THE DEAD ZONE by Stephen King (1979) The next book in my King pub order readthrough was supposed to be The Stand, but I've decided to wait until I get to the extended edition from 1990. After that was supposed to be The Long Walk (1978) but I reread it a few months ago so I'm skipping it. It's one my favourites by King and if you haven't read it yet, you definitely should. Which brings us to The Dead Zone! This was my first time reading it and I really enjoyed it! Why is this one not talked about more?! Two of my favourite things that King does are character building and psychic powers. The Dead Zone has both these things so naturally, I loved it. All the characters were written and built up so well, especially Johnny. The plot was great and I didn't really know where things were going for most of the book (in a good way). And it actually had a good ending! King's books can be a miss in that aspect sometimes 😂 If you're a King newbie, I think The Dead Zone would be a great one to start with! It's not really a horror story - more of a psychological thriller. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 I need to watch the movie adaptation of Dead Zone - I've heard it's pretty good. Another King book down, this time it was The Dead Zone. Another fantastic entry into King’s vast body of work, this kept me on the edge of my seat awaiting to see what would happen next. While I feel the last few chapters felt a tad rushed, the ending did overall stick the landing for me. I really enjoyed this once i finally picked it off the shelf. It felt like a classic King book without the horror. A gripping thriller with a sci-fi edge if you will. Johnny is so likeable, all helped by his tragic situation. I was rooting for him right away and felt the emotion towards the end. There were some nasty characters in here too but were well written without drawing too much focus on their backstory. I only wish their conclusion wasn't wrapped up half way through. Yes it moved on to another shady character wanting to become president (foreshadowing much?) But I would have liked it to have been focused on more and not so quickly concluded. All in all a gripping thriller with some great moments. Thumbs up again Stephen King 👍 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Have you read this one? (1983) Dir. David Cronenberg Exceedingly chilling, thematically haunting, and anchored by an exceptional performance from Christopher Walken, The Dead Zone remains one of the strongest Stephen King adaptation's to date and another memorable film from David Cronenberg. If there's anyone who was the perfect fit to tackle a Stephen King story, it would obviously be David Cronenberg. With the insanely vast filmography of his, Cronenberg is literally a master of horror filmmaking and the science-fiction thriller genre. So, it should come as no surprise that The Dead Zone is an intensely unnerving and consistently engrossing ride from start to finish. It's filled with that Cronenberg atmosphere for sure. The story of course focuses on a school teach who miraculously survives a violent car accident only to wake up from a 5 year come, in which he discovers he has psychic powers. I can't help but think back to when South Park parodied did this film. In all seriousness though, The Dead Zone is a fascinatingly well-put together film that fulfils its source material thanks to a fantastic lead performance and sharp direction. It goes without saying that Christopher Walken gives a terrifically memorable performance. He's Christopher Freaking Walken! It's a dramatically subdued, but subtly powerful performance. You can feel his anguish and pain as he's cursed with these psychic powers and he loses the love of his life at the same time. Of course, we get a classic Walken moment when he yells, "The Ice is Gonna Break!". Martin Sheen, Brooke Adams, and Tom Skeritt also turn in solid work. Sheen hams it up with such a bastardly entertaining performance as the political candidate and main antagonist of the story. Cronenberg's mood and horror atmosphere oozes all throughout the film. I love the way that Johnny's abilities and visions are visually and emotionally portrayed throughout the movie. It's disturbing and brilliant at the same time. Overall, The Dead Zone comes highly recommended for both Cronenberg and King fans. Born in Bulgaria in 1911, Baba Vanga spent most of her life in the Kozhuh mountains and was renowned the world over for her prophetic predictions about the future. While a great deal of skepticism has always surrounded the accuracy of these predictions, many people remain adamant that she had successfully foretold a wide range of major global events. Even though she died back in 1996 at the age of 85, her predictions are still referenced and scrutinized for indications of what might come to pass in the near future. There are some, in fact, who believe that her predictions for 2024 may have already come true. Among these was the suggestion that there would be an increase in terrorist attacks in Europe, a prediction that certainly seems to have come true given the recent shooting at a concert venue in Moscow last month and the overall increased threat of other such attacks across the continent. THE DEAD ZONE Even after watching five of his feature films, David Cronenberg’s filmography has been such a mixed bag for me that I really don’t know what to make of him so far, and so I figured that the only real solution to that would be to watch more of his movies. Despite its potential, The Dead Zone doesn’t really live up to its Stephen King-penned premise, as the initial promise of watching Christopher Walken reckon with his newfound psychic abilities after a five year coma gets dulled by a lack of any real stakes, urgency, and meaningful characterization. Of all things, I found the structure of this movie to be weirdly similar to that of Love on a Leash, because while most films intertwine their main plot with several other storylines, The Dead Zone instead has entire sideplots spring up out of nowhere before being resolved roughly two scenes later, and that made the scenes involving detective work, potential drownings, and political corruption not actually be all that interesting due to how little weight they were given throughout the film. Generally speaking, I wouldn’t say that I liked The Dead Zone very much, but there were two elements to it that kept me from calling the film an outright bad one. Like usual, Christopher Walken gave a solid and compelling lead performance here as Johnny Smith, and his magnetic screen presence was able to make up for how underwritten his character actually was. The assassination setpiece in The Dead Zone was also really well executed, as it was pretty much the only scene in the whole movie that had any real tension to it (although Christopher Walken yelling “THE ICE, IS GONNA BREAK!” was easily my favorite individual moment in the whole movie). Those two aspects of The Dead Zone were able to keep me just engaged enough to say that it wasn’t a bad film, but that doesn’t mean that I consider it to be a good one, and while I am still intrigued by the rest of David Cronenberg’s filmography, my faith in them appealing to my tastes has unfortunately started to wane. Vintage #stephenking is the best Stephen King. Those 70s- 80s titles are still his best ( in my opinion). The original #thestand is a better tale as opposed to the " uncut" version. 300-400 pages leaner. Nothing vital is missing. And that awful #bmovie He's Baaaaack coda tacked on at the end that completely screws over the original, more sober and ambiguous original ending isn't there. 🥳 These are the titles I always return to. Before everything had to be connected to #thedarktower . My favorites are #thedeadzone , #salemslot and #christine . Pretty much all of his Signet titles ( including the ones not shown here ) are keepers. After his accident, the only King I feel matches his early run is #112263 . 🤔 Not that anybody asked. Started watching the new Fallout series on Amazon yesterday and I'm absolutely loving it 👏 So I thought I'd put together a radioactive #blackandgreenbookstack to share some thoughts on it. I've only played about two of the games, "Fallout 4" and "Fallout: New Vegas," but I can still very much appreciate the level of detail they put into the show. The set designs rule, the costumes are solid, the effects look great, and there's even some impressive gore sprinkled in here and there. Ellen Purnell absolutely kills it as Lucy, and Walton Goggins is always fun to see, especially seeing him play a drug-fueled, gunslinging ghoul. I highly recommend checking it out if you haven't. It's such a fun watch, and even if you aren't familiar with the games, I'm sure you'll still find something to like about it. Last month I read Stephen King’s ‘The Dead Zone’ for the first time. It feels fairly slight in terms of narrative and events compared to his other bigger novels like ‘The Stand’ and ‘IT’, but works really well as a character study of Johnny Smith, the man cursed with the terrible gift of seeing into the future. It’s a fairly episodic book, dealing with his life after a 5-year coma and dealing with his new-found powers. It’s a slow, sad book and a good one, just not quite a rapid-fire page-turner like some of King’s other books are. I’m a big fan of David Cronenberg’s 1983 adaptation as well, if only after a more recent watch. On first viewing, it felt even more episodic than the book, but that is why I love it now. It almost feels like a TV show condensed into 90 minutes or 3 episodes. The film is anchored by a rare straight leading man role by Christopher Walken, who plays Johnny perfectly - almost shy and quiet until he rages out in a few choice moments.

The people that loved him have moved on, new trends have hit the scene, and the political spectrum has continued shifting. But something else has changed, too. Johnny can see things now, things that show him the future, a future that soon spells out the end of mankind. That is of course, unless he can prevent it... There were plenty of aspects to this story that I really dug, even if the pacing was rather slow most of the time. For starters, I was both intrigued and unsettled by how much the story's politics still coincide with today's current landscape. Like how the character of Greg Stillson is eerily reminiscent of a certain former president who's name rhymes with "dump." 👀 Johnny was also a really enjoyable character to follow here. He was both funny and easy to route for, and is certainly the more underrated of King's vast catalog of characters. I also liked how this was one of King's first stories to take place in Castle Rock, which I got a kick out of. The suspense and tension throughout were handled really well, and had me on the edge of my seat despite knowing all the story beats from having seen the film (which is great btw, and is one I sometimes forget was done by good ol' David Cronenberg). All in all, this was a very solid read that sometimes shifted from a supernatural thriller to a political one, and was still captivating either way. ✨️ MARCH WRAP-UP ✨️ March was a pretty diverse month of reading! I think I hit almost every fiction genre that I enjoy 😂 Everything was a 4-5 ⭐️ star read, except for Song of Achilles. I had really high hopes for that one but I found it to be way too slow for me. Both Stephen King books were new to me and SO very good. I got in another Discworld book as well, which are always fun! I read The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch for a readalong hosted by @sci_fi_gem. I like reading Dick books with other people because they usually confuse me and it's nice seeing other people's opinions on what's happened 😂 Maeve Fly, To Shape A Dragon's Breath and The Hate U Give were the standouts of the month.
