WHAT THIS WEEK 📺 WATCHING: I started a rewatch of The Bold Type which I LOVE and keeping up with Under the Bridge, Grey’s, Abbott Elementary, SVU and Station 19 📖 READING: I finished Love, Lies and Cherry Pie, If We Were Villains, A Crane Among Wolves and The Seven Year Slip. Currently reading If You Knew My Name and Assistant to the Villain. 🎶 LISTENING TO: Still unpacking TTPD, but I needed a little break from being a tortured poet so I’ve also been listening to scores from Nancy Meyers movies, folklore and girl in red. Grayson had a small cold this week plus his first tooth is starting to poke through so he was a little (okay, a lot) fussy lately. And of course, I got sick on Thursday so we were homebodies most of the week. But it was still a pretty good week! 💛 r e v i e w 💛 . 📖 🎧 Goodnight Mr Tom by Michelle Magorian . A children’s classic about Willy, an 8 year old boy evacuated to the country during WW2, and Mr Tom, his grumpy host. . I started this one on audio but couldn’t get the narration speed right, which annoyed me immensely so switched to the paperback! . Oh poor Willy, and poor Tom 😢😢 they started out as tragic figures in need of love and care, lonely and emotionally battered for reasons that became clear as the book went on. They were both traumatised by past events and needed each other more than they knew. . Tom was just like a gruff but gentle grandad with an absolute heart of gold. Willy was a timid soul who had to learn even the most basic of life’s tasks. It was just the most heartwarming and tender story. . The characters were great - I loved the neighbours and kids pulling together in their little merry band, they built up trust and camaraderie and helped each other through, in their own little ways. Willie was respected and had friends for the first time in his life. . Heads up - this isn’t a lighthearted book, it’s got some really heavy topics including child abuse. I wasn’t prepared for what happened when Will went home to see his poorly mother. Wow. That got me. I wasn’t expecting to see that in a kids book! . Luckily the ending left me with a smile on my face, there were plenty of uplifting moments to off-set the sadness. ⭐️ BOOK REVIEW ⭐️ . . A CRANE AMONG WOLVES Release Date: May 14 This is definitely a darker YA historical fiction novel, but it sheds light on one of the more tragic parts of Korean history and in a really engaging and compelling way. ITT took me some time to warm up to Iseul, but her character growth was a really amazing journey. Daehyun’s chapters were my favorites. I liked that there was romance in the story, but it never overpowered the main plot. The big reveal of the main mystery definitely surprised me, but I wasn’t completely shocked and that’s okay. I very much enjoyed the author’s note at the beginning, telling us the history behind this story and also the historical note at the end going over what happened to Korea after the events of the book. I think this is a very important read, especially for a look at a lesser known part of history to some of us. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Somebody Knows By Pamela Ungashick This debut book was shocking, raw, heart wrenching but so very real. It is set in the late 1940s, in a time when people didn’t interfere in other people’s “family business” but everyone knew when something wasn’t quite right in a family. The story peels back that awful truth that usually a parent’s behavior is mimicked by how they were treated by their own mother, perpetuating the abuse cycle. The story is sort of a harrowing coming of age story of Audrey who grows up dirt poor under the iron fist of a vengeful narcissistic mother who is only using her for her own means. This gritty, suspenseful and sad story will literally gut you and make you so mad, but also have your cheering on Audrey and her brother, bringing a warmth to your heart. I found the title quite fitting both in the literal sense, as Somebody did know in the story, but also in the figurative sense. In the real world somebody always knows. The question is, what does somebody do with that knowledge; offer help or turn a blind eye. This story is emotional, powerful, and heavy but what a great debut read! ⭐️BOOK REVIEW ⭐️ . . IF WE WERE VILLAINS This was definitely the dark academia book I needed in my Tortured Poets Department Era. I loved how it was set up like a play with scenes instead of chapters and how the dialogue was like lines in a script. It was so easy to get swept up in this world of Shakespeare and friendship dynamics filled with neuroses and competition. Oliver was a really compelling character who sees himself as a lesser talented actor among his friends who he views as more family. I felt like the pacing was pretty perfect. It was a medium burn, not moving too fast, but fast enough to keep you tense and curious to see what will become of these characters. I highly recommend this one for fans of a dark academia setting, Shakespeare, complicated friendship dynamics and tense storytelling. Hele plottet er gennemført fra start til slut og man glemmer helt at man læser til tider og at man ikke befinder sig i slut 1700-tallet. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Forgetting to Remember By MJ Rose This was a spectacularly magical story combining fascinating historical fiction and dazzling romance with time travel. I was absolutely put into a spell by the time travel story where the FMC found true love 80 years before she even existed! This story comes to us just outside the fall out of WWII, where London is recovering from the disaster, men who survived the war are returning home, and employers are scrambling to place those men back into “suitable” jobs which means hard working women who earned their places are being pushed aside. Our FMC fights for her job, and in the process finds herself tapping into her ancestral witch magic that she thought she never had, transporting her back into the late 1800s where she meets the love of her life. I am super fascinated by the jewel-framed miniature eye portraits that were in style in the 18th and 19th centuries, it was definitely something new for me. The romance behind the stories was so much fun. This story was beautifully written with an absolutely perfect ending that had me going, AWE!!! 🎉Pub Day Review🎉 Darling Girls This is the fifth thriller by Sally Hepworth that I’ve read. In Darling Girls, she continues her tried and true formula for family thrillers. Three women, Norah, Jessica, and Alicia, are like sisters after surviving their foster care experience. They still carry the psychological scars as adults, and then need to revisit it all again when they get questioned about the events from 25-years ago. Their stories unfold in two timelines, slowly revealing what really happened back then. This was a quick easy read for me with short chapters alternating among the three girls telling their story and their point of view as more information is revealed. I actually guessed what had happened before the end, but was still impressed with how the story unfolded. I recommend it to those who enjoy domestic thrillers. This is a dark story which covers hard topics, so sensitive readers should do their research. A Journey of the Mind by @brendabenningauthor I was so happy to be apart of the book tours for both of her books, A Journey of the Heart and A Journey of the Mind but hosted by @lovebookstours Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book takes us back to Bellbrook Springs, this time following Sally Jo, one of the main characters in this series, A Journey of the Mind is set after the events that occur in book 1: A Journey of the Heart. Sally Jo is an inspiring author who is planning to attend graduate school with Lundyn. Sally Jo has been having these flashes which show her things she can’t explain - using her conspiracy theory brain she is thrown into the world of the FBI and their investigation into a missing child. I throughly enjoyed this books and it was really good to be back in Bellbrook Springs, despite all the things that happen in this small town - it’s definitely somewhere I’d like to live. The dynamics between the characters are very real and just what you’d imagine working with and knowing an FBI agent to be like. I did feel a sense of warmth when they were all together eating Italian food! What I really enjoyed about this book was Sally Jo’s realisation in herself and the milestones she has to hit before she achieves her goal. My brain works very much like Sally Jo’s, so I felt a real connection to this character. I am constantly trying to guess what comes next and who the suspect is. Although this book touches on the sensitive topic of child abduction - the author also provides the reader with lots of feel good chapters and characters, which don’t take away from the seriousness of child abduction, but make for fast and engaging reading. 🎉Pub Day Review🎉 Extinction This thriller is a must-read for those who enjoyed Jurassic Park. This time, the woolly mammoth is de-extincted, along with some other large mammals from the Pleistocene Era, by a billionaire and his company at the Erebus Resort in Colorado. Law enforcement gets called when a honeymooning couple are missing and presumed dead at the resort. The shocking story is then strikingly told as more and more becomes revealed. As a reader of Preston & Child early books, like Relic and Reliquary when they first came out, I loved the dark creepiness of it all and how there was always a surprise twist that I wasn’t expecting. In his solo efforts, Preston is so good at writing storylines that could possibly be true and then taking it to another level, treating the reader to a spectacular ride. In Extinction, he explores the moral ambiguity surrounding genetic experiments and showcases strong women characters as well. And the Afterword at the end is so informative about where the current technology stands. I was so happy to receive an ARC through a Goodreads Giveaway. And I finished the propulsive novel in 3 days, just in time to review it for its Pub Day. ⭐️ BOOK REVIEW ⭐️ . . LOVE, LIES AND CHERRY PIE Release Date: May 7 This book really took me by surprise with how much I enjoyed it! It took me a minute to really settle into the story, but once I did, it was hard to put down. The romance was very sweet and Mark and Emily had great chemistry, but the best part of this book for me was the complicated family dynamics. Emily’s mother absolutely drove me nuts at first, but once she and Emily really sit down and communicated with each other, some really beautiful connections happened and her behavior made a whole lot of sense. Emily herself was such a great character. Seeing her confidence grow as a writer and also an adult was really lovely. Mark was wonderful as well and I loved getting his POV in the second half of the book. I definitely would have liked it in the first, but it made sense why it was written that way. I highly recommend this one for fans of the fake dating trope and messy family dynamics. So many pages I was simply cracking up. Collin’s character is written so beautifully, I really love his character and everything he represents. Sweet Lydia reminds me so much of my mom, her strength in the face sorrow, the love she has for her child and the peace of letting go after realizing he’s okay. These characters are just so relatable and as the reader you easily watch them grow. This story is written and delivered beautifully. 😱WHAT A BOOK!😱 This is the first book I’ve read by @johnmarrs.author and I’m telling you now it won’t be my last. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book is an extremely dark and twisted thriller, which had me HOOKED the whole way through. We meet Mia and Finn who have just bought a run down, derelict house via an auction… intending to fix it up and turn it into their dream home. With funds dwindling away, to Mia’s surprise she finds out she’s pregnant, but they can make it work. Whilst removing wallpaper in their soon to be nursery, Mia discovers something unnerving… leading them to explore the attic. What they find is definitely not for the faint hearted. Their beautiful baby boy arrives, which is meant to bring joy into the lives of those around him, but with Mia’s obsession to the horrendous acts that have taken place in her home, she sets out to uncover the truth, calling into question those closest to her. What a phenomenal book! John Marrs has become my auto buy author now. With its disturbing twists and turns and a tense atmosphere, this book captured me, I was completely absorbed in the story. 📖 📝📖📝📖 Book review 📖📝📖📝📖 For KD Casey, the game is more important than the romance. If you like baseball, these books were a refreshing change. Each has an MC that is Jewish. And the game is a struggle to at least one of the MCs (not just for being queer in a non queer world). (I got a little confused about timelines because they don’t take place after each other but it works out.) Fire Season was my favorite of the trilogy. There’s just something about bi-awakenings. Charlie is the star of the team, but has severe social anxiety. His wife is soon to be is ex-wife and he hasn’t told anyone. There’s a new relief pitcher. And someone talks him into getting a dog. Reid is a recovering alcoholic that hasn’t been making enough money to afford to live alone. Charlie lets him come stay (he does need help with the dog). And things develop. Narrated by Jonah Waters. ⭐️BOOK REVIEW ⭐️ . . MONDAY’S NOT COMING As expected, this was an absolutely brutal book. My heart absolutely broke for Claudia as she did everything she could to not only find Monday, but make other people care about finding her too. The story went the way I sadly thought it would, BUT that twist was absolutely jaw dropping. I mean, I sat there, silent and processing for a good ten minutes before continuing on. I loved the multiple timelines, but I do wish they had been a bit more clear, time and date wise. It got a little confusing at times. However, I thought this was such a great look at how easily a missing person, especially of color, can just fall through the cracks of a community and not be taken seriously until it’s too late. It is a tough book to read with its subject matter, but it is so worth it. Oh friends, I am behind in reviews and will probably never catch up! So here's a couple audiobook reviews to stay in the bookstagram loop for anyone who enjoys knowing what I'm reading. All the roses for both of these books. The writing style for each is so different. But both dig deep into current issues that matter deeply. Both writers look straight into the sun of these issues, not backing down one bit, and they bring depth and incredible nuance to their issues. First up: This Is How It Always Is by Laurie Frankel--okay, I am a devoted Frankel fan even more deeply! Another family drama and I loved, loved, loved it. It is definitely not your run of the mill story and I couldn't be more grateful to those of you who pointed me to this story after loving Family, Family. And immediately after that one, I listened to Anita de Monte Laughs Last by Xochitl Gonzalez, an amazingly serendipitous read with @readwithtoni ‘s group after we had just finished Good and Mad by Rebecca Traister last month. I will forever love Anita and Raquel in this novel spanning two different decades and ripping into issues of women's social roles, especially in the white male canon of the art world. If you haven't yet read these novels, pick up the audiobook versions for them. They are fantastic! Weekend is shaping up to be a busy one as I debate which audiobook to start next.
