At one of my races, I fistbumped a guy wearing an arm cast with a sling around his shoulder. I’ve seen people hobbling on crutches with a knee brace coming into the gym and doing the damn thing. Dealing with an injury sucks but it doesn’t mean you have to be a couch potato and wait until it gets better. Fractured a toe and can’t walk? Load the shit out of the other side. Add some leg extensions in there too. Oh, and some side planks to get your hips working. 6 month post fracture check-in. Totally unplanned, but my 75-day challenge ended the day of my final fracture clinic appointment. Once cleared to take off the boot in Jan, I thought this challenge would be a great way to get back on my feet. Chose to restart in Feb after a bad cold set me back. Pretty happy to have checked off all my daily goals for 66 of the 75 days. Reading and water intake were the easiest. Sleep, the most difficult. A natural night owl, it took a lot of mindfulness to be in bed on time. My diet was staying close to maintenance while getting 100g of protein. Weight loss wasn't my main focus, but no complaints losing a bit of the floof I gained while being a non-weightbearing couch potato. I'm extremely happy to have progressed my initial step goal of 4000 to 7000 to...I haven't made it Garmin official, but I've been aiming successfully for 10000 the last 3 weeks. From the first x-rays (on the left) to the most recent ones (on the right), it's come a long way in 6 months, but there's more healing to do. Current daily limit walking is 1.5hrs, up to 30min of which I can switch to a speedwalk/slog every other day or so. Longer than that, and the throbbing is real. Forget lunges, my foot screamed at me for close to a week after my last attempt in April. Running is still a ways away, unfortunately. Harry had his review on Friday back in the hospital. It was such a long day which started off absolutely fine then took a sharp turn leaving both Harry and I traumatised. The good news is his hip is moving well and his bloods came back clear so there’s no infection which is great. The consultant was so good with him and spoke directly to Harry which I liked. Harry has been consistently able to show where he is feeling pain and it’s always been in the same spot so the consultant asked for another Xray. Again, Harry wasn’t fazed in the slightest. Unfortunately, once radiology looked at both X-rays from last week and this week, they identified a fracture in his cartilage in his foot which is most likely where the pain has been coming from. Great to have answers but a wee shame I hadn’t realised so have been putting shoes on his foot without extra care. Poor wee scone! The bad turn unfortunately came when Harry was to get bloods done. I asked nurses if someone would be coming to put cream on his hands and they said they didn’t use that in this particular department, they used the spray instead as it sped things up. I was absolutely fine with this as Harry had been absolutely fine the week prior with getting bloods and having a cannula. What I didn’t expect was to be taken to the room where two nurses quickly and without explanation, held Harry down, with one holding his arm still and without any numbing stuck a needle in his arm. Harry was absolutely screaming. To make things worse, this vein didn’t work so they then proceeded to take it out his hand instead, again without numbing and by holding him down. To say he was traumatised is an understatement. I have never heard Harry cry like that and it broke my heart to hear him scream “mummy I don’t like it, stop”. With my PTSD, I stay back during bloods to avoid letting Harry feel my fear (my mum was with him), but given the state he was in I went over and stroked his face trying to tell him it was ok. In doing this, I saw the blood going through the needle cannula which coupled with the state Harry was in made me visibly upset - something I’ve worked so hard for my son to never see. Here’s my foot injury! My horse accidentally stood on it on the 20th of December!! It turned out I had multiple fractures and a lis franc fracture. I had a plate put in on the 4th of January. I wasn’t allowed to weight bare at all, then I was only allowed to put weight through my heel for weeks. I’ve been just sat for months so I’ve now been re-learning how to walk and use my foot again. The bike has been a god send!! I started riding on Mum’s e-bike first which helped so much. I’ve now ridden my CX bike for one whole week! Fracture Update: I can now start to wear a normal shoe. Kicking my toe pushed me back 4 weeks, but I'm so glad I don't have to wear that damn fracture shoe. I seen my xrays and I can see where the fracture is and how well it's healing. I still can not believe I did this to myself. 34 and the first time I've fractured a bone. Rehab day 11/42. Foot coming along nicely. Swelling is nearly all gone and starting to get more range of motion back in the ankle joint. Still have to be careful of loading weight in it as I still got pain in the area where the fracture is. Another long pool session to try to hold some sort of fitness. Getting more comfortable with the swims now but still looking forward to being able to run again in about 4 weeks hopefully. “You May See Me Struggle but You Will Never See Me Quit” USA Championships - Las Vegas, Stratosphère Tower 5th Overall 108 Flrs, 1391 Steps - 1149’ Vertical feet. After months of HARD Training for the USA Championships, this happens… 3 weeks ago I dropped my MacBook on my bare foot fracturing the 3rd & 4th metatarsal bones, making it impossible to do any high intensity training which was necessary to maintain my high level of fitness. 😞 The week prior I worked the Olympic Trials so I didn't get a chance to do the necessary stair training as well. So after a month of barely training, my fitness level greatly declined. I thought about not doing the race, and then I asked myself, “what would Goggins do?” "We Always have 40% More in Us" - Goggins The air was super dry (desert) with an altitude of 2000', making it very difficult to breathe, racing at my max HR for the duration. The pain in my foot got increasingly worse the higher I climbed. I wanted to quit but...I didn't. I embraced the suck. I never look at the floors but I did this time and I was like "What the HELL?? I'm only at flr 36?? I told myself there was no way I could endure this pain for another 72 flrs... But I did. Somehow before I knew it, I reached the Pod which became a normal stairwell. All I wanted to do was finish, to NOT QUIT, to get off my f*ckin foot. (if Goggins can run 100 miles with stress fractures and broken feet, well...) When I finally reached the finish line, I wasn't exactly sure where the finish line was since there was no timing mat, so I just kept running till I collapsed. I wanted to quit but… Today was Not the Day. Was I happy with my race? No, but I did the best I could with a fractured foot. I gave 200%. I had nothing left....literally. Yup, this is exactly what it looks like. Me, in the ER waiting for the results of my x-ray. Why am I having x-rays you ask? Well, I tripped and rolled my ankle. It’s ironic really. Of the thousands of miles that I’ve run and all the ultras that I’ve competed in… Not to mention the countless times that I’ve rolled my ankles while running… Never once have I sustained an injury. So who would have thought that I would hurt myself walking out my back door to go to work. Definitely not me. Preliminary results are that I fractured my foot, but they want to do another set of images next week to confirm. Annoying AF because in the meantime, I’m stuck in this makeshift splint and not allowed to put weight on it. If you need me, I’ll just be over here trying not to go crazy! Not the most fun I’ve had being on crutches with my fractured foot, but it could be a lot worse. I thought I’d be laid up and put on weight eating and not moving but actually I had a self tape to do on Thursday and another on Friday which meant getting off my backside. Everything took a lot longer to set up and prepare as I shuffled around on my knees on my (gardening) knee pads because it was quicker and I got up and down stairs faster that way. Our boys @jakeclarke03 @creatorclarke and @lukaclarke08 were at the top of the stairs for one of my knee shuffle climbs up them and they found it very amusing. They said I made it look like a zombie apocalypse scene crawling towards them. Well, the actress in me found it amusing too and of course played to the gallery. 🤪😆It was hard work doing that and getting around on crutches but at least I felt I was getting a good workout somehow using different muscles than I might ordinarily use. (And the scenes thankfully required me to record sitting down at a computer on zoom for one and simulating sitting in a carriage and on a plane for the other.) My gym membership is suspended so I’m saving money. And the enforced rest to put my foot up is making me concentrate my time and focus more on the important things, letting go of the rest. 🙌🙏 Win win right? When it rains it pours 😩 Jade was running around the kitten room, and jumped on top of a kennel that was in that room for slowly introducing new kittens. Somehow, the blanket that I placed on top securely was pulled off and she got her foot caught in the bars on the top. I walked into the room just in time to catch her falling backwards with her foot caught in the bar. Originally, I thought it was just a strain so I kept an eye on it and our vet gave us an anti-inflammatory and pain meds to help her recover. Today, the inflammation was finally down, and I could see that her foot was crooked and she was still limping. After receiving x-rays, it was clear that she had three fractured toes. She’s currently at our vets office receiving treatment and will have to go under anesthesia to have one of them put back into place.
