Watch where you walk off the beaten track around the Knockan area of Assynt, this small looking hole in the ground has been covered with creeping moss, you may see it and wander over to look in the hole, but this would be a big mistake ! Here lies Knockan Pot, one of only a few potholes in Sutherland The moss has grown over the entrance shaft considerably and if you did not know this existed and stumbled upon it without realising you would fall through the moss into a shaft, this is a 42m deep pothole, anyway it was actually 3-quarters full of water this evening, but we will return when it drys 😈 #caving #potholing #assynt #knockancrag #knockanpot

📍The Globe at Knockan Crag Knockan Crag is part of the North West Highlands Geopark, which was created in 2004 and forms part of the International Network of Geoparks. (Geoparks are UNESCO designated areas containing one or more area of geological importance). Scottish Natural Heritage manages the Knockan Crag National Nature Reserve and provides an interpretation centre, car park and various walks along the crag explaining the features. They include artwork such as this one which is called ‘The Globe’ by Joe Smith. Knockan Crag --> Ullapool We stopped for a chilly (and icy) walk at Knockan Crag nature reserve, an area of special scientific interest which has some really cool geology. Some of the rocks here are 1000 million years old and strangely some of the older rocks were found on top of the younger rocks which caused a lot of controversy and interest among geologists back in the early 1900s! The scenery driving to Ullapool was absolutely stunning past more beautiful munros like Suilven, Cùl Mòr and Stac Pollaidh. Na al onze wandelavonturen wouden we eens iets anders doen. Maar wat? Onze gastheer en gastvrouw hadden wel een cool idee: een road trip langs The North Coast 500 doorheen de regio Assynt. NC500 is een lus van 830km die je vanuit Inverness meeneemt naar de mooiste plekjes langs de noordelijke kust van Schotland. In Assynt vind je zo van die pareltjes: Knockan Crag, Ardvreck Caste, Clashnessie Falls… Knockan Crag werd onze eerste tussenstop. Een geologische site die weterschappers in de ban hield van een groot geologisch mysterie. Ze konden er niet bij dat de bovenste lagen van de aardkorst die ze daar aantroffen, ouder waren dan de onderste lagen. Benjamin Peach en John Horne plozen het raadsel uit en kwamen met een verhaal over platentektoniek en 2 botsende continenten. De plaat met ouder gesteente wordt over de plaat met jonger gesteente geduwd. De puzzelstukjes vielen in elkaar! Op naar pareltje 2: De ruïne van “Ardvreck Castle”. Een schitterende plek met veel geschiedenis voor de liefhebbers! We reden even van NC500 af en reden er verderop weer op. Amai… dat werd ook weer een nieuw avontuur! Ooit gehoord van Single-track? Een kilometerslange smalle weg met tweerichtingsverkeer en met heel veel bochten waar je zomaar even 60 miles/hour mag rijden. Het werd een route met schitterende uitzichten. Wat is Schotland toch een mooi land! Onderweg naar LochInver maakten we nog 2 tussenstops: “Clashnessie Falls” en “Achmelvich Beach”. In LochInver vind je de LochInver Larder, waar je kan smullen van lekkere pies. De dag erna namen onze reisgezellen ons mee op stap. Een keer de andere kant op richting Gairloch. Opnieuw een pareltje! Sarah en Christof namen ons mee naar Mellon Udrigle Beach en naar Laide Forest. Het hoeven dus niet altijd stevige bergwandelingen te zijn! To miejsce kryje w sobie klucz do niesamowitej historii zderzenia kontynentów i intryg naukowych. Możesz tam na własne oczy zobaczyć cud, który pozwolił na rozwiązanie jednej z największych tajemnic geologicznych na świecie! A to uczucie, kiedy gołymi rękoma można dotknać 500 milionów lat historii jest po prostu niesamowite! Więcej zdradzać nie będę 🤫, dodam tylko, że to miejsce zdecydowanie warto odwiedzić, będąc na trasie North Coast 500. Dostępne są tam 3 szlaki: • najkrótszy i najłatwiejszy niebieski Quarry Trail, który zawraca zanim trasa stanie się nieco trudna. • czerwony The Thrust Trail prowadzi z centrum dla zwiedzających Rock Room do Moine Thrust i należy raczej też do łatwych. • najdłuższy, żółty Crag Top Trail prowadzi na szczyt góry, z której rozpościerają się niezwykłe widoki na Coigach i Assynt (jak jest mgła to też jest ładnie 😁). Ma 2 km, można się trochę zmęczyć, ale spokojnie idąc i pijąc herbatę na szczycie przejście zajmuje raptem godzinę. Predikce silného deště naštěstí ne úplně vyšla, takže jsme navštívili skvěle vytvořený geologický park/stezku Knockan Crag, pak zajeli k majáku, kde bylo hodně vyplavených medůz, ale zase i šance spatřit velrybu, což se ale nepoštěstilo. No a na závěr pro mě trošku náročný most přes údolí tak 50 metrů nad korytem Falls of Measach. Zítra je v plánu pár archeo lokalit:D #knockancrag #fallsofmeasach #ullapoole #scotland
