The Last Garden in England: A Book Review “I’m going to get ‘Gardens aren’t just about flowers’ tattooed on my forehead one of these days.” -Emma Lovett This quote hit me the most as I read this unique, witty and enchanting historical fiction written by Julia Kelly. Gardens are something more than just flowers. Whether you are a gardener, landscaper, or just an admirer; there is something about nature that draws you in. I know as an amateur photographer who takes various nature photos and following most of you here who take nature photos, you know what I mean. This book follows the story of three women in 1907, 1944 and the 21st Century. Julia Kelly manages to connect the Winter Garden to Venetia Smith, Beth Pedley and Emma Lovett seamlessly. You will find how this garden connects them and other women and characters in three different timelines. Prepare to immerse yourself and get lost in your garden. In this blog post, I have also included information where to buy Julia Kelly's books, and about the Edwardian Era and Land Girls. *There is an affiliate link in my blog post.* Follow @juliakellywrites for more great historical novels! During the pandemic I suddenly wanted to quit my studies. Being completely isolated led to my own self questioning. No one needed historians, we needed doctors, psychologists, therapists, nurses. And I felt unvalid in myself. Only travelling finally made me realise my heart was missing something, my soul didn't feel complete. And I only felt in peace with myself again when I admitted I wanted to return to my studies as a historian. So, historians are needed. Writers are needed. Singers, dancers, actors, artists are needed, all these jobs which were told to be less important throughout the last years are important and don't need any justification. There are no "unreal" or "less important jobs" everyone matters in this System of society. #historian #historiansofinstagram #historicalpalace #history #historystudent #historicalblog #historyblog #travelling #travel #traveller #rouen #Paris #london #mentalhealth #pandemic #mentalhealthmatters #historyblogger

__________ 🇬🇧Ladies and gentlemen! Here's some cringe from the 1820s, as if someone thought that once only great art was created and everyone had sophisticated taste. Meanwhile, there were also bears pissing on the riflemen and other things that we will probably never find out about and ... it's a pity because curiosity eats me up what other "silly things" the bear did XD 🐻 "Two Shooters and a Milkmaid" is a comic opera in one act with music by Egidio Romualdo Duni and libretto by Louis Ansaume, first performed in 1763. 📚 cytat/quote: K. Today's post is the second in my series on medieval child saints, and is about 'Little St Hugh' of Lincoln, an eight-year old boy who was murdered in 1255. On the 31st of July 1255, Hugh had been playing in town with a group of his friends. Nothing seemed amiss until it began to grow darker, and Hugh had not returned home. Hugh's mother, a lady named Beatrice, flew into an anxious frenzy. She searched all across the city for days on end, yet little Hugh was nowhere to be seen. Eventually, almost a month later, Beatrice visited the house of a local villager, and happened upon his well. There, at the very bottom, was the corpse of her son. Almost immediately, stories of miracles began popping up across Lincoln. It was said that if you bathed in, or drank the well water in which Hugh was found, it would cure you of blindness and other maladies (and, I imagine, would make you very unwell!). The Church became very interested in the story of little Hugh, and he was buried in a grand ceremony at the magnificent Lincoln Cathedral, where a shrine was erected for pilgrims to pay homage to the boy. In 1790, Hugh's tiny 3ft grave was opened, and his skeleton was revealed in perfect condition. By this time, stories of his miracles had entirely died down. You can still visit the grave of Little St Hugh at Lincoln Cathedral, though it is quite easy to miss since it was stripped in the reign of Henry VIII. Lincoln Cathedral is actually home to two Saint Hughs, the older of the two having a grand shrine toward the East end of the building!

The tragic story of Lady Jane Grey has been told numerous of times but that of her sisters hasn't. This is a brief summary of the other ill-fated Grey sisters, Katherine and Mary Grey. — Katherine Grey and Edward Seymour fell in love and hoped to marry. Because of Edward's and Katherine's royal blood it was almost unthinkable that Elizabeth I would allow this couple to wed. They eventually married in secret but once Katherine had become pregnant, she knew it was only a matter of time until the queen would find out. Thus she confided Bess of Hardwick who rushed to Elizabeth and told her of Katherine's secret. The queen was angered and the couple was thrown into the tower. Katherine gave birth to a son who was separated from his mother and their marriage was annulled. The annulment didn't stop the couple to secretly see each other and Katherine gave birth to a second son. Once the queen found out that they had been able to see each other, she decided that Katherine was to be kept under house arrest. They never saw each other again and Katherine died in 1568 aged 27. — Mary Grey also married secretly for love and became the wife of the widowed Thomas Keyes. Unfortunately, their marriage was soon discovered by Elizabeth who was furious that Mary had become the wife of a commoner and without the queen's permission. Perhaps learning from Katherine's and Edward's eager attempts to meet each other, only Thomas Keyes was thrown into the Tower and Mary was to remain under house arrest. Keyes's health declined and he eventually succumbed to his illnesses. Mary begged the queen to look after Keyes's children but her request was denied. Mary hadn't seen Keyes since his imprisonment and she died at the age of 33. #katherinegrey #ladyfrancesbrandon #toweroflondon #elizabethi #maryi #marygrey #ladyjanegrey #historicalbookstagram #aspiringhistorian #thetudors #goodqueenbess #elizabethtudor #marytudor #tudormonarch #historicalblog #bloggersofinstagram #edwardseymour #seymourfamily

⚔️Rytuał mógł trwać nawet kilka dni, łączył sfery sacrum i profanum i miał charakter czysto liturgiczny. ⚔️więcej historii znajdziesz na www.hrabiatytus.pl Ilustracja pochodzi z British Library, Harley 4979 #history #historytoday #historia #historygram #rycestwo #rycerz #pasowanie #średniowiecze #medieval #medievaltimes # #medievalart #medievalhistory #medievalcastle #historynerd #historygeek #europeanhistory #historymood #historyvibes #historycznie #historical #historicalblog #duel #knight #średniowiecznie #historyinpic #historyinpicture

A question I get asked often is how often and when I use machines to create my garments…especially if I am creating an item from a time period when there were definitely no sewing machines. This really depends on how the item is meant for and its purpose. Often for clients who need a gown with strength and within a certain budget, I will do the basic construction with a machine and then visible stitches by hand. If the item is meant for a museum or for my personal use, I will do as much by hand as possible. Especially stitching cartridge pleats…I LOVE hand stitching cartridge pleats! #historicalseamstress #aimeevictorian #aimeevictorianarmoire #sewingpatterns #historicalsewing #historicalfashion #19thcenturyfashion #19thcentury #livinghistorian #historicalblog #livinghistory #regencygown #victorianfashion #historicalfahsion #1810sfashion #regencyfashion #workinggowns #womeninbusiness

❤️ Concubines and Mistresses ❤️ This may not come as much of a surprise, but concubines and mistresses were very common in the Middle Ages, even in the Western World. Concubinage is typically associated with the East, but did you know that there were laws in Medieval Europe that allowed a man to take mistresses, and that sometimes men were almost expected to take lovers? - - I recently wrote an essay about virginity and marriage in the Middle Ages, and one thing that really shocked me was that in Medieval Wales, a concubine had pretty much the exact same rights as her lover’s wife. She could legally live with the married couple, was treated respectfully, and the children that she had from her relationship with her lover would have been treated as legitimate heirs. Of course, mistresses were (often) not prostitutes - different laws applied to them - but for the most part, concubines could happily live alongside her lover’s wife, and their children could be raised together as half-siblings, all under one roof. - - Now, you may think this would have caused a lot of legitimacy headaches in Medieval Wales, but surprisingly it (usually) didn’t. In the 1100s, King Llewelyn ap Iorweth the Great of Wales fathered numerous children with numerous lovers. His two eldest sons - Gruffudd and Dafydd - had different mothers, and his five daughters did too. But surprisingly (one of my favourite things about Welsh Medieval law), children in Medieval Wales were all treated the same - even females. Although a son was expected to inherit the crown or the main title, daughters would inherit money, estates and lesser titles should their fathers allow it. Welsh laws towards daughters were generally very good, considering how women were generally treated throughout the medieval world. So despite the fact that Llewelyn had at least 3 known mistresses who mothered his children (and a wife), they were all treated equally and went on to lead good lives, made advantageous marriages and were all influential figures - even his daughters.

~ Medieval Toilets ~ In the Middle Ages, toilets - also known as close-stools, garderobes or privies - were a lot cleaner than you may think. For the rich, privies were private, lockable rooms that adjoined living spaces, and usually consisted of a wooden plank above a chute or bucket that collected the waste. Even the poor had privies, although they were often public and shared by numerous families. In fact, communal outdoor toilets were still in use in the western world as recently as the 1940s. I think we should count ourselves very lucky! - - In the very early Middle Ages, waste was disposed of in the streets. You’d have to pray you didn’t step in anything...or worse, get it dropped on your head! 🤢 However, by the mid-to-late Middle Ages, waste was removed by sophisticated sewage systems popularised by the Romans. In medieval England, waste was collected by farmers for use as fertiliser. It was also used in the “fulling industry”, where clothes would be bleached with urine! - - One of my favourite medieval anecdotes comes from Westminster in 1347. A poor man named Richard Raker was going about his business in his home when suddenly the floorboards beneath him collapsed - poor Richard was found by his neighbours struggling to get out of the drainage system that lay beneath his home, and which carried away the waste of the whole village. Imagine being remembered in the history books centuries after you had died...all because you fell into something stinky! 🤢 - - You can still see medieval toilets in many castles today. These stone seats must have been chilly - they sat above an open hole that would carry waste out into the fields, moats, or cesspits below to be collected by farmers. By the Tudor times however, toilets had greatly improved - King Henry VIII had a velvet, cushioned commode that would travel with him wherever he went. He even had a personal toilet assistant - called the ‘Groom of the Stool’, who would help Henry in his...um, matters. This job role - as yucky as it sounds - was actually highly prized for it’s close relationship with the monarch...still, I’m not sure I’d want to do it!

The Sāqi • The Cup-Bearer • ساقی Growing up, I had always watched my parents and family discuss and share poetry, music, and art while drinking chai together. Ever since I started learning to read and write Urdu I have become obsessed with Urdu shā’iri. This couplet written by the famous poet and philosopher Allama Iqbal is from his compilation, Bāng-e-Darā (1924). Nasha pilā ke girānā to sab ko ātā hai Mazā to tab hai ki girtoñ ko thām le sāqī “Everyone knows how to throw down people with intoxicants The fun is to convert the intoxicated one to sanity, O cup-bearer” Translated by: M.A.K. Khalil from The Call of the Marching Bell To me, this poem speaks to the human experience of vulnerability. The first line describes how easy it is to put others down, especially when they are in a precarious frame of mind, as is the case with intoxication. The second line invokes the image of the Sāqi or cup-bearer whose duty it was historically to pour drinks for guests at the royal table. In this couplet, Iqbal is entreating all of us to empower and support those who are vulnerable so that we can find joy in lifting people up. What are your thoughts on this couplet? Firstly, SORRY for the terrible audio quality. But I feel like I have to post this for three reasons: 1. To show how much I have improved (By getting a decent mic)... 2. The video editting software I used has driven me crazy and I decided to go ahead and publish this regardless. 3. This is a site where you can see Yu the Great dredged The Yellow River to show the floods - so it seemed a waste to not use this content. The context of this story is that I took a sleeper train from Beijing to Lingfen in Shaanxi province, and I thought, 'what a great idea! I will sleep all night and wake up in the town ready to start my day then go and see The Yellow River!' Unfortunately that was not the case... Instead what I got was a driver who must have been smoking crack or very paranoid, because every time the train stopped, it didn't go to a gradual hault, nahhhh - this guy would slam on the brakes as if there was a blockade ahead of the road! The result was a very tired me (hence the glasses). I thought I was close to the river, but alas, I never give China credit for being such a huge place, the river was a three hour bus trip away. Apart from the dreadful sleeper train experience, the rest of the trip was really good! I got to see The Yellow River and it was full of history! The things we do to see new sites of historical significance... And to top it off, I didn't get a sleeper train back, I got the high speed train which got me back to Beijing within 5 hours. Much better than an overnight train! #vlog #vlogger #vloggerlife #historicalblog #youtube #youtuber #youtubecommunity #community #history #historygeek #historyofchina #chinesehistory #yellowriver #china🇨🇳 #china #黄河 #中国 #中国历史 #verytired #exhausted #video #videos #gopro #shaanxi #yuthegreat

The Market Cross, Castle Combe, Wiltshire. Probably one of the most photographed market cross in England. Castle Combe is said to be the prettiest village in England and has been a set for major films and is a true honeypot destination for tourists wanting to see a quintessential Cotswold village. . The cross was built in the 14th Century when the village began to hold a weekly market for the sale of cloth of which was famous. The village saw its heyday in the tenure of Millicent Le Scrope and then Sir John Fastolf. Fastolf who is now famous for being the fat and drunken buffoon known as Falstaff portrayed in Shakespeares Henry V provided alot of the scarlet cloth for Henry V's soldiers livery in the Agincourt Campaign of 1415 and fought himself throughout that stage of the Hundred Years War at the siegr and defence of Harfleur and at Orleans. Unlike his fictional portrayal Fastolf was a very competent soldier who was a keen strategist writing a document praising Chevauche tactics over garrison strategy in the latter stages of the Wars. #castlecombe #englishvillages #englishcountryside #wiltshire #cotswolds #quaintvillage #marketcross #medievalhistory #medieval #middleages #medievalvillage #historical #historiansofinstagram #ukhiking #hikinguk #hiking_collective #hiking_daily #historicalblog #travelblog #wanderlust #england

A quick video on the craft of single needle knitting, also known as nalbinding! While I'm making a commissioned hat all I can think is how clever this craft is! In 6500BE it was used to make plant fibre bowls in caves and the skill was passed down through generations and generations into the 21st century! It's survived industrialisation, mass manufacturing and newer craft trends like knitting and while not many people nalbind anymore, historical reenactment groups are keeping the ancient craft alive! Nalbinding with 100% wool makes thick warm items so they're perfect for wearing in cold reenactment evenings and then displaying the ancient skill to the public in the day! . . . #medieval #reenactment #medievalreenactment #medievalclothing #nalebinding #nalbinding #historicalreenactment #historicalblog #historyfacts #historicalcraft #medievalcraft #viking #vikingreenactment #vikingcraft #reenacting #reenactor #naalbinding #vikinghat #traditionalcrafts #craft #woolcraft #fibreart #history

🔥 The longest day of the year ended with a spectacular sunset from a wonderful small town I randomly stepped in: Monte Sant'Angelo. Simply gorgeous! The Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo (the bell tower and entrance of which you can see in the phs) is just one of the many wonderful glimpses that include rough alleys, breathtaking views of the Gulf of Manfredonia and the Norman-Swabian-Angevin-Aragonese Castle (... someone else .. ??). 🏛️ Although the city centre is officially datable around the year 1000 CE (quite recent!) the legends about the appearance of St. Michael to whom a cave and then the sanctuary were dedicated, made the place an important stop for pilgrims and crusaders headed for the Holy Land. In 2011 the sanctuary not only became a UNESCO heritage site but became also part of the serial site " The Longobards in Italy, Places of Power, 568 – 774 A.D." which includes only 7 sites throughout Italy! #discoverpuglia #sunset #gargano #explore #historicalblog

🏛️🌅 Backwards, the first photos of the dawn and sunset of the longest day of the year 2020, which I decided to dedicate completely to the free and very unscheduled exploration of random beautiful places 😁 Here in the photo, in addition to the beautiful star that gives us light and warmth and whose eclipse has been really minimal, also the bursting and wise abbey of San Vito (Polignano) close to the port. Probably from the 10th century, it was built following the legend of a noblewoman from Salerno who, drowning in the Sele river, was saved and brought here right from San Vito. After the suppression of the monastic orders that followed one another, it was incorporated into the marquis palace of the Tavassi-La Greca. @ig_puglia_ @polignanoamare #igpuglia #historicalblog #slowtravel
