Friends of ours have a local Sinking Spring, PA farm, @green_pig_farm . Never have I ever....been attacked by a weed. Or, perhaps, maybe I haven't paid close enough attention to my surroundings. I was out minding my own business pulling some weeds when I bumped this leggy, almost dead-looking weed. Unbeknownst to me, little spring loaded pods fired in every direction... including mine! If you've ever taken a drive through an Amish community, it's likely you've passed a roadside stand. Amongst the produce and canned goods at the stand whoopie pies probably also had a spot on a shelf. . . These handheld treats happen to be one of our family favorites, so it was no surprise that my daughter wanted them instead of a birthday cake to celebrate the day. However, there were a couple of challenges: we were low on supplies due to stay at home orders we were abiding by AND she wanted a unique flavor --shoo fly pie. . . We are under stay at home orders like many of you also are. This means no frivolous trips to the grocery store...and to respect our fellow citizens, we've taken that seriously. . . Today is my oldest daughter's 20th birthday and we have a tradition that you get to pick your birthday dinner and dessert. She asked for chicken alfredo and shoo fly whoopie pies. Normally, I wouldn't sweat it, but I haven't picked up groceries in weeks. For this reason, I had limited amounts of important ingredients; to make matters worse, I couldn't find a good recipe for the whoopie pies to save my life. . . So, I went to the drawing board, put my baking skills to the test, and came up with my own shoo fly whoopie pie recipe. And let me tell you, they were darn good. Like make-them-again-tomorrow good. . . We celebrated a birthday today, but I plan on typing up the recipe for you tomorrow. This playhouse needed a new home and a new purpose. It was given to us for free by a lovely family that lives just up the road. Not only did they donate the structure to the farm, they also supplied homemade peanut butter cookies and lemonade, AND helped us to dismantle it. In just a handful of hours, we drove it back to our Farm. It now lays in organized piles waiting for my vision to come to fruition. Food as art. That's what I'm going to call it. I think it's beautiful! ๐ . . So, this rustic arrangement happened for two reasons. For one, I didn't have enough flowers started to fill all of my pots because the goal for this season was to increase fruit and vegetable plant starts (and I certainly wasn't heading to a store for flowers!!). The second reason has to do with my inability to thin seedlings out and just throw away what is pulled. The closest pot made a safe haven for some of the castaway seedlings. So, we don't have flowers, but we have lettuces and celery filling up this planter. An added bonus...we can eat it! Good morning, my little warrior. I hope you were protected from the frost last night. Although it won't be much like spring today, enjoy the warm rays on your leaves. . . . I call these brussel sprouts my warriors because I only have 4 that survived the last frost. Stupid me transplanted them just two days before we were hit with some cold nighttime temps.... and I didn't bother to cover them because I thought they could handle it. I lost over half my plants -- the ones that remained nearly died, as evidenced by their dead leaves and failure to thrive. They hung in there and here they are today. It doesn't look like much, but our garden bed expansion is complete. ๐ We have increased our planting capabilities from seven (4 foot by 28 foot) beds to eleven. ELEVEN. And, each of these beds have been bordered with repurposed cedar fence pieces from our property. This should really help keep compost and mulch in and grass and weeds out. . . Most of the area is reserved for summer fruits and veggies, but if you look closely, you should see the cold tolerant crops that are "chillin'" in random spots. Here's what's growing: Bed 1 (perennials-100% planted): milkweed (for the pollinators), ever bearing red raspberries Bed 2 (perennials-100% planted): asparagus, strawberries Bed 3 (20% planted): milkweed, garlic Bed 4: (1% planted): chives Bed 5: (5% planted): milkweed Bed 6: (100 % planted): red cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower Bed 7 (100% planted): milkweed, peas, radishes, kale, swiss chard, carrots, kale, red beets, arugula, spinach Bed 8:(100% planted) Red and Yukon potatoes, red and yellow onions Bed 9: Empty Bed 10: Empty Bed 11: Empty . . . ๐ But, here's a secret...while all of the framed beds are complete, I forget to mention that we're also adding a corn "field". We know for sure that corn will be planted, but have been tossing around the idea of a three sister's garden.
