Today I hiked my 80th mountain ⛰️ Today I completed my 1st mountain range 🗻 Today I did my first solo hike 🚶🏼 Firstly, I'll admit I'm not a fan of a solo hike for many reasons but it's something I feel like I've had to do/experience, mainly because it probably won't be the last one and doing it to bag Tom Buidhe just made sense. It's an hour from home, I've hiked the neighbouring munros 4 times and this hill was the last one in the range to tick off ✅ But all went well, I slogged up a heather/boggy mountain side to touch a rock, take a photo and head back down meeting some lovely people on the way 😊 Only 202 more to go 🫠 No 80 - Tom Buidhe ⛰️

Tom Buidhe is a pretty featureless dome on the Mounth plateau. It is very much a 'Munro Baggers' mountain. Just as I was internally lambasting the hill for it's lack of grandeur, I got a pretty good reminder that hill walking is not just about ridges, arretes, and spectacular crags. It's about enjoying the remoteness and the wildlife too. I heard the screech of a bird of prey, looked up, and noticed that I had company in the form of owls! I was treated to multiple flyovers from a brood of short-eared owls. There were four of them, and I'm assuming it was an adult pair with two juveniles. It was great to watch them circling overhead, and they followed me, appearing every so often, as I walked on to Cairn of Claise, and then back to the car as the sun set. They were probably hoping I'd disturb some grouse or hares for them! The owls turned a decent walk, in which I bagged 4 Munros, into an extraordinarily memorable one. A great evening, even though the hills themselves were not the most exciting on paper. Was feeling smug at the bottom as it was such a stunning day and even considered popping shorts on, early on was thinking this was going to be the 2 easiest Munros ever. About 2 hours in I was questioning my life choices and if 5am alarms at the weekend are really worth it….didn’t expect the snow to be anywhere near as deep as it was, that was a real slog - and our time was split roughly between 20% being upright, and 80% faceplanting / being flat on our arses….fun times ! Noticed a wee plaque on the way round and googled it when I got back home, v sad story about 5 people that died of hypothermia there in the “Jock’s Road tragedy of 1959”. Blizzard conditions were so bad it was a few days before a search party could finally get out…and on the day they did the temperature was -19.5 ! A failed attempt to hike Tom buidhe and Tolmount this morning from Glen Doll after ignoring the signs that jocks road was closed. What might have been possible if I didn’t have the bike but three quarters of the way into the forest the route started to become more difficult to get myself through never mind the bike. After climbing higher on several occasions and seeing trails heading back down to the original route that only lead me to dead ends. Eventually I had to turn back and look for a clear route down to the river and cross it somehow to the diverted path on the other side. Now over two hours since I left the car I managed to cross the white water river but couldn’t keep my feet dry. Rather than heading straight back to the car I cycled to the top of the forest to have a look at the hills but with the mountains still covered in snow I decided it wasn’t a good idea to hike in those conditions with wet feet. These munros are just not meant to be ticked off having missed them when doing the Glas Maol circuit also but lesson learned and was my own fault for ignoring that the route was closed. Did the round of 4 at Ghlas Maol (Creag Leacach, Glas Maol, Cairn of Claise and Càrn an Tuirc) and added the 2 extra ones at the back (Tom Buidhe and Tolmount) in for good measure, almost killing off my legs in the process 😅 So my total so far now sits at 33 🥳🥳 Last year I managed to complete 6 single munros solo over the whole summer, doing 6 in one day was something I would never have thought I would be able to manage, I was in awe last year of people that did multiple munros in one day. This summer since mid July, in just 2 and a half months, I've bagged 25 munros!!! Push yourself beyond your comfort zone people, do the things that you've always wanted to do, the things that seem out of reach because the thought terrifies you. It's so worth it, life is for living, go and experience it all!! Have other things on now for the next couple of weekends and probably won't manage to get out to do anything as far as munros go so chuffed I managed to hit the 30 this week although this was a tough wee round to do it on 🤣🤦🏼♀️ Disappearing non existent paths, tiny paths along steep mountain sides with steep drops, boulder fields, the now standard fkn bogs 🥴 tricky river crossings and the relentless, uphill, soul destroying walk back to the car along the road in the dark!!! Absolutely awesome hike yesterday from Glen Clova up the famous & special Jocks Road and then onto the Tolmount & Tom Buidhe Munros. 15.4 miles (25km) in 5 hours because I bailed on the pathless descent of Tom Buidhe & had to come back round the same way. Part 2 of 3#️⃣ . Cairn of Claise▲Tolmount▲Tom Buidhe▲Glas Maol▲, Spittal of Glenshee, Braemar, Scotland📍🏴⛰️ . . This next section was a nice easy walk albeit very loooong! The walk along the tops only required a little bit of re-ascent, much less than what we have experienced on previous routes though so the hardest part is keeping the legs going! . The clouds started coming in during our jaunt over to Tolmount following the bagging on Cairn of Claise. . The route from Cairn of Claise to Tolmount, then over to Tom Buidhe and back was pretty pathless. There was a path, but we lost it and decided to trudge through the bog instead which wasn't actually too bad, just a few skips and quick stepping required😄🐶 . The route from Tom Bhuide to Glas Maol was loooong although not technically challenging. I didn't get a photo of Piper at the top of Glas Maol because I was too focused on scranning my out of date, emergency Bounty that had been lingering at the bottom of my hiking bag for months🥴 . Overall, this section gets a 5/5⭐️ for ease . 🔸️Nothing technically challenging, just some wet ground . 🔸️Not too much in the sense of ascent, just small steep bits just before each summit but it never lasts too long . 🔸️Soft underfoot to ease the joints . 🔸️Fine for pooches to be offlead in between, however keep an eye on those that like to munch frogs . ❗️We counted 1 clean-ish water source, really not much up here and we had run out by time we summited Glas Maol. Pretty straightforward apart from the heather/peat bashing decent down to the burn from Tom Buidhe (perhaps missed the path but couldn't see one).
