Going to work with retro vibes. As Autism Awareness Month comes to an end, just wanna give a word of encouragement and inspiration to ALWAYS be yourself. Autistic or allistic. Growing up, I never learned to mask. My mum always taught me to embrace my differences. When I got frustrated about not fitting in, she was honest about how my differences would always make this hard for me BUT how it would also allow me to find authentic people that truly love me for me. Because I do not mask, people automatically notice my communication differences and Asperger's traits; but as I meet more people that accept me and love me for these traits, even say I'm cool, I learn to love and accept these differences that I often didn't understand growing up. In short, I am so BLESSED and thankful for all the people in my circle and for a mum who never gives up; never stops believing in me; and NEVER stops advocating. She gets so happy when I find authentic people to befriend and who accept me for me. When a person comes across as intelligent, it is often assumed that they can manage all aspects of life. They are not expected to struggle in any way. And it is assumed that if there are things they cannot do, it is because of lack of motivation and interest. It is assumed that they need to get motivated. It is assumed that they do not need help. . Nothing can be further from the truth. Intelligence alone is not enough to manage many things in life. This includes academics. You can be very bright and yet can struggle with reading, writing, and math. You can be very bright and struggle with managing time and being organized. You can be bright and struggle to have a conversation. You can be bright and struggle with chores such as grocery shopping and laundry. . It is important not to assume that being smart is the only thing that matters for daily functioning. Being smart is certainly a strength. But smart people can struggle quite a bit. They might need help and accommodations, and they might need to learn skills to manage many aspects of their lives. . The idea of autism being a linear spectrum with low-functioning at one end and high-functioning at the other end simplifies the autistic experience, and this can be damaging to peopleโs perception and understanding of autism. These functioning labels often fail to recognize the unique strengths and weaknesses of an autistic individual. People who are considered โlow-functioningโ can be dismissed or denied opportunities, while those considered โhigh-functioningโ may be denied support services they need. The autism wheel is a helpful tool that does a great job of visually representing how autism may appear in different people. While no graphic or tool can ever fully describe a personโs experience, the wheel provides a more in-depth way to understand the unique complexities at the individual level. The autism wheel features a collection of potential autistic traits, such as sensory sensitivities, special interests, anxiety, fidgets, social challenges, and more โ and lets each person express the degree to which they experience them. This tool can help individuals with autism and the people around them understand their unique needs. Someone who is considered โhigh-functioningโ may appear to not need as much support, but when we look at their wheel we may see that they donโt struggle in social situations, but they have difficulties with executive function. This person is no more or less autistic than any other autistic person; they just need more support in some areas than others. Everyoneโs autism wheel will look a little different โ and thatโs the way itโs supposed to be. I donโt usually get super personal on here but today is the day! Iโm ready to tell the world that IโM AUTISTIC. I was recently diagnosed at the age of 35 and it has been life-changing. Itโs a lot to process. I always felt different, like an alien from a distant planet. Being social takes more than I have to give. The world is too much, too bright, too loud. It affects the way I move my body. The way I interact and communicate (or donโt) with others is part of it. I can be rigid about certain things. I have specific and consuming interests. It is a broad spectrum. Ask me anything! Iโve been researching about it for almost a year. Iโve even worked with autistic adults and never knew how much I didnโt know. This is a positive thing for me because Iโve found out why I am the way I am and Iโve also found a wonderful community online. Itโs honestly a relief. I have so many new strategies to help myself navigate life in a better way. I feel compelled to reach out so that no one else is missed. I was born in the 80โs and back then no one wouldโve known. This has all been such an emotional journey. Some may think of this as a disability but I think of it as having a different operating system in a world not made for me. I just experience things differently. I am worthy because of and not despite my neurodiversity. One of the best memes I have ever found explaining this topic, during my life there are people who accused my mother of coddling me, spoiling me, that my autism and it's traits were some grand manipulation, which royally pissed my mother off, I as an adult appreciate that it did and that she has been the rock of which I bashed my autistic noggin against, and never worried she wouldn't be there. Saw @btbamofficial and @theacaciastrain last night. Third time Iโve seen Between the Buried and Me, first time seeing Aracia Strain. Actually never heard of Aracia Strain before I bought these tickets. Theyโre not bad, but Iโm not really into metalcore/deathcore (there are a few bands in that genre I do like though, Between the buried and me sometimes falls into it). Although the songs they played were heavy, but very slow, almost doom metal like, and their songs all kind of blanded together, and a constant drone. Again, theyโre not bad, but not my cup of tea, which is fine, I have very specific tastes in metal, and it would be shitty of my to expect everyone to cater to that. Especially since I just some random NPC. Although I did catch their Guitar Pick, which was pretty cool. But Between the Buried and Me, they were amazing. I mean Iโve seen them 3 times now, I wouldnโt be seeing them for a third time if I didnโt like them. I love how theyโll generally pick an album and play it in itโs entirely when they tour.
