I got to discuss posthumanism, robot characters, and autism, not to mention poetry and other topics, with the delightful Franny Choi yesterday. My copy of their book, Soft Science, is dense with notes, tabs, and underlining, and now it’s got their handwriting as well as mine in the pages. I had to fight so much anxiety to experience any of that. Photos will almost always show you the best part, not the sitting in my car in total decision paralysis, certain no one really wants me around and I should just go home. I don’t always share those parts on social media. Living them is exhausting enough without reliving them on stage. Book 8 completed for the Ramadan Readathon hosted by @muslimreadathon ! Soft Science by Franny Choi What’s up with me getting two books a 2.5 star rating 😭😭😭? I am very upset I didn’t like this because I was very excited to read a science fiction poetry collection that integrates humanity & technology (cyborg in this case) but throughout the whole collection I was very confused. At one moment I thought I was following a cyborg’s perspective and then suddenly I am in a fish’s perspective and it keeps going on and on like that so I was lost. The only positive thing I liked but unfortunately did not save the book for me was the vibes and futuristic aesthetics of it. I felt that the use of language was good but because of my confusion on what is going on I couldn’t enjoy my time reading it. I was relived when I got to the end 🥲🥲🥲. In 1990s England, Kathy H. is one of several children attending Hailsham, a seemingly idyllic English boarding school located well away from city life. In classes, young boys and girls are taught art, literature, science and sports, trained in etiquette, and encouraged to hone their creative skills for the annual quarterly exchange sales and become well-rounded individuals. But curiously, Hailsham students have very little contact with the outside world and much of what lies beyond the horizon of the school is a mystery to them. That was Hailsham then. She is a young woman now. But at thirty-one, years after she and her friends Ruth and Tommy left the guarded sanctuary of their school, Kathy H. is finally able to look back and confront the full truth of what Hailsham was, and how it had shaped the lives and destinies of its oblivious, trusting students. **** So the thing is, I cannot actually speak about this novel, okay? Because if I do, I will spoil the specific kind of beauty, power and horror contained in the narrative. My advice is: go absolutely spoiler free into this, first. Don't read detailed reviews, don't look up on Goodreads or ANY other social media. Don't search for the movie. Hell, don't even look at the genre tags, or my tags on this post. . Well, then, what can I talk about? I suppose: the writing style. This was my first Ishiguro, and his style is–not to generalize–so quintessentially Japanese in a very English setting. Wistful, nostalgic, regretful. Like sitting with an old friend on your balcony, languid in the afternoon light. Having run out of anecdotes to recall, jokes to make. Things to say to a person you once loved. . The story falls in the same category of "didn't make me cry, but made me feel heavy and sorrowful" like The Memory Police did. It talks of friendship, old love, art, childhood memories– and also, a lot, about death, life, bodies, faces. It reminisces what could have happened, if only. [ Know that one poem, about how 'almost' is the saddest word? I think this book stays true to it. These kids could have almost made it. But fate, and the odds, were stacked against them. What could possibly be left to do. ]

Soft Science by Franny Choi . A collection of sci-fi poems exploring 21st century Asian-American femininity through the myriad intersections of technology, orientalism, queerness, gendered and racial violence, immigrant identity, agency, and post-internet global existentialism. Choi asks the reader to investigate not just identity, but the very idea of human consciousness―how to be animated and alive and sensory in a world increasingly invaded by cold, sterile artificial intelligence and capitalist automation. **** Sci Fi is NOT my genre, I am extremely stupid about scientific theory; concepts of science, technology and futurism used as meta narratives or allegories in literature and poetry leave me looking a bit like that creature from Spirited Away. Add to that: I definitely struggle with reading American political poetry– especially ones about the immigrant experience, I often end up floundering and unable to pick up the exact threads of works. Which is to say, most often, it's not the author's fault, it's me being a moron. . However, I have to say, I really liked this collection. Most often, I end up loving poetry by vibes, not concepts, but here– the premise of basing an entire poetry collection around the Turing Test felt brilliant to me. For people who don't know: Turing Test is a type of mechanism used to detect the "intelligence" of an artificial machinery– be it a computer, an Android robot or just a single programme. Basically, it asks: can your iPad, character.ai or Google Assistant actually emulate humans? Can they hold a conversation? Except, Choi turns the concept on its head by combining the conventional scientific AI question with that of minority identities in USA, especially immigrants of the Global South. If we cannot hold a conversation or keep our own with Western tech, Western capitalism, Western "science", are we not human? Are we aliens, artificial, unreal too? If our identity is not validated by Western progressive discourse, do we exist? . Every poem is a play of semantics: marginalized identity and global politic seen through the lens of AI and sci-fi. I loved how clever it was. THIS is true, experimental postmodern poetry.

Some of the books I’ve been carrying from home to work and back again but haven’t touched all week! It’s the end of the first week of my seventh year of teaching (though I feel like I’ve been out of college max 3 years 😂), and it’s been intense- as first weeks always are. I’m always searching for that just right balance of prepared and not working like 70 hours a week and… well I’m trying some things out lol. Reading is my preferred way to decompress after work but between the regular hectic mess (this was supposed to be hecticness but then autocorrect was also kinda right) of the first week and my commitment to The Sealey Challenge I’ve only read poetry this week. While I’m loving all the poetry (and honestly SHOCKED I’ve stuck with the challenge so far) it is definitely not my usual comfort reading. But I am sticking with it and having the challenge happening does help me make time for reading- so I don’t end up just coming home and working another three hours 😅 Here’s hoping things even out a bit and I can finally get to these gorgeous books!
