It’s funny, in the pictures it doesn’t look like much at all, yet planting and transplanting, I feel like the seedlings are endless. Everything is grown at home tucked into nooks and crannies where I can find space. It’s not a perfect system, but I work with what I’ve got. When I can start moving plants outside, I feel like all parties involved are much happier. These are all my hot crops and flowers. Each one is started from seed, and awaits the day the threat of frost passes (in a most impatient manner). I’ve started to harden them off, bringing them outside in order to acclimate to the changing temps and variable weather patterns. If the night temps are warm enough, I leave them out. The seedling hardening off adventure! These have been in and out for a couple hours at a time, then out for 10+ hours for the last 2 days. Still putting in the shade of our Japanese maple, but as you can see here, the sun does peek in and moves throughout the day. I think today is the day we leave the seedlings out overnight, as our nighttime temps are now above 50F going forward. Freaks me out a little bit but I think it will be fine! No judgement, so let's get something going and work together on this. @shifting_roots posted a video about using frost cloth (row cover) to acclimatize your seedlings to sunlight. This process can be time consuming and stressful. I put my mini greenhouse frame on its side and put the row cover on top, tucking most of it down but leaving the ends open for airflow. I put a little thermometer inside to get an idea of how hot it could get. We've already reached temperatures of 30C/86F here in the southern interior of BC so it can get quite hot under the row cover and the seedlings still need attention. I use 50 degrees as my minimum temperature for planting out summer vegetables. These have been hardening off for the past week. May 11th is the average date temps stop going below 50 at night in my area. Of course the night before the 11th temps go down into the mid forties lol. Back in the fifties by 8am and then these are all going back outside and into my beds. It may dip down to 48/49 in the next week but briefly enough I feel safe. These little babies got to go outside today!! I am officially less than 2 weeks from the last frost date in my area (it’s usually Mother’s Day weekend but we just had a cold storm blow through). I now get to do my least favorite part of gardening: hardening off. I think the reason I dislike hardening off is mostly that I just want to get these in the ground and start growing these bad boys! I was not super great at watering my starts when they were really young (and needed it the most) so I lost all my basil starts but I’m going to start more and hope for the best this year!

Watch the weather closely. Tomatoes grow best at daytime temperatures of 70°F–75°F and nighttime temperatures of 60°F–65°F. Nighttime temperatures below 50°F will damage plants. Remember to harden off by placing plants outside for a few hours each day and gradually increase the time they are out over the next week (bring inside if night time temps will drop below the 50s). Water plants well before transplanting.
