IMDb synopsis - A fever dream action film that follows Boy, a deaf person with a vibrant imagination. When his family is murdered, he is trained by a mysterious shaman to repress his childish imagination and become an instrument of death. . It was a fun, if somewhat flawed, hyper-violent double feature today. Boy Kills World was another really fun gory time at the cinema. I enjoyed the deaf/mute hook of our lead character & the video game style internal monologue. The internal narration provided a lot of the film's best comedy. Bill Skarsgård is in phenomenal shape & pulls off all the big action sequences really well. & anything with Yayan Ruhian in you know the hand-to-hand fight scenes are going to be absolutely incredible. What really brought the film down for me was the films editing & lighting. A lot of the action scenes were so dark & the camera never stopped frantically moving trying to follow all the action, making it very hard to see anything that was going on. But the camera also seemed to never be able to keep up with everything that was happening. So a large quantity of all the fighting was lost to the camera being in perpetual motion, chasing a few seconds behind all this, what appeared to be, great action. Not to mention all the cuts every few seconds in a lot of scenes, even made my eyes go funny on occasion because there were so many fast cuts within a matter of seconds. However, the final fight scene, that was a thing of beauty. Yayan Ruhian is arguably the best fight choreographer in the industry & he did not disappoint in an exceptional final fight that was magnificently violent & brutal to watch. A real mixed bag hyper-stylistic action movie. The good stuff I really, really loved. In order to maintain order, the family holds an annual televised event named “The Culling” where they take out a number of people. The protagonist of the film is named Boy (Bill Skarsgård) who escapes after his family are victims of the Culling. Boy is left deaf and a mute following the traumatic incident. Boy meets a shaman in the woods who trains him to become an instrument of death so that he can exact his revenge. Directed by: Moritz Mohr Screenplay by: Tyler Burton Smith and Arend Remmers Music by: Ludvig Forssell Starring: Bill Skarsgård, Jessica Rothe, Michelle Dockery, Famke Janssen, Sharlto Copley, Brett German, Isaiah Mustafa, Andrew Koji, H.Jon Benjamin What Works? This is a silly film which is probably obvious from the plot synopsis. The silliness is actually working for the film and at times against it. For most of the film’s runtime, it doesn’t take itself too serious which helps with some of the wonky story beats and the lack of world-building. Bill Skarsgård does a great job with his facial expressions and comedy timing because he does not speak due to the character being mute. H. Jon Benjamin (Bob’s Burgers, Archer) who is well known for his voice lends that iconic voice to Skarsgård’s “Boy.” The integration of the voice over and performance is great and leads to some very funny moments. Speaking of the comedy, this is more of an action comedy, but the jokes only work about half of the time. Brett German and Andrew Koji were standouts and most of their comedic bits worked. The action scenes have some hard-hitting and gory moments. There are a couple of twists towards the end that were somewhat compelling. If there’s one sub-genre I will almost always have a soft spot for, it’s comedic & unapologetically over-the-topic action flicks. It took mere seconds into the trailer for this movie to sell me. Now is it the nonstop adrenaline rush that it promises? Not quite, but there’s enough entertainment value between the cracks to make this movie worthwhile. The action sequences are grand, even if the editing can occasionally get a bit jarring. The fight choreography alone puts this movie on a pedestal, & the vibrance of the color pallets adds a notable personality. The costume & set designs are not entirely ambitious, but they are unique enough to be memorable. Where this movie does loose some steam is with its pacing. It has a slow start that makes it hard to become initially invested. There are many other times when the story tries to develop but only ends up abandoning any culminated momentum. This is partially due to the fact that among a large cast of eccentric characters, only a small handful were actually a fun presence onscreen. Bill Skarsgård is pretty dependable & Jessica Rothe is contagiously enjoyable to watch, but after that there are more characters that annoyed me than that I actually liked. Regardless, everything comes together an absolutely thrilling climax that I’d argue to be one of the best standalone scenes of the year. I’ll admit this movie won’t be for everyone. Rating: 8/10 A really fun time with lots of action and bloody scenes to enjoy aswell as a great cast and a cool story which I didn’t expect to go into the direction it went to so that was a great surprise! Didn’t expect the movie to be too serious so I enjoyed when it would get really crazy, over-the-top and silly. Some funny scenes in it too! A fun revenge story with some great action from Skarsgard which really gets me hyped for the crow movie coming out, the choreography was stylish and the music to back up those epic scenes. Great to see the kid who plays homelanders son from the boys in more roles too and even Famke (Jean Gray) from X-Men being back on the big screen! Skarsgard is just a great presence on screen too that’s a known fact. It was just straight action non stop blended well with a great revenge story with some surprises! X-MEN 2 di Bryan Singer Ispirata a una delle mie graphic novel preferite: “Dio ama, l’uomo uccide”, reputo questa pellicola uno dei migliori cinecomic mai fatti e una delle migliori sui mutanti. Gli X-Men si trovano in una situazione difficile quando il mutante Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming) attenta alla vita del Presidente. Mentre il gruppo indaga, il maggiore William Stryker (Brian Cox) sfrutta la situazione per dare il via a una serie di eventi che metteranno a rischio la vita della comunità mutante. Un film con una durata importante che grazie all’ottima regia di Singer e alla sceneggiatura intricata di Michael Dougherty, Dan Harris e David Hayter non pesa mai sullo spettatore. Tutti gli X-Men vengono approfonditi, compresi quelli appena inseriti come Nightcrawler, e viene dato maggiore peso a Wolverine, qui protagonista assoluto, a Jean (Famke Janssen) e al Prof. Xavier (Patrick Stewart). La scrittura presenta anche un’alleanza inaspettata. Il passato di Logan, di cui erano presenti qualche accenno nel primo capitolo, qui viene indagato quasi del tutto, legandolo a William Stryker. È infatti lui la punta di diamante di quest’opera. Un uomo che, a differenza del reverendo della controparte cartacea, è spinto nel suo odio per i mutanti dall’ossessione scientifica e non dal fervore religioso, reputandoli una malattia da estirpare e non un errore divino. Ma, anche se cambiano le motivazioni, non cambia la sua spietatezza. L’uomo è implacabile e le sue azioni porteranno i mutanti a compiere scelte insolite e lasceranno una profonda cicatrice su di loro. Qui trova il suo spazio anche Magneto, interpretato da uno Ian McKellen sempre in parte, che dimostra come abbia ancora molto da dire. Non si può concludere senza citare l’iconico e talentuoso cast. Boy Kills World: ⭐️⭐️⭐️.A fever dream action film that follows Boy, a deaf person with a vibrant imagination. When his family is murdered, he is trained by a mysterious shaman to repress his childish imagination and become an instrument of death. The action is Kingsman’s level kinetic carnage with a wildly funny script; imagine a lucid dream enhanced by some hallucinogenic mushrooms and that is this movie. The production design is live action anime. Will never look at a cheese grater the same way. Bill Skarsgard is wonderful as Boy; who has to play a role void of speech, just a narrated inner voice which adds lots of humour, the rest of the cast don’t let the side down either. Enjoyable, stylish nonsense, in a good way. Look, I’m not dumb, I know that Boy Kills World at the end of the day is a dumb movie. But I still loved the hell out of it. The action was well shot, the music was great, the kill scenes were clever, and the dialogue was hilarious. Plus you have Archer playing the voice of the main protagonist with Pennywise playing the live action protagonist. I honestly have a hard time criticizing Bill Skarsgård because I love him so much. I figured out one of the twists, but I did not figure out the second one so that’s a win for me. And then of course you have the gorgeous Famke Janssen who obviously is fantastic and damn she never seems to age. The whole cast blew me away and had great chemistry with each other. And I was laughing so hard throughout the film. There was some poor lighting where I had a hard time seeing what was going on. “Boy Kills World” (2023) is an action comedy directed by Moritz Mohr starring Bill Skarsgard, H. Jon Benjamin, Jessica Rothe & Michelle Dockery. I didn’t quite know what to make of this film originally, weird, fun and unique but pretty good too. Skarsgard is great considering he literally has no speaking lines - he carries the film well despite this. The voice-over is both hilarious and clever, it really poses for some hilarious lines and there are some hilarious scenes during the film too. The action is very good, the fight scenes are shot and choreographed very well and the violence and gore is very well done. The story was quite a mess but still interesting to say the least, the twist was also unexpected apart from the twist with Boy’s sister which i saw from a mile off - however it was still effective. I did think some of the performances were a little over the top and just poor such as Famke Jansen as the big bad, Dockery, Sharlto Copley and Andrew Koji - they just all felt a little too silly and over the top for my liking, however other cast members did very well. The music was pretty good too and fitted and accompanied the fight scenes very well too. Overall, i did like this movie. It certainly could’ve been better in some aspects and toned down in some areas - but it was certainly different and the voice-over and script really made it for me.
