Fellow midlife baddies, here’s the secret: Lift heavy 💩 If you can do jumping jacks, air squats or any extra activity during your rest periods, it is time to increase that weight. Rest periods are scheduled for a reason. And if you find you don’t need much time to rest between your workout sets, you may not be pushing to your potential. Now granted, I’m not telling you if your new to training you need to lift 100lbs, but if you have been training and feel you don’t need to rest, it’s a good indicator you are not pushing hard enough. Resting appropriately between sets will help you feel physically ready to push with effort on your next set. I’ve read so many amazing books and one of my favorites is Master of Change by @bradstulberg . The most impactful lesson I’ve learned in a long time came from his research where he says that action can create motivation- especially when stuck in a rut. I have his quote “You don’t need to feel good to get going, you need to get going to give yourself a chance to feel good.” Never has that rung more true than now when my joints hurt or I’m fatigued and know that the beginning of a run or a new routine is going to suck. But I keep the above in mind and it’s held true over and over again. Just lace up the shoes. Step through the door. Take out the journal. Get out your foam roller. Press play on the workout video and just see where it takes you. We can’t afford to give up or give in to unhealthy habits at this stage of the game. I've been traveling since last Thursday so it's been a week since I've worked out. This Cathe Live was the perfect thing to come back to. Full body compound and hybrid weighted exercises that reach every part of the body, not to mention the heartrate! 🤘🏻💦 I'm headed into another busy several weeks at work and I'll try to stick with my schedule, but I know it's probably also gonna end up being whatever my brain can handle after 9-10 hour workdays. A good dinner doesn’t have to be complicated or time consuming. Since January, when I went completely vegan for two months, I’ve been learning to make vegetables the main focus of my meals and eat a plant-focused diet. I eat some meat, but usually not more than once a day, and I haven’t felt better in many years. Follow me as I begin to share this DELICIOUS journey with you and a bit more about living well in my now 50+ body. This yummy salad was my dinner tonight as well as a small quesadilla with sautéed mushrooms and wilted spinach. My salad dressing is olive oil, honey, Dijon, vegan pesto, cilantro mayo, and a little lemon juice. Salad consists of romaine, baby greens, shredded carrots, crunchy red cabbage, pickled red onion, chopped rotisserie chicken, herbed feta, dried cranberries, pomegranate, avocado, and sunflower seeds. Do you have a month that is just difficult for you? It brings up feelings that you just don’t really want to deal with. It makes you start to take stock in things you really don’t want to fully take responsibility for. May is that month for me. The 18th would have been my mama bear’s 76th birthday. The 12th is Mother’s Day. The fact that I lost my mama bear 12 years ago to cancer. So… May is the month that makes me take stock in how I might prevent my own daughter from feeling the pain I felt the day I got my mother’s call with her cancer diagnosis. 🩺💔 Nutrition can play a significant role in managing, and sometimes reversing, certain family health issues, especially those influenced by lifestyle and diet. A few diseases in which proper nutrition can help: 1. Cardiovascular Diseases 2. Type 2 Diabetes 3. Obesity 4. High Blood Pressure 5. Certain Cancers While genetics do play a role in many diseases, lifestyle changes including diet can significantly impact the progression and manifestation of certain inherited health issues. DON’T BE A COUCH POTATO. MOVE! Do you have a summer challenge? Mine is to lift my almost 8 year old twins on our annual summer hols. It’s a two fold challenge. 1. I need to be 💪🏼 enough to lift my twins at the same time. So that means strong core, back, legs and upper body. I love this challenge because it forces me to up the ante. 50 is fast approaching so it’s more important than ever to stay fit, healthy, feel and look great. 2. I’m going to be photographed in a bikini. 😬 Nuff said! Dance keeps me super fit and trim but I like to add a little extra into the mix. 18 months ago I went for my first 3km walk and I felt like I was dying! One month ago at the age of 59 I started running(after 4 months of recovering from a broken ankle bone) I’m still pretty slow but life has changed so much for me. I’ve stopped taking medication for high blood pressure, holidays are just so much better when you hike and walk, and I’ve no doubt added at least 10 years onto my life expectancy. Got a few uncommon tips for you today that’ll help you save time and money… AND not let food go to waste! 🥬 1. Freeze your greens for smoothies: ✔️ Wash and dry your greens ✔️ Spread on a baking sheet and freezer for a couple of hours ✔️ Transfer to freezer bags (remove air from the bag) ✔️ Pop them in the freezer until it’s time for your smoothie! 🫒 2. Store herbs in olive oil: ✔️Wash them, chop them, put them in an ice cube tray, and cover them with oil ✔️ Freeze. After it’s frozen through, place “cubes” in a labeled freezer bag ✔️ Next time you need a flavor boost while you’re cooking, drop in a cube! 🍚 3. Batch cook grains: ✔️As soon as you get home from grocery shopping, cook up a pot of quinoa, farro, or other healthy carb. ✔️ Store in the fridge for easy, quick weekly additions to meals. Stay fit over 50 …. Is a challenge, but it’s one I don’t take lightly. I see so many people in the same age bracket as me and they look like they’re 65 working themselves into an early grave. It’s OK that you have cheat meals. It’s ok ti have cake and not feel guilty. Growing old is a strange journey… If my soul feels ancient, it seems to me that I’ve just started becoming Me and yet i’m about half way through my existence. There’s a slight panic underlying this truth, a sudden urgency to do, see, create, experience, learn, explore more. All the years lived have left marks. Wrinkles and scars are stories my tongue isn’t telling. Of course, there’s more to this life journey than a piece of neatly ironed skin, there’s more to this body than supple contours - it’s messed up in so many ways by the bumps onto all the life corners, the falls, the hurts, the traumas, the tears carving furrows, the unspoken piercing holes into my heart - so, yes. there is more to all of Me, but somehow, after half a century, i’m still trying to figure out what that is… To be honest, the younger version of Me didn’t believe they would make it past 30… but years of relentless inner work took me out of the darkness towards the light, toward being alive again. And here I am, today, stepping into a new decade with deep, strong, mixed feelings. The past couple of years, i’ve had this heavy and sad feeling of loss, I lost myself somewhere along the way, caught up in trying to make a living to afford this incredible City, working 2 jobs, stuck in the hamster wheel, spinning, enduring an odd schedule isolating me, resulting in deep exhaustion and loneliness. But everything is only temporary, i keep telling myself, change is the only constant. And I am on my way to something different, everyday I must remind myself I am anew. So be quiet, my mind. be open my heart, be free my spirit, be in peace my soul, all we have is only Now.
