When we think about what most parents want for their babies and children, most parents will say they want them to be happy and healthy. The thing is, it's our role as parents to teach our kids the skills they need to be happy and healthy and to have realistic expectations about this (happiness is not a constant). One of those important skills is self-compassion. You may have been parented in a way that did not teach self-compassion and often times our own parents struggled to have self-compassion, therefore they were not able to teach us how to do so for ourselves. When we model self-compassion we teach our kids how to have self-compassion. Also, when we are able to be compassionate with ourselves, it helps us extend compassion towards others more, like our babies and kids. Do you struggle to have self-compassion? Hey there! Welcome to the circus we call life! I’m CJ and I’m a young mama (20) of a beautiful baby boy named Kaisen! I was born and raised in Canada🇨🇦, where we still live currently. I have always been a fan of travel and the outdoors, spending most my childhood outdoors and taking many trips with my family when I was younger, then with friends as I grew up and now with my son! Kaisen had a rough start to his life, it was very difficult for myself and our family as well. He was born prematurely on October 24th, 2023 due to health complications with both of us, and he spent just under 3 months in the NICU, which was 45mins away from our home. For the first couple days I was unable to be with him as I was under hospital care for a minimum 3-4 days while he was transferred to the NICU at the children’s hospital. Despite the odds and everything else combined, he remained beyond strong and resilient and got better and was able to come home, and I was able to do the same and so could my family thanks to him! Being a first time parent, and a young one is full of so many surprises, both good and bad emotions, learning experiences, hard work and tons of memory making, but it is such a rewarding experience no matter what! 🐝 B E E S Unit Study 🍯 We’ve been learning all about bees the past two weeks and we’ve been doing this study mostly family style. We’ve studied bees before, but have covered more this time. I’ve loved unit studies from the beginning and have found my boys respond well to them. Nature studies in particular give us the opportunity to learn about God’s creation and this has by far been one of the highlights of homeschooling. 🍃 Though I’ve been stung a time or two 😒 (mostly by wasps though), bees are pretty incredible creatures. One thing we’ve discussed is the reasoning for why bees make their hives out of hexagons. Hexagons are sturdier than other shapes and fit together without gaps, making for a stronger and more efficient hive. This also came up in my 7th grader’s math the other day when he was finding the area of hexagons, so it was a timely connection! The way bees communicate, carry pollen, turn nectar into honey, and do various jobs in the hive…God is so creative and detailed-oriented! Some activities we’ve done or will do: 🍯 Read lots of books about bees 🐝 Discuss bees life cycle, anatomy, their hives, how they make honey, the roles of the 3 main types of bees, etc. 🍯 Bee sensory bin 🐝 Lemon play dough bee tray 🍯 Roll beeswax candles to re-stock our poetry teatime supply 🐝 Bee artwork 🍯 Watch educational video clips about bees Once more colorful flowers 🌸💐🌼 make their appearance in our yard, so will the bees, and we can observe them that way as well. Every parent dreads short naps. You just sit down after getting baby to sleep and there is barely any time to relax before they need you again. Here (at) fullfeedings we believe the key to getting great naps is making sure your baby is asleep by their age-appropriate Optimal Wake Time (OWT). We recommend Suggested OWT’s for each and every babe until 4 years old via MONTHLY GUIDES that come with our Online Programs. At the very least, these are a great starting point to work towards longer naps. Undertired is MUCH better than overtired and our OWT’s do what they can to prevent over tiredness at each and every age. In addition to following age-appropriate OWT’s, here are 3 tips for longer naps with your baby: 1- Make sure your baby is full. Hungry babies don’t sleep well so making sure your baby has a full feeding in every cycle (between sleeps) will help make longer naps possible. 2- Help your baby to sleep. Babies struggle to regulate themselves, and if you are expecting your baby to fall asleep “on-time” by themselves, it can often cause them to stay awake too long, which can lead to a shorter nap. Rocking them to sleep “on time” is a great way to ensure longer naps are possible. 3- Help extend naps when possible. If baby wakes early from a nap, help them to extend it (i.e. contact nap) and this will help to keep feeds adequately spaced out and also help encourage longer naps. If you need help with naps and nighttime sleep with your baby or toddler, we offer affordable Online Sleep Programs that alleviate the need to “sleep train” and DO NOT INVOLVE CRY IT OUT. I’m in bed sick today and felt so badly this morning that I wasn’t able to get the kids ready for camp/child care like I usually do…which reminded me of this old comic. As Ben and the kids were about to walk out the door I asked my daughter to brush her hair and Ben responded with, “She’s fine!” After they left I was thinking about it and realized that I don’t really care if she brushes her hair—it did look fine—I just don’t want to be judged as a mother bc my daughter hasn’t brushed her hair. Ben doesn’t worry about this kind of thing bc he’s never felt judged for how the kids look or act.
