow? It was the end of 2017, almost too late to still be shoving things into the soil, especially if you’re growing in containers. No matter how large they might be, none will offer the same insulation as when you descend into the belly of the earth. But all of the Local Law work and the cacophony of hardhat crews with their daylight blocking scaffolds had just been removed from my little garden, fifteen stories above New York City sidewalks of cement. More than ever I wanted to be out there mucking around when I transplanted that small and sprightly tuft of green. Besides they say that ‘Asplenium trichomanes’ is valued for hardiness down to minus four. With the ability to colonize stonewalls and gritty spaces it sounded suited to the alpine conditions of an unforgiving rooftop garden. The botanical name along with the grower’s initials were written in pencil on the plastic label. It was comforting to have that information. Provenance goes a long way, in and out of the garden. The toy chimp in the second image hugging the leg of my main working desk has been a staple of my various offices for too long to admit. I would like to use International Women’s Day to celebrate a pioneering scientist whom— I am honoured to announce here—has penned the foreword for my latest book THE ARCTIC: A Darker Shade of White (Rizzoli 2024). Jane is a primatologist, ethologist (the science of animal behavior) and conservationist best known for her groundbreaking research on social and familial behaviors of chimpanzees. She started her work in Tanzania in the 1960’s and challenged conventions by demonstrating the emotional and intellectual complexities of chimpanzees, revealing striking parallels with humans. J. D. Cunningham, A History of the Sikhs John Murray, London, 1853 Joseph Davey Cunningham was, as the title page has it, 'late Captain of Engineers in the British Indian Army', and died in 1851, after which a second edition was prepared under the auspices of his brother Peter, who contributes a foreword. A handwritten note at the end of this foreword, perhaps by the E. Hardy whose ownership inscription is on the title page (in the same black ink), gives a short biographical note of Peter and of the four Cunningham brothers. Born in Pimlico in 1816, second son of Allan Cunningham, the poet and assistant of Chantrey the sculptor, by whose aid and interest appointments were obtained for the other three sons in the E. I. Company's service. The eldest, who died in December 1893, as General Sir Alexander Cunningham, in the Royal Engineers, became head of the Archaeological Survey.
