The thought of rest or slowing down used to give me anxiety. I had been programmed to run for so long. Running from repressed childhood trauma. Running from pain. Running from myself. There were years where I thought that sleeping only 5 hours a night was enough. Or sometimes not even sleep at all. 😳 Now I need about 8-10 hours a night. 😅 I was used to being fast Workaholic Jenn. I got sh*t done so quick. Who the hell builds an entire new business as a first-time entrepreneur in a few months? Workaholic Jenn. But every time I pushed myself, the Universe or my body said, “No sweet child, you have to slow down.” Forced intervention came in the form of burnout, mental breakdowns, or illness in my family. It was not gentle. But I can choose gentler now. I’m ready to live my life at 1x or 0.5x speed, fully present. 🙏🏽🌸 Slowing down feels so foreign to me. But I know it’s what I need to learn in this lifetime. I thought I could write my memoir in a year. It’s now been 4. The whole process has been sooooo slow for me, but I’m starting to see the rewards. Like when I’m dreaming, and I’m releasing trauma that I just wrote about in my chapters. That’s right. My soul is transforming slowly, powerfully, even in my dreams. While my body rests! What magic!!!!! 🥰🪄 The other day I allowed myself to veg out on the couch watching Netflix for hours. I hadn’t done that in many years. And I’m more in love with my son than ever. His laughs are more crisp. His hugs go straight to my heart. This is what true presence feels like. 🫂 Some days I still have a bit of panic thinking about how fast I wanna go, vs how I must choose to slow down (or be forced to). Some days it’s still a battle for me, between the old me and the new me. But I’m learning this new way of being. And in being, I am loving myself and letting go of my attachment to doing. ❤️ 👉🏼 If this resonates with you, I’m sending you, your inner child, and all the parts of yourself love. Do you listen to your body? Do you know how to rest? If the answer to that is yes, can you let me know your secrets because this is something I struggle with 😂. It's all well and good being driven, hardworking and committed to your job, but I think it's also important to listen to your body and read when it's telling you to switch off and take a break. I didn't listen and ended up losing a day of work last week as a result, so actually it made me less effective than powering through in the first place! I usually buy the fattiest cut of brisket I can find, sear it, braise it with homemade stock and Guinness stout and check it every few hours till it’s so so tender. After the meat cools down, I carry the heavy pot full of meat, and luscious liquid to the fridge and let the whole thing rest overnight. Finally back at it! 🏃🏻‍♀️💜 I took a little over a week off from running due to some issues with my left foot/arch, it got pretty painful to even walk on it so I knew I needed to take a break 🙅🏻‍♀️ I rested it, rolled it, iced it, etc then reached out to my PT 👩🏻‍⚕️ who suggested some stretches to incorporate into my routine which really helped. When the chemo drop hits hard mid cycle, and I'm still recovering from the thrombosis I had a couple weeks ago🤷🏻‍♀️. My neck still does get puffy if I'm not paying attention to how I move or breathe. I'm still trying to clear and heal from that blood clot, so when I'm not up walking, on the @onepeloton , driving my kids, yoga or whatever, I feel like this! It's very, very annoying. I'm not a fan of being nerfed by my body. This is what the other side of living with no new evidence of disease looks like. It's been challenging to not let this blow my confidence, but it did. I'm using my eyes to remind myself that things are still very good in my life, and that this too is fixable. It wasn't my food choices or something I overlooked in my own care. Shit happens without explanation, just like cancer wasn't in my genetics, and how I made it through November 2020 with a skull tumor, that really TRIED.🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️😭 My brain wasn't having any of that. As spring springs up, I find myself in a season of deep reflection and feeling stuck. There are some big personal decisions looming in my life and I feel pretty untethered. I know my nervous system needs some attention and I likely need to pay more attention to myself. Ignoring my self and my needs is my default. Can you relate?? Today did not go as planned. Sydney spiked a high fever over night and had to miss her comp. Her team mates did her so proud learning new choreography this morning with little to no time before performing those numbers. They did so well! It was a very sad and hard day to be home missing all the fun. But grateful for everyone that checked in on her and had understanding about her being sick. Resting is truly something I have to keep practicing… After proudly saying in a post yesterday that I was pretty comfy taking 2 days of rest in a row 😏, today I hit day 3 & my body was still telling me to rest some more … & I’ve been suddenly less comfy with that reality 😕 Thoughts I’ve been sitting with today, as I’ve tried to provide the ongoing rest I seem to need this week: 💬 “3 days in a row? REALLY?!” 💬 “What’s wrong with me that I need 3 days in a row to rest?” 💬 “I can’t do nothing for 3 days in a row” 💬 “What a waste of nearly a whole week” 💬 “I can’t ask my partner to do the nursery run AGAIN” 💬 “I can’t ask my partner to do bath & bedtime AGAIN” 💬 “He’ll think I’m taking the piss now … Am I taking the piss? … Maybe I am taking the piss … I must be!” These messages from my mind have been loud today 📢 But so has the message from my body - I’m simply still not feeling enough energy to “get back to my normal” 🤷🏼‍♀️ In retrospect, as well as a dip in my energy due to my monthly cycle, I’ve also, at the same time, had some stomach symptoms likely to have been caused by a bug 🦠😞 & I’ve felt weak as a kitten, even if I’ve not been totally wiped out by it 🥺 In many ways it’s easier for me to rest when a bug totally wipes me out & I need to be in bed - When I’m well enough to be up & showered & reading surely I’m well enough to also ‘do all the things?’ 🤔 No! But that’s what my mind tells me 🙄🤷🏼‍♀️ So I’ve had to sit with these thoughts today & keep investing in my practice of resting today. So I didn’t do the nursery run, & I’m not doing the bath time or bedtime routine (both for the 3rd day in a row). I did do some loads of washing today 🧺 but I also moved myself deliberately at a snails pace while doing it to incorporate a more ‘restful’ vibe to the task - Yes, I do think this counts as ‘practicing rest’ - I think anything that we can bring a slower pace to, will help us in rest becoming more normalised for us, over time. Today was definitely proper exercise for my practise of rest: To have these thoughts about my resting being ‘too much’ & then keep resting anyway, when it’s what my body needs 💕😌
