We had a fabulous weekend at the Tuscany-inspired vineyard resort @thevineyardatflorence Our Dulce room captured the old warm charm of Tuscany with large wooden doors, tile, and a generous patio overlooking the Vineyard with picturesque vistas of the beautiful Texas Hill Country. The Villa Firenze hosts the tasting room, entrance to the exceptional patio, polo field, game room, and lots of other cozy private rooms with fireplaces and art galleries. We enjoyed brunch, lunch (pizza from their wood-fired oven), and a delicious dinner, all paired with their award-winning wines! Let me tell you, EVERYTHING is delicious!!! Also, everyone is warm and welcoming, and shares exemplary service. I’ve long been a fan of the Languedoc-Roussilon and specifically the Minervois AOC, but I hadn’t gotten into the more specific Minervois La Livinière cru within the Minervois prior to this trip. 🍇 We were at Château Ste. Eulalie a quick 8 minutes from Château Maris, both in Minervois La Livinière. This is a beautiful terroir-driven wine. Sun-soaked hills, rocky, limestone and schist, low shrubs, rosemary and lavender abound. Fresh acidity, yet warm ripe fruit. Amaury Coste and Agat Dalisson are the rising stars of the Languedoc Pézenas region. Their organic farming and low intervention winemaking make thoughtful and expressive wines. I finished the day at Chateau Maris in Minervois La Livinière with Robert Eden. This double certified biodynamic producer is also B Corp certified and is one of the most ecologically friendly wineries in the world. It was a gorgeous afternoon here in Half Moon Bay, so I found myself sitting on the deck with this 94-point single vineyard gem from Hartford Court. This is a bigger bodied Chardonnay that should please those who love meatier California Chardonnays. I recently read @sabrinaghayour book called "Persiana," and I was inspired to try out a few recipes from it. To elevate my meal, I also selected two wines that would pair perfectly with the dishes. Lebanon has a long history of wine production, dating back to ancient times when the Phoenicians introduced viticulture to the Mediterranean coast. Despite the many conflicts in the region, Lebanon still produces around 12,000,000 bottles of wine annually. The two wines that I selected were delicious and affordable. First, I tried the Chateau Héritage Blanc de Blancs 2021, a family-owned winery in the Bekaa Valley that blends Viognier, Muscat, Sauvignon, Chardonnay and a local grape called Obeidy. I served it at 9 degrees Celsius, and it was pale yellow with silver reflections. The nose was fragrant, featuring scents of lemon, ripe pineapple, peach, and exotic fruits, followed by an elegant mouthfeel with a clean fruity aftertaste. It pairs perfectly with Mezze and spicy Mediterranean starters. I got it from @Amathusdrinks The second wine was the Ixsir Grande Reserve 2015, produced at one of the highest vineyards in the world, located at around 1800m above sea level. It's a blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Arinarnoa. I double-decanted it and served it at 16 degrees Celsius. The wine had a deep garnet colour with intense notes of dark fruits, Mediterranean herbs, spices, and cocoa on the nose. The mouthfeel was round and warm, with a mouth-filling outburst. It's a powerful, well-balanced wine with a touch of sweetness that lasts in the mouth. Just over a week ago, we had the most epic meal at @restaurant__vantre in Paris. I was very excited for this meal as it is apparently ‘the place sommeliers will tell you to go’. It did not disappoint. It has a proper tome of a wine list which is always great fun to get lost in as a wine lover (@sophie_india deserves a medal for her patience 😂) After chatting to the sommelier we were guided to a 2003 Cuvee Lieu-Dit St. Joseph from Guigal. This had an unreal nose of prunes, raspberry and iron / blood. It slightly reminded me of the one and only time I’ve tried Trevallon. 2003 was a very hot vintage and you can definitely tell when tasting with lots of rich stewed fruits, but this was balanced with a smokiness and still good freshness, acidity and ripe red fruits. This was a gloriously indulgent wine, one that you relax and sink into. In a perfect world there would have been a bit more freshness and tension, but it was delicious and unlike anything we normally get to drink. We then decided to treat ourselves to a bottle of Vin Jaune. I am an enormous fan of Jura wine and the oxidative style, but had never tried its signature wine. This was extraordinary. It smelled like walnuts and to taste there were dried currants and nutmeg. So savoury and yet so fresh. My first but definitely not my last!
