“The Right Word: Roget and His Thesaurus” is chock full of goodies. From beginning to end in this biography, synonyms are all over the illustrations, done beautifully, collage style. One reason I love this book is because it shows Roget as a child that thought differently. His entire life he constantly made lists of synonyms. I wonder if he was a divergent thinker, different learner, or had Asperger’s. I do not know enough to say. If you've been going since 1852, I think it's fair to call yourself the thesaurus to end all thesauruses! Not that Roget's Thesaurus is making the claim! I do think it's earned its reputation as the best helper for good writers of all kinds, though. There is treasure in every line. This 1988 Penquin softcover copy is in good condition. The treasure is yours at R40. My must have tool for writing is a Thesaurus... this is my old, well used and loved favourite copy. The note i found in its pages was written when my daughter was 6, she is now 22. As evidenced by its state of disrepair, I’ve spent many hours flipping back and forth through this (although I’ll admit to mostly using an online version the last few years.) I can’t part with it and I still love it best. Most of my enjoyment in writing comes from playing around with words so, it stands to reason I love chasing them down through the pages. Just finished reading ‘The man who made lists: love, death, madness and the creation of Roget’s Thesaurus’ (2008) by Joshua Kendall. As a list maker in times of stress I can identify with Peter Mark Roget’s obsession. At the age of eight he started the habit in his attempt to put the world in order, in order to calm his mind. The author makes much of Roget’s overbearing and needy mother, so much so that I wonder if he has such a mother himself. The madness and depression suffered by Roget’s grandmother, mother, daughter, sister and uncle threatened to overtake Roget also but his life was full and he achieved much. His most long-lasting effort was creating the book that was to become synonymous with synonyms.
