@grazyna_stachowicz

Set in a world lush with Thai mythology, Buddhist concepts, and magic, The Last Phi Hunter is an action-packed standalone fantasy book that mainly follows Ex, the youngest Phi hunter who’s determined to make a name for himself by hunting the elusive Shar-Ala, a true demon of nightmares and madness, and to a lesser extent, Narissa, a phi seeking atonement so that she may be reborn as a human again ✨️ 👉🏻 Ex’s story is one we’re all familiar with: he comes across a (rather capable) damsel in distress while working on his main quest of slaying Shar-Ala, gets tangled up with whatever’s going on with her and ultimately, they get together. Tbh, despite liking the relationship between Ex and Arinya, I was also the least interested in their romance. It felt a little forced and cringe, especially since it feels more fueled by physical attraction than anything else 💀 👉🏻 I also felt that Ex’s part of the story was too convenient at times. Ie: the parts where Shar-Ala was involved. Ex has been hunting the true demon for 2 years, unable to find more than its footprint but just when he and Arinya are only given one day left to live by the swamp’s guardian, Shar-Ala finally shows up? I mean, sure, I had expected something like this to happen but not so quickly and easily. Plus, the ending of the book was too neat — satisfying, but still too neat 🫠 👉🏻 Narissa’s story was intriguing and filled with emotion. After accidentally eating the only man she has ever loved, she sets out on a painful and difficult journey of redemption, hoping that by abstaining from eating humans and thus, starving herself for 30 years, she will be born again as human. She meets Ex and Arinya later in the story and I 💯 appreciate how her character (and Astrama’s) added a different dimension to the entire human VS monsters aspect of the story. 🌱 All in all, The Last Phi Hunter is a solid debut. I loved the representations here and can’t wait to read more of the author’s books! 3.5⭐ #bookreview Full review on blog, link in bio 💕 Thank you Dreamscape Media & #netgalley for this audiobook!

Last, Now, Next(ish) 📖Our House by Louise Candlish This may have taken me months to finish but it is not the books fault. It’s a very clever and at times complex plot with some great twists. Cosy fantasy isn’t normally my 🍵 but the healthy dashes of good weirdness, horror, satire and humour have made this reading experience 💯 enjoyable. Someone You Can Build a Nest In follows Shesheshen, the resident shapeshifter monster of Underlook who falls in love with a kind human girl named Homily. However, despite Homily reciprocating Shesheshen’s feelings, their romance is not an easy one because: 👉🏻 Homily is part of the intense, complicated, toxic and extreme Wulfyre family who has made it their duty to slay wyrms like Shesheshen because her kind has somehow ‘cursed’ their family. 👉🏻 No matter how well Shesheshen mimics and learns, at the end of the day, she’s no human and a relationship built on lies is not something she can vibe with — and heavens, there are a lot of lies from all sides that need to be dealt with first. So, what can a monster in love do but try her best anyway, amirite? Which, brings us this oddly lovable story that has humans VS monsters interwoven into everything, everywhere, all at once ✨️ Wiswell has done a brilliant job telling this story through the POV of a monster. It truly reads and feels alien, but as admirable as I find this (and as much as I enjoyed the other aspects of the story), I feel this has created a great emotional disconnect as well. I get that this is due to Shesheshen’s character and when she becomes more human in feeling and thinking, her narrative reflects that. However, the emotions in her narrative also stop coming to life after the climax and the story returns to this state of emotional disconnectivity. This could just be me, though, as I found the entire bit post-climax too neat. Nevertheless, I do appreciate the care Wiswell has in exploring different types of trauma, love, relationships and identity here 👌🏻 If romance between a human and monster paired with a direct, unflinching narrative (PS: this is a horror fantasy too) doesn’t give you the ick, I think you’ll enjoy Someone You Can Build a Nest In too. 4⭐ #bookreview Full review on blog, link in bio 💕 Thank you DAW ans Wunderkind PR for this review copy 💜

Gdy musisz walczyć o przetrwanie a najprymitywniejsze instynkty biorą górę nad rozsądkiem i uczuciami… 🐣 Miejcie wspaniałą sobotę i bez pośpiechu, wszystko się ogarnie 🧹 Współpraca reklamowa z @grazyna_stachowicz #grazynastachowicz #ksiazki #czytam #ınstabook #booklitty #22minuty #bookfeature #spursmaniak #takczytam #dekoracjewielkanocne #wielkasobota #idziewielkanoc #booksandcoffee #kawaiksiążka #lubieczytac #zdjeciedlaksiazki #featuredreads #zapowiedź #współpraca #terazczytam #thehubcoffee #lubiekawe #booktime📖 #czasdlaksiazki #czasdlasiebie #bookbook #czytanienieboli #czytambolubię

I didn’t particularly like The Tattoo Murder so I was hesitant to read The Noh Mask Murder. But, as I was suffering from 20th-century Japanese mystery withdrawals, I decided to go for it anyway and suffice to say, I enjoyed my second Akimitsu Takagi book more than the first 👌 👉🏻 The way the murder mystery unfolds is unconventional. There are so many twists and red herrings that if you’re not carefully reading between the lines, you’ll miss the clues. This was the case for me so when I reached the end, I was in awe at how clever everything was. The mystery was enthralling and the tragic elements of the story pulled my heartstrings. Though, I must admit that the writing was quite dry 😅 👉🏻 Twists and red herrings aside, the most unexpected thing about this book for me was actually the author’s self-insert 😂 It caught me off-guard and I had to reread the same passage twice just to be sure I was reading the actual story and not the author’s note. The usage of this literary device was interesting — a little cringe, but still interesting, especially considering how Koichi often describes Takagi in ways that aren’t flattering. 🌟 All in all, The Noh Mask Murder is a captivating and haunting locked-room murder mystery with elements of melodrama that add to an already tragic story where an entire family ends up dead within a brief period. 4⭐ #bookreview Review on blog, link in bio 💕 Thank you Pushkin Press and Netgalley for providing me this review copy!

One of the most unique murder mysteries I’ve ever read. There’s a lot going on in this book but somehow it all works together. It has a slow start but once the story really got going it was full speed ahead. Turton easily retains his spot as one of my favorite current mystery writers. I received a free ARC of this book from @NetGalley.

I've found much joy in the rise in translated historical Japanese mystery books as I've discovered different authors to read. The Meiji Guillotine Murders is my first Futaro Yamada book but sadly, this one’s a miss for me 🥹 The thing about historical Japanese mystery books is that they can get quite dry at times — especially since writing to tell is more often utilised than writing to show. Nevertheless, I’ve never really felt the dryness of reading such writing style until this book. There was just too much info relayed in the most straightforward manner and in chunks after chunks. It got better the further I was in the book, but that initial part was really a chore to go over 🫠 👉🏻 It also didn’t help that this reads more like historical fiction > a murder mystery. The historical & political aspects are far greater than expected. On one hand, I found the context intriguing and meaningful. On the other, this contributed to the strong historical fiction vibes which I’m not a fan of. If you’re like me who doesn’t enjoy historical fiction on its own, then this might make it difficult for you to keep your attention from wandering away from the story too. 👉🏻 I did like the philosophical elements and symbolism. The titular guillotine and accompanying executioner serve as part of the more prominent symbols of Westernization in this book, which I find intriguing. 👉🏻 I also liked that the chapters were more akin to a series of short stories that are ultimately linked together by the final chapter. It was an interesting, different approach, though this came with the downside of many of the characters being no more than just plot devices. 🌟 As a *historical* mystery set in mid-19th century Japan during a period of turmoil where enormous changes in the country’s political and social structure were taking place, this book's not your usual whodunit and does more oft feel like the casebook of two rivals. If that's something you find refreshing, then I believe you'll enjoy this more than I did. 2⭐ #bookreview Full review on blog, link in bio 💕 Thank you Pushkin Press and Netgalley for providing me this review copy!

I stepped into this book with no expectations (I know, silly me) and came out devasted by how much of a 💯 stunner it is. From lush imagery & rich worldbuilding to a tense murder mystery that keeps the pages turning, there is so much to gush about when it comes to The Tainted Cup and if I had a stronger lyrical bone in my body, I would write an ode to it ✒️ What I loved about this book is not limited to just the above points: 💜 the seamless blend between mystery and fantasy — how everything felt different yet familiar at the same time. It was both comforting and refreshing to experience the common elements of a murder mystery book in such fantastical ways. Moreover, the presence of enormous leviathans that are both boon and bane to the world brings to mind Attack on Titan, Pacific Rim, etc. So, if you like those, this book would definitely tickle your fancy. X2 if you love murder mysteries. 💜 the neurodivergent characters, the Holmes & Watson-style detective duo that’ll, without fail, make you tender-hearted. In a world where people can readily augment themselves in so many different ways just so they’re perfect for specific tasks to keep the Empire functioning, the characters here are still faced with their own relatable trials and tribulations. 👉🏻 Their struggles add a new layer of depth to the story as no longer is it simply about human survival against monsters, but also human survival within systems where power makes little allowance for differences that don’t benefit those holding the reigns. It's a complex world filled with many moments that impressively come to a circle — a compelling, multilayered book that resonates and echoes events that have happened in our reality. I cannot wait to see where the next book in this series will bring us. 5⭐ #bookreview Full review on blog, link in bio 💕 Thank you Hodder & Stoughton and #netgalley for this ARC! As I searched for different poets to explore, I chanced upon Carol Ann Duffy’s 2nd collection of poems so after falling in love with the first poem in Selling Manhattan, I bought the book and went home to read the rest in comfort. Sadly, this entire collection may have been the wrong one for me to start with 🥹 👉🏻 Selling Manhattan mainly explores emotions of yearning, love and protest through free verse that feels more experimental than concrete — and that’s the most I could glean from this collection. Although I could appreciate the cleverness of the poems, 90% still went over my head. Typically, when this happens, I switch my focus to the rhythm of the poems because that’s something I always enjoy, whether I understood the poem or not. But again, sadly, strong rhythms are not what Duffy’s poems here are armed to the teeth with. 👉🏻 The only thing I could do while reading this collection was to try harder to understand them and their intended, implied and/or underlying meanings. I ended up having to Google so much made it difficult to fully immerse myself in the poems and feel the emotions they hold. Of course, this is no fault of the poet’s. I just wasn’t equipped with the right contexts to fully appreciate the meanings Duffy’s poems hold here. ✨️ Nevertheless, the few poems I understood did stir my heart and they are: – Practising Being Dead – Yes, Officer – Foreign – Warming Her Pearls – Plainsong 1.5⭐ #bookreview Full review on blog, link in bio 💕

I was 💯 excited to read this since many of the H&S titles I read have been utter delights. Sadly, this streak is now broken by The City of Stardust 🫠 Although it has a very intriguing premise and a fascinating magic system, the execution is lacking. For a standalone, too many aspects of the world-building are left unexplained. Often, the imagery brought the world to life only to retreat and let the too-detailed actions/convos take centre stage. 👉🏻 There’s a strong lack of urgency despite the literal deadline❗️ The 1st part of the book is set when Violet was kept in the dark and tbh, I don’t see the necessity of this because much of the info could’ve been interwoven elsewhere. The pace picks up in the 2nd part, but it isn’t ideal because there's only 3 months left before the deadline and that’s a BIG difference from the 1st part’s meandering 10 years. Even worse? As the story progresses, the pacing gets clumsier ➕️ the plot convenience gets more and more obvious. Violet wastes a lot of precious time doing unexplained things 🙃 👉🏻 Staying interested in the story whenever the focus was on Violet was a struggle 💀 I love that she’s a bibliophile and I found her inner and outer struggles well expanded. But, she’s just so dull, so painfully naive and fragile despite receiving the all-powerful MC Buff that I irrevocably felt that Penelope and Aleksander hard carried the book. Both of them created much-needed tension and moved the plot forward whereas Violet’s simply being led by the plot. 👉🏻 The romance felt too tryhard at convincing that it isn’t underdeveloped, particularly when shown through Violet’s POV. 👉🏻 All the characters suffer from weak characterisation at varying extents. The many side characters weren’t even memorable and it was hard to keep track of them. 👉🏻 While I normally appreciate things coming to a full circle, the last two parts of the book make everything that came before it feel convoluted 🫠 ✨️ All in all, The City of Stardust has SO much promise that it’s such a shame that it fell short. 2⭐ #bookreview Full review on blog, link in bio 💕 Thank you Hodder & Stoughton and Netgalley for this ARC!!

I saw an article the other day that used terms like “bookshelf wealth” and calling owning a large quantity of books as a “fad,” casting judgment that they are only being used as decor for “aesthetic purposes.” It honestly made me kind of mad & sad at the same time. Now, I have long since overflowed my bookshelves & need more shelf space, and am in the process of unhauling books I no longer want (*insert shameless “shop my @PangoBooks, link in bio” quip here*), but it gives me joy to literally be surrounded by books. Do I own plenty that I haven’t read yet, yes, but what’s it to anyone else whether buying and/or reading books is a hobby of mine? Of yours? What’s it to them how we decorate our shelves & where we display our books? Books, reading, is fundamental. It’s educational, entertaining, and emotional. It inspires imagination and creativity, allowing us to mentally visualize worlds beyond what we will ever see & experience. While I was struggling with my health last year due to cancer and post-treatment concerns, books helped. Fiction and nonfiction, audiobook and physical copy. Maybe I am a #bookaddict who is consciously creating a #personallibrary (holla to @BookOutlet for feeding this, hence most of these books). Is that being irresponsible (haha @booknerdalie 🤪) or just the life of a #bookworm? Regardless of the answer, I’m a #booklover and a reader. I will not stop reading and truthfully, I’m probably not going to stop buying books either. However, I do have some bookish resolutions for the year: ✨read 50+ books ✨prioritize netgalley/arcs & books I currently own ✨get to 80% netgalley feedback ✨limit book purchases (but really though…) ✨meet some booksta friends in-person ✨unhaul/sell 50+ books That being said, if you want to display your books aesthetically, go for it. If you want to read all the books you own and more, do so. If you want to do both, living your life as a reader with a collection of books surrounding you, that’s okay. Books are a worthy investment. If I’m considered “hip with the trend” of having books everywhere, well then it’s the first time in my life I’ve been considered cool. And maybe the critics and haters are just jealous.

Thoughtful, powerful and full of heart, Finding Phoebe follows the titular neurodivergent MC who: 👉🏻 learns to expand her comfort zone 👉🏻 navigates unexpected situations in high school, her family and her friendship 👉🏻 discovers that there’s more to who she is than initially thought of ✒️ “Phoebe, no one’s the person we think they are. People are far more complicated than that. We rarely see more than a small part of them.” 💬 The author wrote this book for his autistic daughter and you can see that it’s done with so much loving care because it’s felt clearly in the thoughtful portrayal of Phoebe’s autism. Being on the spectrum didn’t make Phoebe more or less. Sure, some things might be harder for her but others are easier. Ultimately, she’s her own person and that’s all that really matters 💜 I really liked Phoebe’s friendship with Bethany. Through all the ups and downs, both girls were there for each other. Sure, they might disagree and argue with each other here and there, but they also communicate and make amends with each other. Sames goes to Phoebe and her relationship with her family. It’s so refreshing to have characters actually communicating with each other to fix problems 💯 Other than that, this book also touches on topics like teen pregnancy and spiritual faith. Tbh, there’s a LOT going on in just 336 pages and it can feel too much at times despite how all these things happening realistically makes sense timeline-wise. Nevertheless, this book is one I will recommend to everyone who’d like to broaden and diversify their reading scope. It’s perfect for young adults and older from different walks of life 🙆🏻‍♀️ 4⭐ #bookreview Full review on blog, link in bio 💕 Thank you @definitelybooks #pansing for this review copy! Before she was the ruthless Queen of Hearts, Catherine was a sheltered, young noblewoman who dreamed of opening her own bakery with her best friend, a maid who has always been by her side. She dreamed of marrying for love, not for duty. But, reality is never as dreamed yet that doesn’t stop Catherine from trying. She finds ways to open her bakery, loves a man she shouldn’t and ya'll, the forbidden romance is so sweet, so swoon-worthy — even I, who can’t read YA romance without cringing, found myself being swept along 🥹 Jest 🃏 is one of the better (if not the best) fictional love interests out there. His many ✅️ include being dashing, brave, kind, attentive, understanding and fun. The only con I can think of? Loving Catherine through a fool’s rose-tinted glasses 🙃 As much as I understand Catherine’s characterisation and actions, I can’t help being frustrated by her naivety spinelessness and stubbornness too. She’s the epitome of the fine line between heroic and foolish. She’s constantly saved by others and can’t really stand up for herself. She’s so, so exasperating to read because, at the same time, I can’t fault her as she’s merely the result of her upbringing and surroundings 🫠 Hence why I find it a shame that everyone has to suffer the consequences of Catherine’s many choices, be it as the sweet young noblewoman or as the ruthless Queen of Hearts. (Tho, the path she chose is arguably, preordained by fate.) Characters aside, I 💜 the way Meyer brought Wonderland to life. The imagery is gorgeous, plus the overall execution had just the right amount of Alice in Wonderland-ness to it 👌🏻💯 It’s not as zany as the original tale but that’s fine. It’s a story inspired by the classic, after all. ✨️ All in all, Heartless has the right balance of whimsical, historical fantasy, forbidden romance and prophecy. Whether you’re a fan of the original Alice in Wonderland or not, as long as those three aspects tickle your fancy, this is a book you’ll want to read! 4⭐ #bookreview Full review on blog, link in bio 💕

This book isn’t your standard murder mystery. There’s a lot of interjections from the author about the history of the genre. Unfortunately this meant the author spent a lot of time trying to prove to the reader that he’s really clever when in reality it just made him look smug. It also had the most aggravating ending of any mystery I’ve ever read. Despite all that it was still generally enjoyable so I give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

When your loved one dies unexpectedly from a drug overdose at a high school party, what would you do? In Hannah’s case, she mourns, she grieves, gets angry. She tires from the cycle yet continues on, hunting for the truth because she knows Sophie, she knows. (But alas, it was only one Sophie whom she knew — this truth, she learns along the way.) Anyway, as interesting as the plot was, it developed too slowly 🫠 Yes, I liked: ✅️ the dual timeline that allowed for explorations of grief & coping mechanisms via various characters ✅️ that Hannah isn’t a sweet, likeable character ✅️ the friendships, how they developed & changed ✅️ the romance wasn’t rushed ❗️But❗️ It felt like the relationships were taking up more attention than should’ve because the whole point of the book is for Hannah to navigate her grief and find out the truth behind Sophie’s death. Sure, both the pace and the focus may be practical (because lbr, it’d take just as long or longer if we were in Hannah’s shoes 🙃). However, in a book, I’d personally prefer for there to be more tension and anxiety. For Hannah to have more moments to herself, and for her to feel as though she’s racing against time even though the story isn’t about stopping an active murderer. This would also make sense since Hannah obsesses greatly over uncovering the truth as a way to cope with Sophie’s death. 🌱 All the 👆🏻 aside, I do think All That’s Left to Say is a solid read with a realistic (albeit anticlimactic) ending. It’s another important book that could help with bettering the understanding and generating awareness and conversations on substance abuse. 3⭐ #bookreview Full review on blog, link in bio 💕 Thank you @definitelybooks #pansing for this review copy! Będzie mrocznie, krwisto a w oddali słychać wołanie matek o sprawiedliwość. @m.smielak @skarpawarszawska #michałśmielak #wydawnictwoskarpawarszawska #skarpawarszawska #takczytam #idziezima #igreads #mybookfeatures #osada #spursmaniak #kryminał #crimenovel #karkonosze

Sposób, w jaki rozwija się historia, daje wystarczająco dużo wskazówek, aby poskładać w całość wszystkie puzzle i odkryć prawdziwego mordercę nim zrobi to nasza para detektywów. @wydawnictwomando #wydawnictwomando #takczytam #spursmaniak #merrynallingham #literaturaklasyczna #crimenovel #igreads #ksiazki #czytam #bookmorning #klasykakryminału #facetczyta #22minuty #instaksiążka #bookcommunity #bookcoverdesign #bookstagramm #czytambolubię #czytambochcę #booksbooksbooks #lovebook #morderstwowzimowydzień #tv_lifestyle #booklitty #gf_stilllife #stilness #9vaga_stillife9 #kryminał #oczytanyfacet #bookshelves

Ta misja nieoczekiwanie prowadzi go w niebezpieczne rejony zagrażającego światu spisku. My rating is an average of two separate feelings about this book. Five stars for the narration & humor and three stars for the actual mystery. I enjoyed this book but found the central mystery uninteresting. It made it take a lot longer for me to get through the book than it should have. Despite that, I’m still looking forward to reading the next book in this series. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

„Morderstwo w księgarni” autorki Merryn Allingham to książka w klimacie kryminałów Agaty Christie, osadzona w Anglii w 1955 roku. Tylko coś im słabo iskrzyło by go rozpalić, choć chęci były. Sami bohaterowie byli mało wyraziści i mało ciekawi. @wydawnictwomando @merrynallingham

A captivating and vivid reimagining of Chinese history during which the only legitimate female Emperor Wu Zetian ruled, The Scarlet Alchemist is a new addition to a growing and much-loved subgenre that needs to be read 🙆🏻‍♀️ Zilan is 1/2 Chinese 1/2 wailao. She's without a mother and father but is much loved by her aunt, uncle and two cousins. Together, they run a mingqi business which, despite death being a daily occurrence, isn’t doing well. The poor are too poor to buy mingqi for their deceased loved ones while the rich are too scared of death to die so they resort to eating life gold. Nevertheless, an extended life doesn’t mean that one can’t die so what do the rich do when they die? Why, they go to a backwater village, walk through the part of the neighbourhood even the villagers themselves turn their noses up at, and find Zilan who has the exact ability they need 😶 Ressurecting the dead breaks all sorts of laws, but for Zilan, it’s a means of survival. The gold paid can bring rice to their table, improve the health of her ailing aunt & uncle and allow Zilan & her cousins to travel to the capital for the imperial exams that can better their lives (should they pass both the exams and the political games that are undoubtedly there). So, Zilan’s willingness to go against everything for her and her loved ones’ sake? That’s admirable 💯 I 💜 how she braves her fears and takes on the challenges with cleverness and viciousness. She may come off as rude/selfish, but I think it makes her complex and more relatable. Also 💜 that Prince Li Hong is more lighthearted in contrast to Zilan. He isn’t as strong, smart or brave, but he’s sweet, loves his 🦆 dearly and provides the story with seamlessly integrated touches of humour. Tho, the romance between the two felt unbalanced as it’s clear that Li Hong likes Zilan more so this makes all the romantic parts feel out of the blue. Anyway, if all 👆🏻 isn’t enough of a win for you, consider the following ✅️: undead made of gems, stunning twists & turns, and fast-paced action. (Yes, you need to read this ASAP❗️) 4⭐ #bookreview Full review on blog 💕 Thanks Hodder & Stoughton and Netgalley for the ARC!

“The Blue Mansion. The Decagon House. And now the Mill House. First Nakamura Seiji dies in the Blue Mansion, and then almost immediately afterwards, Kōjin gets involved in all of this… When I learned that Kōjin had disappeared, from another of Seiji’s houses of all places, I felt a cold chill run down my spine” 📖💬 An improvement from The Decagon House Murders, the first book in the House Murders standalone series which was more an ode to orthodox mystery fiction, The Mill House Murders is a classic murder mystery interwoven with elements of a dark fairy tale 🥀 👉🏻 It features an eccentric cast of characters, ranging from the reclusive son of a famous artist who has worn a rubber mask ever since a car accident left him disfigured; his much younger and beautiful wife; a small group of yearly visitors — all whom covet the reclusive son’s collection of his father’s paintings; and more. Nevertheless, despite The Mill House Murders being the better Yukito Ayatsuji book of the two, this one also has flat characters that are here just to progress the whodunnit game 🫠 Again, though I guessed the real culprit early on, the way the crime was carried out in this book still piqued my interest. I enjoyed the twists and turns, and thought the one at the end was a clever touch since it added a fantastical element to the story 🙌🏻 ✨️ Like with the first book, I don’t recommend The Mill House Murders for those seeking depth or complex characters. Instead, if you’re looking to play a whodunnit game in the form of a book, this could capture your interest 👌🏻 4⭐ #bookreview Full review on blog, link in bio 💕

🎧 Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney Dysfunctional family ✅ Trapped in a house ✅ Murder in every direction ✅ Flash backs to the past ✅ Array of characters ✅ Shocking twists and revelations ✅ I think this is my favourite book of the year. Just wow!! Alice Feeney is fast becoming an auto buy author. It’s was super fun Halloween read 🎃 I’ve seen mixed reviews about this one, I think if you are open to enjoying a book based on fiction and that anything is possible then it’s for you. I think it has similarly split reviews like Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough. Meet the book that has possibly shattered my hope of meeting my reading goal this year. This 650-page behemoth felt twice as long. It shifts perspectives so there were so parts that I loved & others that took forever to get through (why no punctuation?!). It also had a very, very abrupt ending that I didn’t like at all. The good parts & bad parts average out to ⭐️⭐️⭐️. #whatjoreads

📖This is Going to Hurt by Adam Kay With little to no knowledge of what a Doctors career entails I was intrigued to read this one. I had mixed emotions about it to begin with. I found it hard to laugh along to the jokes scattered though each diary entry. A lot of shocking revelations about why half the people in an emergency waiting room are there 😳 and the outrageous working conditions of our a doctors (and I’m sure other medical staff). By the end I understood the jokes are a coping mechanism, the saying if you don’t laugh, you’ll cry comes to mind. Crazy hours, understaffed and underpaid but give their all to serve others anyway. A huge thank you to NHS staff and anyone in this field around the world. Before the Coffee gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi In the heart of Tokyo lies a cafe. Legend has it that this cafe has the ability to send people back in time. There are a few rules to follow though. Stay in your chair and return before your coffee gets cold. This sounded like such a lovely plot and in some ways it was. However the focus was majorly on the relationships between the characters in the present rather than the time travel. The books and chapters were not long enough for an emotional connection. One thing that stuck with me was - given the chance to relive the past the characters could still not say what they so desperately wished they had the first time round. It got me thinking of what moments in time I wish I could return to and if I’d be able to say what I really wanted to say. For me I’d want to share one more cuppa with my mum and to tell her thank you, I love you and I know she lived for us. Do you have any time travel book recommendations? “It has been said that books find their own readers but sometimes they need someone to show them the way.” 📖 Synopsis :swipe next 👉🏻 📝 #nadianiabookreview Another heartwarming story of #booksaboutbooks 🫶🏻📖. After I finished reading ‘Days at The Morisaki Bookshop’ , this book been recommended at the end of that book. Surprisingly, at that time, I’m also currently reading this one😍 Carl’s character portrayed well who always happy working as a bookseller and delivering books to his special customers. As a book lover, ah~~ I easily clicked to him as his life surrounded with books, bookshops , his friendship & even the reading vibes and his house. There’s one part that I feel interesting when Carl divided readers into hares, tortoise and fish 😁 . It is totally fascinating to read🫶🏻. When Schascha comes into Carl’s story. The plot become funny, interesting and charming. I loves her cute & adorable characters 😍😁. The friendship between her & Carl progress pleasantly. Totally makes me giggle most of the time especially Schascha😁 . Other than that, the supporting characters , mostly Carl’s customers. Their story also bring enjoyment as they are readers & book lovers too. When it comes to #booksaboutbooks , of course, the main thing that would makes a book lover feel attached are the quotes related to books. 🫶🏻❤️ Along those joys with books, it is good as the author touch a little bit about domestic abuse , loneliness , trauma and grief theme. I feel that their backstory could bring awareness and it is nice that through books they find solace 🫶🏻. Everything just beautiful written. However, towards the end of the story. Suddenly, it become flat and abrupt. In spite of that, I still adore this book as it tells the power of books, whereby, books can unite people from all ages , alongside with the importance of being kind and have empathy. All in all, this charming , beautiful and meaningful short story should be read if you are into #booksaboutbooks theme. 😁🫶🏻 Thank you @putrifariza and @times.reads for this adorable book. Really appreciate it. 🫶🏻 #trulybynia #booklitty #flatlaysbynia #thedoortodoorbookstore #carstenhenn

…. and relax I finished Before the Coffee gets Cold yesterday. It was ok, gave me a lot to think about. It was a little triggering as a character had the same illness my mum had which is never easy to stumble across and a reason I mostly read thrillers… Anywho, I’m giving myself until my coffee gets cold to read and then I must get on with a few bits before my little one wakes up from his nap. 🎧 Good Bad Girl by Alice Feeney I enjoyed this book but I’m not sure why 🤔 Unlikeable, selfish and negative characters - but I couldn’t stop listening. Is there something wrong with me? 😆 The story line was very addictive and I loved how everything and everyone connected to the plot with twist after twist. It was a messy wild ride with a neat and tidy finish that kept me thinking. Hola amores! #loquerecuerdodeti #bookedit #readallthebooks #booked #bookreader #readersofinstagram #ilovebooks #bookstagramespaña #bookstagrammer #booklitty #librosrecomendados #librosymaslibros #librosycafe

For me, the timeline goes back and forth between 9 years ago ( took place in Oxford, England ) and present day ( took place in New York ) was nicely done . How the friendship of Jane and Thalia started , the obsession and toxic friendship comes along until a murder happened that break them apart . All those twisted yet it will gives us understanding more as a whole. Every characters really annoying and disturbing. Literally, everyone. 😡🤦🏻‍♀️. Even though they makes me tensed . However, each of their roles played nicely. The most part that I feel the author done well, whereby, in the storyline, issues about APD ( antisocial personality disorder ) , the difference between APD and anxiety disorder as well as avoid from self-diagnosed could give awareness to all of us. In addition, she’s layering the dark side of publishing world is intriguing. Overall , I enjoyed this book even the plot quite intense, twisted with complex female characters. If you are into dark academia thriller you might check this book out. "No matter where you go, or how many books you read, you still know nothing, you haven't seen anything. And that's life. We live our lives trying to find our way.” #nadianiabookreview This is a charming ,comforting and heartwarming read.🫶🏻❤️ Takako a women who is going through breakup, complexity and struggle trying to figure out the purpose of her life, finding a way towards her Uncle Satoru Bookshop - The Morisaki Bookshop situated in Jimbocho, Tokyo . While staying there and helping him. She gather her strength back and discover about herself , love and family. Eventhough, main place of the storyline is in the bookshop. It is such a pleasant get to read a story that told us through book we could find solace and reading is healing. 🫶🏻❤️ I really adore conversation between Takako and her uncle Satoru , whereby, it conveyed so many lesson learn and reminders for life. Through Takako character it may resonate us in some ways. Generally, when it comes to the tales featuring Circe, half include Skylla as her rival while half don’t mention Skylla at all — and in the ones that do have Skylla, Circe enacts revenge on her for being the recipient of her love target’s affections. It’s very much your usual women of Greek legends fighting each other for the attention of or under the whims of men, but this retelling of Circe’s story is different 👌🏻💯 👉🏻 An Unexpected Ally gives us a refreshing take where Circe is a stronger, more independent and wiser enchantress who becomes an ally to Skylla instead of a rival. I really enjoyed how their friendship played out and adored that Circe is more prone to examining the behaviours and motivations of herself and others 💜 This gave her a more level-headed image, though she does still have her vices which fans of Greek mythology will be familiar with. However, as much as I liked the story, I found the writing too straightforward and distant 😥 It felt much like a series of events being told, instead of a story we experience alongside Circe. This weakened the impact of the story and made everything fall flat, which I find a great shame because it is truly an intriguing retelling with compelling interpretations of the characters. ✨️ Nevertheless, An Unexpected Ally is still an enjoyable read. If you’re a fan of Greek mythology and want to read a retelling that’s different from the usual, definitely give this one a try! 3⭐ #bookreview Review also on blog, link in bio 💕 Thank you @booksforwardpr for this review copy! My latest book for #ReadingLianeMoriarty. I liked this one a lot, it’s just unfortunate that I saw the miniseries first, which removed all the tension. That being said, I was still completely sucked in & didn’t want to stop reading. I do think it was a little long for this kind of book & could’ve been cut down some. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Dane has been acting weird for months, but because he moved in with his girlfriend Maura, Holly hasn’t truly witnessed how far her brother has deteriorated until it’s much too late to save him. However, Dane’s death is too unusual to be anything as straightforward as what the police have determined as suicide by psychosis. After all, Holly has his last messages talking about a game Maura wants to play and that he needs something out of him — something he’s desperate enough to remove by cleaving himself open. So, determined to learn the truth, Holly stalks Maura, moves in with her and plays a dangerous game where lives are at stake 😶 👉🏻 Told in a gripping, dark and unflinching manner, Such Pretty Flowers is a bizarre read that kept me turning the pages. Like Holly, I couldn’t help but be drawn in by Maura. She’s eccentric and creepy, but also magnetic and beautiful. Sometimes, she appears delicate and fragile. Others, she’s powerful and dangerous. Tbh, there were moments when I thought the story would’ve been amazing had it been told in Maura’s POV. She’s just ✨️that✨️ fascinating and I really wouldn’t mind reading a companion novel on her side of the story. 🕸 But, this doesn’t mean that the story being told in Holly’s POV is bad. Sure, there are times when her actions are frustrating because she acts like those typical characters who die first in horror movies, yet without this side of her, there wouldn’t have been the rest of the story. Moreover, without her dullness, I don’t think the psychological thriller aspect of this book would’ve been as strong too 🙊 👌🏻 Nevertheless, as suspenseful and intriguing as the book is, I think there’s a lot of missed potential with the setting, especially considering the history of Savannah and the eerie, atmospheric gothic horror vibes that are present but had little chance to shine and bring the entire impact of the book up a notch. It’s such a shame! 🥀 Still, Such Pretty Flowers is an engaging story that’s perfect for bringing one out of their reading slump. It’s fresh and strange enough to be devoured in one sitting. 3⭐ #bookreview Full review on blog, link in bio 💕

Back with a review after a long time 🌼 Rating: 🌟🌟🌟.5 THANKS TO NETGALLEY FOR THIS REVIEW COPY IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW. I’ve read Saadia’s work before and it is directed toward a certain demographic and it is fun to know that POV. The setting is similar to her other novels and the nature of MC too. Mahnoor is a second-generation immigrant. Family dynamics are typical, parents are so busy settling down and running in the race that they’ve been neglecting their kids. Kids are not really connected to their history or religion. Grandmother Rafia is a change, they might need in their life. Mahnoor is not forward to this change, a new person who is gonna join their family, and family dynamics will change forever, not only that, she is the designated babysitter of her dadi so she is grumpy. Once she started to spend time with Dadi and other people from her generation, Mahnoor got to know about Partition. I’ve never read any fiction author writing about partition (it’s the first time for me to read about that in English that too as a main theme). I am sure the majority of second-generation immigrants don’t know about it but I felt like the author underplayed a few things or it was a tame version as it was a middle grade. I’ve grown up reading and listening to stories of partition from my grandparents and their siblings so I felt like this version was more for the entire South Asian audience. All of Saadia’s MCs are young, hot-tempered, and kind of spoiled, with time they make everything hard for them. From school life to home, they mess up everything. By the end, they go through severe character development. I am getting kind of bored of this. I hope I’ll get to read a bit different content in her next book. I enjoyed this book a lot but I felt these certain things. #talebyfizah #bookstababes #bookstablogger #ɪɴsᴛᴀᴘɪᴄ #flatlaystyle #bookcommuntiy #booklit #booklitty #ireadculture #ireadalot #bookstagramcommunity #bookreading

Q: Any of your favourite book with pink cover that you like to recommend? 😊 #nadianiabookreview This book is a slice of life collections of short stories that grasped people-relationship : friends, mother , father & children , husband & wife . Even those stories been told in a quirky & funny way but some of it will make you feel empathetic. Among those 11 stories , these 6 stories catches my interest & lesson that we could take , quite relatable & reflective enough to us : 📖Damascus : A worrisome of a mother towards her child which reminded of her past. End up her worry reliefs her because she is just realised that her child is doing better than how she is in the past. Motherhood sometimes can turn a women into feeling uneasiness. 😭 📖Twist & Shout : A father who is accidentally thought that his hearing aid is a cashew and eat it. This story resonates how the child communicate, treat and take care of an aging parent would give lesson to us by being a good child before everything is too late. 🥺 📖Cobra : About a women who is in perimenopause phase and obsesses with “Marie Kondo”. Somehow it is quite informative get to know how perimenopause women handle during that phase . It also give a glimpse of how the husband and children should treated her and be an understanding person. 📖561 : Charlene thought she paid the price of infidelity. Her husband still feel needed to help her ex-wife, Barbara, whereby both of them met while working as a suicide hotline volunteers. As for this story, I found out it is really helpful if this hotline really could save people who is in despair for a long time . 📖Pandemic Behaviour: This is the most recent relatable story to all. The timeline during Covid-19 pandemic. It is really reminded us about fear & anxiety of that situation, lockdown, impulsive buying of foods & medicines , work from home and etc. The biggest lessons from the pandemic situation that all of us aware are appreciate every little bit that happen in our life, appreciate our loved one while we can, be helpful and be kind to others while we get a chance to do so. ***continue in the comment *** #gamesandrituals #katherineheiny #booklitty

Was introduced to this book owing to the excellent podcast by the author. It is hopeful yet sad, funny yet thoughtful. The author weaves his life through the essays about different items (among others Canada Geese, pandemics, orbital sunrise, Monopoly) which he gives a rating to. Though it was a little America-centric at times, it was a non fiction essay book I thoroughly enjoyed. #johngreen #theanthropocenereviewed . . . . . . . . . #smarkiesbookshelf #igreads #bookstagram #bookrecommendation #bookworm #bibliophile #readinglist #booklover #riotgrams #calligraphy #calligraphykl #calligraphyMY #handmadekl #quoteoftheday #oursharedshelf #met_createchange #bookishfeatures #imacalligrafile #calligrafile #culturetripbooks #booklitty #amreading #booksbooksbooks #bookshelf

As someone who loves historical Japanese mysteries, I was really looking forward to The Tattoo Murder by Akimitsu Takagi. But, sadly, it didn’t meet my expectations… 🫠 👉🏻 While I found the views on traditional Japanese tattoos, the intertwining Japanese folklore and the historical contexts of the setting interesting, they also took over too much of the book. Many times, it felt as though the murder mystery was placed on the back burner just so those views could be further explored. This, in return, made the mystery too drawn out, resulting it in being incredibly underwhelming despite how clever the crime was. 👉🏻 The boy wonder mentioned in the summary entered the picture much too late. Instead of being present around the beginning and solving the mystery with us, he comes in only at the final 1/4 of the book which makes all the revelations too convenient. It felt like he was merely inserted just so a major plot point could be concluded. Ngl, the entire crime aspect felt like it was just there as an excuse to talk more about the art of traditional Japanese tattoos. 🥲 I think it’s such a shame because the crime itself is clever — a little predictable but still, clever. You have pieces of a gorgeous woman’s corpse found in a locked room. Her torso is missing and it’s the exact location of her equally gorgeous Orochimaru 🐍 tattoo which she had only just revealed to a crowd of spectators days ago. There are several suspects but instead of a tense race to unveil the truth before the next victim appears, we end up with an incredibly slow and cumbersome investigation. Sure, this may mimic reality where not all cases can be solved and closed quickly but I think in a book, there should be a little leeway for the pace to be sped up so that the story becomes less exhausting and more of a page-turner 😶 ✨️ All things considered, The Tattoo Murder reads more like a historical fiction with a side of crime than a thriller mystery set in 1947 Japan. It’d be best to read this with the expectation that it’s more focused on the beauty of traditional Japanese tattoos instead of the murder mystery. 2⭐ #bookreview Full review on blog, link in bio 💕

Q: Most of the time, do you prefer series or standalones? #nadianiabookreview The story is about Aisling Cooley a single Mom who raising two sons , Ethan & Finn . They’re really mean everything to her. Then , there’s murder happened involved 2 women. While detective Jonah Sheens investigating about the murder. Aisling who desperate want to know about her past, parents and herself upload her DNA to ancestry website which turn up her DNA match with the current crime scene related with serial killer known as “The Bonfire Killer”. Now, in the police record. The suspect would be one of her family member - either Ethan , Finn or her long lost father. Question is , she would do anything for her family but will she protect a murderer? I was intrigued to read this one because of the title and synopsis. I did not know that this is a series . No wonder, at the beginning , I feel meh~ eventhough it is a mystery crime book. However, as the pace starting to catch up. I felt , the book not that bad to be read as standalone. As the mystery goes, Aisling’s secret one by one been revealed until she found out a hidden secret that even her parents did not tell. Due to this , I keep on reading until the end as I eager to know who is the real killer. Fuh~~ I am really glad , there are unexpected plot twist and turn which leads me into different guesses and conclusion. Honestly, I don’t focus much on Jonah Sheens teamwork in solving the mysterh but I am more intrigued towards Aisling story. Other than that, I like how the relationship between Aisling with her 2 sons - Ethan and Finn. Seriously, they’re good sons who always being there and supportive for Aisling even after they found out about Aisling secret. After all, I feel this book is just an okay read for me as I rarely read a detective crime mystery series. If there’s no plot twist , I think I nearly DNF it. 🙈 . So, if you are into detective crime mystery kind of plot. Maybe this book is for you. TW : child abuse , teen pregnancy , abduction , postpartum depression, force adoption . “I have experienced others' pain and I've experienced my own.” #nadianiabookreview Its been a long time I ever read Cecelia Ahern book. Oh my, this book really captivating from the start and the ending is just beautiful. The story follows Alice who can “sees the worst in people & she also sees the best “. At first , I thought she is ‘color blind’ . But, Alice really ‘special’ in a way that she could see emotions of people through colors all the times. Her ‘specialty’ known as “Synesthesia” . Due to this, I intrigued to know in depth about it. It is nice get to know something new. Alice come from dysfunctional family , whereby, her mother is mentally sick & her little brother,Ollie is a problematic. They never understand Alice at all. They think Alice is a freak and her ‘specialty’ is a curse. Despite of that, the only person in her family that always being supportive and understand her is Hugh, Alice’s eldest brother. Hugh the only one think her ‘specialty’ is a gift. ❤️ Use of colors for each chapter is brilliantly done as it portrayed Alice life journey, character development and changes.I really immersed in what Alice went through which every emotions really felt real. Throughout her, it will bring you see a different scenarios of people which will make us appreciate what life are. My most favourite chapters are - rose gold & white, whereby it related to happiness & sorrow moments. Hence, these 2 chapters turn me into relieveness and makes me cried . Gladly everything is in place nicely. All in all, this book such a unique, unforgettable ,despairing, insightful & beautiful at the same time that some parts are relatable to us too. Indeed, as the cover written - “ we all see the world in a thousand different ways” , this book will impressively makes you stay from cover to cover.🫶🏻 **other TW / topics mentioned in this book : bipolar disorder , drugs , autism , dysfunctional family, abandonment , bullying .
