I need your help folks! Hands up who remembers my Daily Studies Project? The original studies painted around the British coast which raised thousands of pounds for the RNLI? Well, I’m off on another adventure. This time exploring and painting at extraordinary places all over the British Isles. Mountains, moorland, cities and coast. Each original artwork will be auctioned over 24hrs on Facebook and Instagram, helping to raise awareness for conservation projects all over the U.K. The first original artwork from this project will be posted 9.00 am on Monday 22nd which by sheer coincidence is Earth Day! Perfect timing. But I need your help. I would love to explore the little known and extraordinary places that mean something to you on my travels countrywide, so drop me an email at [email protected] mentioning your favourite location and it may well become part of the story! Thank you for your continued support and interest my beauties 😊 #glynmaceystudio #cornishart #cornishartist #contemporaryart #britishart #thisancientland #britishlandscape #britishcoast #mysteriousbritain #penwithgallery #penwithsocietyofarts #stivessocietyofartists

Just back from a visit on a misty day to Boscawen-Un stone circle. Nineteen stones surround an off-centre gnomon-like stone inclined at an angle. One good thing about the community here on Instagram is that previously isolated people like myself who were in 'weird' folklore things back in the '90s suddenly realised that they weren't so alone after all. Other people were into this shit too! It has been wonderful to see Weird Walk grow from it's humble beginnings into what it is today, and produced this wonderful book of musings and wanderings. Coincidentally perhaps, it arrives in my home on the same week as Julian Cope's 25th anniversary booklet on how he created The Modern Antiquarian. Here are both pictured alongside some other things that informed the makers of the Weird Walk. Day 17 (still catching up) is to the books of Janet and Colin Bord. Picked up in a second hand shop when I was a kid, mysterious Britain was very much my first Fortean foray into stones, monsters, ghosts, ley lines, fairies, UFOs and the rest. Pure nostalgia alongside the likes of Arthur c Clarke's mysterious world and Michael aspels strange but true, (which I would like to be put on dvd please). The books still stand up better than most from the same period with the secret country pictured here being one of my favourites. If you ever see them, get them. I've still got my eye out for their eye catching cover to alien animals jumping out at me in any book shop I come across. #mysteriousbritain #thesecretcountry

Sancreed 13th century churchyard cross “the especially famous Sancreed cross stands about ten yards from the porch in the centre of the churchyard fronting closely on a footpath and looking towards the east window. This cross is a block of granite – a huge monolith – standing now nine feet out of the ground and set in a block nine inches thick. Formerly two feet of the shank was buried, so that its noble proportions were stunted.” “This cross is much weather-worn, grey, and yellow-lichen covered. It dates most probably from the eleventh century. It is richly sculptured on all four sides. On the front or east side of the head the figure of our Lord in bold relief is still dimly discernible. The figure is clothed in a tunic to the knees, the sleeves expanded. Both arms are bent and slightly raised towards the head. The legs are painfully straight, and rest on a rounded projection below the nick of the stone.   The toes are apparently turned in.” “The symbolic design in the middle panel is that around which much controversy has raged. A spear-head, some say a lily – the emblem of the Virgin – on a thin shank or stem (twenty-three inches long) rests on the top and centre of a shapely, rather conventional-looking chalice or vase, fourteen inches long.” England's Riviera by J. Huggate Dykes is a rare beast. It's dated to the Bronze Age but may still have been in use and possibly enhanced in the iron Age. Situated in the hillier section of the Wolds in East Yorkshire, it consists of a series of parallel banks and ditches, or dykes as they're referred to in these parts. Nobody knows quite what their purpose was as they obviously aren't defensive and are a mixture of single banks up to a mile in length and multiple close-knit (up to four dykes as in the opening photo)at the North Eastern terminus so possibly they're elaborate boundary markers or maybe had some ceremonial purpose? At any rate it took a lot of digging! #huggatedykes #ancientbritain #britishprehistory #bronzeage #earthworks #bronzeagedykes #ancientboundarymarker #prehistory #prehistoric #ancienthistory #ceremonialdykes #ceremonialearthworks #archaeology #landscape #landscapephotography #englishcountryside #walking #dykes #mysteriousbritain

St.James's Church -Avebury. Historical investigation has revealed the existence of a monastic settlement in Avebury from as early as the 3rd Century BCE. St James's was a departure point for pilgrims travelling to the port of Bristol - embarking upon ships in order to proceed on to Compostela, Rome and Jerusalem. This church is one of eight forming - The Upper Kennet Benefice, from Broad Hinton to the North (which held a relic) to the the church of Winterbourne Monkton from which pilgrims would walk barefoot to Avebury in order to receive blessings. All these churches are rich in pilgim graffiti and St James's additionally contains an ambulatory niche, a rescued medieval rood screen loft and a facinating Norman tub font. The font dates from the early 12th century and is finely carved depicting a Christian figure that appears to be ‘stamping out paganism’ and heralding in the new religion with 'one' eternal God. A bishop or ecclesiastic wearing a “short skirt” and depicted with his crozier in one of the intersecting arches stamping on a winged serpent or dragon with a long curling tail which, simultaneously is biting his foot or cloak. This is a reference to the battle between the established ‘serpent-power’ worship of the pre-Christian temple at Avebury, and the new Christianity, according to Janet and Colin Bord in their book "Mysterious Britain"  I've visited Avebury countless times, yet had never popped in to explore this facinating church. . . . . #avebury #thewayofstjames #pilgrimroute #thepilgrimway #medievalarchitecture #mysteriousbritain

Today we stopped off at Crossraguel Abbey where we were regaled with amazing tales of benevolent time travellers; dark shades in wide brimmed hats appearing on sunny days; a mystical ley line dissecting the transept; local wiccans scattering pine cones; mysterious road deaths and a watchful raven. Also, there is a Pictish bull and serpent carved into one of the walls and Robert the Bruce was probably christened there. But most stunning to me, there is a skylight below the bell tower where the sun shines though at 6pm on Mayday and illuminates the high alter. #ayrshirehistory #mysteriousbritain #blackmonk #maybole

The first pair of photos are The Whispering Knights, the remains of the burial chamber of a Neolithic Portal Dolmen. This is possibly the earliest monument within the Rollright complex. The second pair of photos are The King Stone, a lone standing stone just North of The King's Men stone circle, but is it an outlier to the stone circle, a guide directing you to the circle or even a part of a long disappeared stone row? The other interesting thing is that the road separating the King Stone and The King's Men stone circle is also the county dividing line between Warwickshire and Oxfordshire, but the builders of these monuments obviously didn't know this at the time of its construction! #rollrightstones #rollright #neolithic #thewhisperingknights #thekingstone #ancientbritain #ancienthistory #prehistory #prehistoric #mythology #archaeology #englishcountryside #standingstones #rituallandscape #ancientmonuments #megalithic #megalithicmarvels #megaliths #longcompton #mythology #mysteriousbritain #mothershipton #menhir #monolith

Barrows, ancient burial sites, sacred earth temples, a place of veneration of the ancestors, portals to the underworld and the realm of the aes sidhe, fairy folk, whatever you believe or know to be true they are places of mystery and intrigue. These two pictured are Bronze Age round barrows in the Lincolnshire wolds, positioned above the nearby meandering mighty River bain, a fine example of a chalk stream, 85 % of the planets chalk streams are in England, 10% of which are flowing in Lincolnshire. Spring Maiden 💚 Visiting the Norman church of St Mary in Maiden Newton, Dorset. The name of the town could suggest that the manor was once possessed by nuns, or that there was once a small anchoress cell here. An anchoress was a type of living saint who lived in a solitary cell, often attached to a church. The anchoritic life is one of the earliest forms of Christian monasticism. This tradition was brought to an end between 1536 and 1539, with the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII. Two miles south-east of St Mary’s, Maiden Newton, is a field known as Nunnery Meadow, which again suggests the existence of a religious house of spiritual women in this neighbourhood. A mosaic pavement was discovered here, dating to about 350 CE. The most striking feature of this mosaic is the depiction of Neptune, god of water. If you look a little closer however, you will notice the Greek monogram XP meaning Christ. Does this mean that Christians and pagans lived side by side here, or that the Romano-Celts were practicing both religions simultaneously? Early Christianity was practiced as a Roman Mystery Cult before it was adopted as the official state religion. I imagine that Maiden Newton was home to a spiritual women’s community of Mystery initiates. The Roman mosaic was the floor to what could have been a pagan temple, with Latin inscriptions praising Neptune. The Christian Mysteries were particularly attractive to women. Mystery Cults were not exclusive to one another, it was possible to be initiated into several Mysteries at the same time as following the official state religion. The mysterious north door of the church of St Mary is said to be the oldest door in England, with original hinges. It predates the Norman building, as a Saxon church stood here previously. Whatever the mystic women of Maiden Newton believed and practiced, their legacy lives on in the very name of this town. #springmaiden #maidengoddess #celticpaganism #romanoceltictemple #templeofneptune #mysterycult #christianmysticism #anchorite #anchoress #medievalnunnery #maidennewton #folkreligion #folkcatholicism #syncretism #christopaganism #mysteriousbritain #britishfolklore

We posted this picture on the stories yesterday and it received such a lot of love and quite a few questions too! So we thought we would repost it here. The stone graves over look the bay at Heysham Barrows. They are quite mysterious as they clearly were used for adults but there are a few smaller ones too. They date from the 10th or 11th century and are carved out of the rock. They were clearly used as some sort of burial place for important individuals. Heysham Barrows was the site where it is recorded that druids lived. There is also a Holy Well at the entrance to the chapel further down the hill. They were photographed for the front of The Best of Black Sabbath. #thewitchingmuseum #witch #witches #magicalplacesonearth #mysteriousbritain #stonegraves #smallmuseum #coldwinterwalks

Men an Tol, Cornwall. . One of the most recognisable Neolithic monuments in the British Isles is the Men an Tol which in old Cornish simply means holed stone. It is the hole in the round central stone which is what makes this structure unique, there are apparently only three other holed stones in Britain and they all come from Cornwall but none are better than Men an Tol. This mysterious structure consists of four standing stones and the holed stone. Experts in the past believed that perhaps the structure is a fertility symbol, the standing stones bring phallic and the holed stone representing the female, from certain angles the stones can be aligned. However recent studies suggest that there are 13 more monoliths buried around the monument it is possible that the visible stones were once part of a larger stone circle and in more recent history they have been rearranged. It is possible then that the holed stone as part of the circle may have been aligned to a celestial event or another focal point in the landscape. Of course the monument has attracted much superstition in later centuries, it was believed that passing an infant through the hole could cure rickets and it was even believed that touching the stone could cure "the Kings illness" (scrofula) a disease that normally could only be cured by the touch of the ruling monarch! Such was the stones power! It was also said to be haunted by fairy beings and piskies on certain nights. The last picture was my attempt to squeeze through! . #menantol #stonecircles #megalithic #stonehenge #henge #standingstones #magicalplace #monolith #holedstone #stoneage #prehistoricmonument #prehistoric #prehistoricarchitecture #westpenwith #cornwall #cornishsites #englishcountryside #moorland #dingdongmines #visitcornwall #historicalpost #prehistoricarchaeology #archaeologicalsite #mysteriousbritain #magicalplaces #folklore #mythsandlegends #paganism

Carn Eunys, Cornwall. . Inside the fern lined "Fogou" in the ancient Iron Age Village of Carn Euny. This iron age village similar to Chysauster was a collective of 9 stone iron age round houses and courtyard houses probably established as early as 200 BC and abandoned in 400 AD with the collapse of the Roman world. The most tantalising feature is the central subterranean tunnel known as a Fogou which seems to have been a common feature in Iron Age Cornwall and also Northern Scotland. These tunnels are very mysterious and archaeologists are still undecided whether they were food storage tunnels, a ritual shrine or even an escape tunnel or hideaway, it is likely they served all kinds of functions but what our Iron Age ancestors had in mind has been lost to time. Carn Eunys is in deep and magical Cornwall where the hedgerows engulfing the winding farm tracks are higher than your car and the land is dotted with old stones and old legends. . #carneuny #penwith #cornwall #megalithicsite #monolithic #ironagesettlement #romans #prehistoricUK #fogou #souterrain #cornishhistory #archaeology #prehistoricarchaeology #theprehistoric #neolithic #bronzeage #ironage #romanhistory #folklore #oldengland #theoldways #paganism #heathenism #druidism #archaeologicalsite #mysteriousbritain #visitcornwall #traveluk #magicalplaces

Documenting some of this years gallivanting. Avebury is just as impressive as Stonehenge and perhaps more magical. Pictured is Avebury’s stones, West Kennet Long Barrow, Silbury Hill and a bonus pic of Salisbury Cathedral, even though it doesn’t fit the pre-Christian theme. #weirdwalk #stoneclub #juliancopesbarmyarmy #mysteriousbritain #megaliths #neolithic #standingstones

No self-respecting lover of #mysteriousbritain and #wyrdlore would pass by the 12th century church of #Kilpeck. An astonishing #greenman #foliatemask, that #sheelanagig , and the #crwth or fiddle player from the English Acoustic Collective’s album, Ghosts. Not to mention all manner of beasties.

🍂🌲Beautiful gifts from my friends in Lanarkshire!🌲🍂Trees and history, my favourite things! The bowl and coaster were made from a limb of St Margaret's yew, Dalzell, that had fallen. Yew trees date back 1000s of years and were often planted in kirkyards and, before that, pagan groves and can therefore be used to date an ancient designed landscape - my friend who discovered all this has made me see the land in a completely different way. The pen was also turned from a redwood🌲 🍂🌳🌲🌳🍂 #historictreeawareness #woodwork #mysticaltrees #ancienttrees #yew #yewwood #yewtrees #gifts #wood #trees #woodenbowl #eibe #historictrees #mysticalscotland #woodgrain #woodworking #polishedwood #mysticalbritain #druid #woodcrafts #mysteriousbritain

Wonderful, impromptu afternoon out at the Rollright stones. I even got a chance to sit alone in the centre of the stone circle while the site was briefly empty 😊 Through the weathered hole of the Jurassic limestone you can just see a sculpture that is presumably intended to represent the witch from the famous Rollright legend, although oddly I haven't been able to find any further info on this sculpture. Maybe she just flew in for the day to visit too? #rollrightstones #Stonecircle #neolithicsite #ancientbritain #folkloreandlegends #mysteriousbritain

🌿🪨Exploring the high tors of Dartmoor!🪨🌿 I've been fascinated by the moor since watching the Basil Rathbone version of "The Hound of the Baskervilles" when I was 5 years old - little did I know I would be living and working on the edge of the moor for six years and returning whenever I can. Such an ancient, wild land - some of the field boundaries date from the bronze age. 🪨🪨🪨 🪨🪨🌿 🪨🪨🪨 🪨🪨🪨🌿 🪨🪨🌿 #dartmoor #moor #devon #moorland #england #greatbritain #großbritannien #tor #widecombeinthemoor #piltor #mysteriousbritain #mysticalbritain #wilderness #countryside #devoncountryside #wildplaces #visitbritain #quietinthewild
