The pervasive influence of toxic productivity in our society is a huge catalyst to one of the most critical issues we face—our deep-seated conditioning to equate worth with productivity & to sacrifice our mental health and well-being for “The American Dream”. This conditioning runs so deeply because it’s heavily promoted in our culture, leading many of us to internalize the belief that our value is tied to how much we achieve, how much money we make and how flawlessly we perform. Untangling this conditioning, especially around perfectionism and toxic productivity, is immensely impactful for our mental well-being and overall health. Personally, I found that confronting and dismantling my own conditioning in these areas was one of the most transformative steps I took toward my health, happiness and well-being. It allowed me to redefine success on my terms and embrace a more balanced and fulfilling approach to life. For me, time & rest has become my currency. Once you break this conditioning down, depending on how ingrained it is within you, you may come to a point, like I did - where you CANNOT believe how brain washed you once were around productivity and how much self harm you inflicted on yourself to “perform”. I used to be someone who *needed* to post every week, multiple times a week. Because if I didn’t, I was being a “bad” “ig therapist”. I used to check instagram every day, multiple times a day, because I *needed* to be in the know; because I needed inspiration for new content; because I *needed* to be up date with everyone in my life. . And ever since my surgery, and probably even before, I’ve noticed that the things that once felt important and mandatory to me, have shifted. I’ve noticed that my capacity to constantly be on and engaged and give and give and give to people until I’m empty, doesn’t exist anymore. A lot of this has to do with post surgery complications and constantly living in survival mode/ having so little capacity in general. And, I think living in survival mode has also made me realize what is truly important to me, and what isn’t. . And when I get quiet and lean into myself, what’s important is rest. What’s important is self-care and ease and making sure I can breathe. What’s important is being present in my life and attending to what’s in front of me, rather than living vicariously through other people’s lives and consuming content that makes me feel like I need to be anywhere other than where I currently am. What’s important to me is slowing down. My connections with friends and family and people who make my heart feel less heavy. What’s important is joy, and these days, I don’t get to experience a lot of it, so I feel particularly protective of my time and capacity and energy. . I don’t know what I want my relationship with instagram to be moving forward, but once my internship is over and I have more space to breathe, I know I want to show up here in a way that is raw and honest and vulnerable and flexible, and honors my self-care and what feels important to *me* to share, rather than what will be “good” or “popular” or “consistent”. . Hoping you all can give yourselves permission to do less if and when you need to, to shift as your values shift, and to show up in ways that honor what you currently need, knowing that it’s all allowed to change as we grow and change 💌 . Our May Book recommendation is Women Who Work Too Much by Tamy Thomas. WiTCH founder Illyana found this on LinkedIn and picked it up for holiday and now can't stop talking about it. This book is a must read for all women in cyber security and tech especially those who are trying to do it all and where burnout as a badge of honour. This book talks about when productivity become toxic and breaking the cycle of burnout. Most impactful for Illyana was learning about how she works to her capability instead of capacity and not realising that her capability was much higher than her actual capacity. Life is busy right now. There are products to make. Clients to soothe. Markets to prepare for. Workshops to put together. And Audios to launch. It's a nice type of busy, full of nerves and excitement, but this type of busy can still push you to burnout. Which is why I am prioritising my health. Meaning I am not hanging out on social media much. Starting my mornings with my self-care rituals. Getting a good night's sleep And taking a pause during the day. I literally had to practice it myself yesterday afternoon. Taking a moment to give some joy to one of my favorite beings. What is it about taking some time to simply give that really actually fills our own cup? And why is it so damn difficult to put ourselves in that space every day? The day to day and to dos just bulldoze these moments most of the time. What if creating a fullfilled life is more about placing ourselves in the space to give freely rather than checking things off the to do list. Yet that drive of toxic productivity urges us to get things done. Get more done. And more. And then do those things again. But... Maybe these days with young kids are about accepting the mess. Maybe it's less reparenting and more rechilding. More play. More giving and being and less - a LOT less doing. I've been challenging myself to do less and be, but it's HARD. Let’s also normalize that making mistakes is not a reflection of your worth (like the spelling mistake I made above today) 👆🏼sometimes it just happens. The pervasive influence of toxic productivity in our society is a huge catalyst to one of the most critical issues we face—our deep-seated conditioning to equate worth with productivity & to sacrifice our mental health and well-being for “The American Dream”. This conditioning runs so deeply because it’s heavily promoted in our culture, leading many of us to internalize the belief that our value is tied to how much we achieve, how much money we make and how flawlessly we perform. Untangling this conditioning, especially around perfectionism and toxic productivity, is immensely impactful for our mental well-being and overall health. Personally, I found that confronting and dismantling my own conditioning in these areas was one of the most transformative steps I took toward my health, happiness and well-being. It allowed me to redefine success on my terms and embrace a more balanced and fulfilling approach to life. For me, time & rest has become my currency. Once you break this conditioning down, depending on how ingrained it is within you, you may come to a point, like I did - where you CANNOT believe how brain washed you once were around productivity and how much self harm you inflicted on yourself to “perform”. It's time to put an end to the madness. Here's how: 1. Define work boundaries: Whether you're managing a team or flying solo, make it clear when work starts and ends. By setting expectations around response times and encouraging your team to disconnect after hours, you'll create a healthier work environment for everyone. 2. Set realistic goals - Set SMART goals. SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound. Ditch the unrealistic expectations and focus on objectives that you can actually accomplish without burning out. 3. Build breaks into your schedule: Breaks aren't just for slacking off—they're essential for recharging your batteries. Schedule regular breaks throughout your day to ensure you're giving yourself the downtime you need to perform at your best. 4. Do nothing: Yes, you read that right. Sometimes, the best thing you can do for your productivity is to do absolutely nothing. Embrace being intentionally unproductive and give yourself permission to just be. 5.
