It is difficult to know what to do with so much happiness. With sadness there is something to rub against, a wound to tend with lotion and cloth. When the world falls in around you, you have pieces to pick up, something to hold in your hands, like ticket stubs or change. But happiness floats. It doesn’t need you to hold it down. It doesn’t need anything. Happiness lands on the roof of the next house, singing, and disappears when it wants to. You are happy either way. Even the fact that you once lived in a peaceful tree house and now live over a quarry of noise and dust cannot make you unhappy. Everything has a life of its own, it too could wake up filled with possibilities of coffee cake and ripe peaches, and love even the floor which needs to be swept, the soiled linens and scratched records . . . Since there is no place large enough to contain so much happiness, you shrug, you raise your hands, and it flows out of you into everything you touch. You are not responsible. Her opinion is, Yogis that have been teaching for years, maybe decades, should earn more compared to those just graduating or teaching for a year maybe two. Her point was, the years of experience and education and the money invested in training should pay off in in-studio classes just like it would in any other business too. I agree with her on some levels, although looking at the bigger picture, there’s much more to consider for me. I see lots of young teachers who share the practice very professionally and with such care. They invest a lot of time to learn more, dive deeper, understand better and in their classes you might feel safe. And then there are teachers who have been in the business for 20+ years, might have hundreds or thousands of hours of education, but don’t seem to apply any of that knowledge in their classes or live by example (practice what you preach). There’s also “senior” teachers (not referring to age) who completed a 200hr training and nothing else but have been teaching for 15 years and you would never know because you trust them and enjoy their classes a lot. So how could you put a price on someone’s experience if it’s the effort and love for the practice of teaching that ultimately serves the studio/community/world? My conclusion: Don’t sell your offering under value if you think you deserve better pay. Put in the work (communicate, help out, step up or find something else) and be happy for every new YTT graduate with a dream and a mission and the opportunity to quit their 9-5 in order to serve a higher purpose. We all deserve to be paid for our effort, without comparison, jealousy, anger, envy. We all deserve to be seen, acknowledged and valued. So interested to know how you feel about this?
