The Warm Hands of Ghosts ✨ This was the @thatbookishclub April pick, and I really enjoyed it! It was such an enchanting read - at points it was harrowing and painful, but the overall sense of hope really shone through for me. I love historical fiction, so I enjoyed that element of the book - and the magical realism mixed really well with the world war setting. I loved the writing style, it really drew you in and I definitely want to read more from this author. The way the realism of the First World War was woven with the mystery and magic of the fiddler worked really well. I loved Laura, she was my favourite, such a strong character and so determined. I also loved her relationships with the other characters in the book. I felt towards the end that I wanted more of an explanation of events, however I was content for the most part. If you are looking for history mixed with a supernatural element then this book is for you. All while building a relationship mainly with Cole at first, everything in Thea’s life is going wrong. She’s being left strange notes, her truck breaking down, getting extremely sick, and all things point to her crazy ex Gavin messing with her. I am completely shook! Nothing could have prepared me for this complete turn of events. I kept seeing other reviews saying the last twenty-five percent was crazy and I still was not ready for it! I went through thirty-two different emotions all within that time span. The characters were older in their early 30s, and I really liked that. It was very well written. The plot to spice ratio was a perfect amount. I don’t think I will ever NOT recommend this book from now on! His family have chosen Afi in order to distract him from another woman that they don’t approve of. I really enjoyed this book, I loved seeing Afi grow in confidence for her beliefs as to what a marriage should be, and to challenge both the parental and cultural expectations put on her. I felt anger on behalf of Afi as she came to realise that she was never going to win in the situation she found herself in, either with her husband or both of their families. I received my @illumicrate special edition copy of @lyraselene ‘s A Feather so Black yesterday. I was lucky enough to receive an eARC of this story a few months ago, which I requested because my book girlies @a.novel.or.three three and @daughteroffantasy gushed about. Thank you @orbitbooks_us for the arc! I loved so, so much about A Feather So Black. The prose is wonderful, the worldbuilding is immaculate, the story and lore were beautiful and haunting and sad and lovely. This story feels like Blackswan, but if the tension between light and dark, good and evil, was between two estranged sisters. Between the humans and the fairy. Between a mother and her daughter. Between your first love and your last. Book 18 of 2024 | Knife by Salman Rushdie 📚 This month I decided to treat myself to a brand-spanking new book because a) I’ve had the busiest month since becoming self-employed eighteen months ago and b) why the heck not? It’s something I rarely do and usually find myself reading books years beyond their publication and/or zeitgeist dates. I must admit, I know more about Rushdie through his A* casting in the cinematic classic, ‘Bridget Jones’ diary’ than I do his literary work. In recent years I downloaded ‘Midnight’s Children’ as an eBook and got so intimidated by it enormous page count (naturally even more inflated in eBook version) that I barely got beyond the past couple of pages. In spite of this, I feel I have always been vaguely aware of his work and person through the media and, of course, through the horrific attempt on his life that took place on the morning of August 12, 2022, believed to have been motivated by the fatwa ordered on his life by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini three decades earlier after the publication of Rushdie’s ‘The Satanic Verses’. The book is a memoir of sorts about Rushdie’s near-death experience and the journey of healing and recovery in its aftermath. It is searingly honest and immensely readable. The medical nature of a lot of the accounts reminded me of reading Oliver Sacks’ ‘A Leg to Stand on’ or Bauby’s ‘Diving Bell’ (the parallels of losing sight through the stitching of an eye could not be easily forgotten… particularly if you’re squeamish). As one chapter title suggests, the book, to me, seems to have been as much as Rushdie as it is for us, providing the closure that he may not have otherwise found. One passage reads as an imagined conversation between himself and his would-be murderer (now awaiting trial in the US) which feels like a bit of a distraction and sidestep from the rest of the book but, again, feels very much for the author. The passages in which he writes about the love for his family: his sister, his sons, and above all, his wife, Eliza (the poet and novelist Rachel Eliza Griffiths) , are what really made the book for me [cont. in comments]
Haven’t read a thing in 2 weeks and it was kinda freeing. I was feeling so much pressure (all from myself) to read as much as possible every month and to beat my yearly reading goal by June. I read 19 books in March…. 19!! In addition to ADHD and depression burnout it was an overwhelming battle that I lost. But I’ve regrouped and ready to take my time with reading. And being the highly strung, fiercely independent person that she is, Bel is determined to prove that Rachel is lying. As lies begin to unravel, will the Price family ever be the same again? At first, I struggled to warm to Bel but she did grow on me! I think I found her a bit moody to begin with, but she definitely did have reason to be! I grew to love our feisty, clever main character 😊 her relationship with Carter was just so cute as well! For me, this book really picked up in the last third. The drama, the excitement…it all really came to a head in the last 100 or so pages and I raced through them. I found some of the beginning a little bit slow but I appreciate the build needed to happen for the ending to be as shocking and sensational as it was. Lots of twists that I loved and didn’t see coming! Jeg er ramt så hårdt, at jeg næsten allerede kan kåre denne bog som årets fantasy for mig. Jeg hopper med på fan-toget og er glad for, at danske læsere nu kan nyde godt af den danske udgivelse fra @forlagetfalco . Historien starter i 1828, hvor den forældreløse Robin Swift, bliver taget under vingerne af den lidt mystiske professor Lovell. I årevis lærer Swift Latin, Oldgræsk og kinesisk, så han kan blive optaget i Babel, der er et oversætter universitet i Oxford. Swift bliver med tiden klar over, at der er en bagside af de gode gerninger for Hr. Lovell’s side og snart skal han vælge side : er han man Storbritannien eller Kina i kampen om sølv og opium. (Og sølv er ikke bare sølv - for en fantasy skrives ikke uden en god portion magi). Der er virkelig ikke noget at sige til, at denne bog blev kåret til bedste britiske bog i 2023, for den tager fantasy et nyt sted hen. Den kombinerer to genrer, som måske ikke virker gode for hinanden, men jeg følte mig fortryllet og underholdt, samtidig med at jeg lærte en masse. Jeg var fanget fra første side og selvom det er en tung basse på næsten 600 sider, så var den hurtigt slugt. Jeg elskede Robin og resten af persongalleriet - selv de mindre likeable typer. Elskede tempoet. Elskede universet. Elskede plottet. Jeg elskede alt! Til alle der vil læse en fantasy, der kan noget andet end alle de andre derude! I'm absolutely in love with my new Broken Binding Edition: The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch.
