"Calibre" es una buena muestra de la influencia que han tenido, en el cine más actual, las historias violentas y duras, como la vida misma, de los trabajos de directores como Sam Peckinpah, John Boorman o Walter Hill. La suspicacia, la mezquindad, el desprecio y la violencia desatada como última consecuencia dentro de un ambiente tenso y amenazador, por parte de los lugareños de pueblos o parajes muy profundos, han servido como premisa a cintas imprescindibles como "Perros de paja" del maestro Peckinpah, "Deliverance" de John Boorman o "La presa" de Walter Hill. A su vez las dos primeras cintas mencionadas han calado hondo dentro del repertorio de un amplio espectro de directores, dedicados a mostrar lo más oscuro y salvaje de la naturaleza humana, con más o menos suerte. Lo intentó plasmar el director español Koldo Serra en la flojísima y prescindible "Bosque de sombras", ni la aparición estelar de Gary Oldman o Paddy Considine consiguieron salvar el frustrado a la vez que frustrante proyecto, Thomas Vintenberg, hizo lo propio, dirigiendo una angustiosa y desasosegante cinta llena de referencias "a la europea" al cine de las dos primeras leyendas antes citadas, con su magnífico film "La caza". Por último, menciono también una cinta menor narrada con grandes dosis de suspense hasta su violentísimo clímax final, la desconocida y menospreciada, "Straightheads" con Gillian Anderson y Danny Dyer como protagonistas. Pues bien, la historia de la película que nos ocupa es terrible y está llena de tensión pero con una peculiaridad, y es que en este caso en concreto, la crueldad y el menosprecio de los lugareños ante la aparición de forasteros "non gratos" por sus tierras, se verá reforzada ante la amenaza de dos figuras representadas en un par de amigos que se van de fin de semana a cazar y son los que van a propiciar y a precipitar, de forma caótica, los desagradables acontecimientos que darán pie a la cacería, por parte de la población local, en sus propias carnes. Los actores británicos Jack Lowden y Martin McCann están soberbios como los dos colegas expuestos a una situación extralimitada que les supera en todos los sentidos, al igual que Tony Curran... ⬇️⬇️

We're a little behind the times on this one, but we checked out #Calibre for our most recent Angry Mule #movienight. We were mixed in our reactions, but overall it gave us an #EdenLake vibe - although that had a lot to do with #MartinMcCann flashing some serious #Fassbender-like smile action. It had solid bones, but we'll be honest that some of the tension was lost because we struggled with the accents at times (our bad - we probably should have thrown on the captions). Movie: Calibre (English) Year: 2018 OTT Platform: Netflix Marcus,a businessman,meets and convinces his boarding school friend Vaughn who’s a soon to be parent with his fiancée, for a visit to the Scottish Highlands for a deer hunting escapade with much coaxing and eventually they travel to the planned destination and settle in a hotel stay in the rural hamlet and spend the first night merrily drinking and dancing away in a local pub where they get acquainted with some members of the village folk who create an air of uneasiness for them.The next morning Marcus and Vaughn head out to the forests and what follows post their hunt unsettles their lives vehemently and constitute the rest of the thrilling tale. Cinematographer Márk Györi stupendously sets you in the wet,dark,chilling and gloomy atmosphere of the movie and incredibly makes you actually feel the disconcertment of the characters on screen.The entire cast is good especially-Martin McCann as the aggressive,impulsive and reckless Marcus is fantastic. @jack.lowden as the much responsible and level-headed Vaughn is supreme.After the misadventurous hunt in the woods,they both seamlessly adapt to their change in demeanour with utmost efficacy and conviction. @tonycurran as the ever mysterious Logan delivers a much demanded measured performance with ease and successfully keeps you guessing his character till the end.The only tad little bump we felt is the first 15 minutes or so of the film which really doesn’t catch an iota of interest BUT we as an audience must be a little bit patient to enjoy the final outcome(not only this but of any movie)more so now in the world of OTT where we have the evil liberty of the fast forward button! Calibre (Netflix) -This movie is not a masterpiece or a movie that wants to change the world, this is one of the best products covered by the golden powder of Netflix. Very well written and very well thought out for cinematic language, it is worth seeing and is full of good ideas. A thriller with a classic structure, that does not risk in bizarre or innovative options, but rather in an excellent direction, fantastic acting in minimal but effective language, in the construction of a story. It seems to me that it was not wasted time and it will not be from those films that we have easily forgotten. For a change, it's no longer a movie about someone who survives in a post-apocalyptic world, but about someone who outlives himself. Jack Lowden and Tony Curran are exceptionally well and Matt Palmer done fantastic job as director. CALIBRE (2018) Dir. Matt Palmer ________________________________ “Vaughn and Marcus, who have been friends since childhood, travel to a remote area of the Scottish Highlands for a hunting trip. The pair are tested to the limit when they face a thrilling situation which neither could have prepared for.” ________________________________ I discovered this movie because I’m a big fan of actor Jack Lowden (you’ve probably seen him in Dunkirk and Mary Queen of Scots), who plays one of the two lead characters. Now, I’m also a big fan of thriller movies, especially ones with a more psychological edge, and that's exactly what this movie is. You never really know what's going to happen, and this movie does a great job of keeping you on edge. Seriously, I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next. It’s a terrifyingly good story of what happens then things go very, very, wrong. It’s a great portrayal of a downward spiral. The two leads, Jack Lowden and Martin McCann, are great in their roles, and really make the film shine. They were so engaging and interesting to watch. Calibre. 2018. 👏👏👏 If you are looking for an excellent thriller/drama watch Calibre on Netflix. I went into this movie knowing nothing about it and was blown away. I can easily say this one of the most intense movies I’ve ever seen. I was quite literally biting my nails and on the edge of my seat. - • • Old childhood friend Marcus and Vaughn travel to the Scottish Highlands for a weekend of deer hunting. What happens next is completely shocking. That’s all I’m willing to give away.- • • It’s hard to make a review without spoiling it but this movie is so well paced and acted. The intensity only builds and you genuinely are questioning your morals and who really is a villain in this plot. At times it’s emotional and other times horrifying. The two childhood friends decide to go on an adventure trip together before Vaughan (Jack L) gets married to his pregnant fiance. Marcus (Martin M) is a hunter but its the first time for Vaughan. Upon reaching a small town, they hit the local pub where they meet the village head and understand that they have been facing a lot of economical issues because of a new hunting resort nearby. The next day, Marcys and Vaughan head out for hunting, still hungover. However, it is then that events take a nasty turn. The best friends need to keep calm and survive their time in this village. The movie is shot in Scotland's beautiful forests, the acting is flawless and events are extremely chilling (no gory stuff). The decisions that these friends have to take decide their fate and thats what makes this movie amazing.
