The road back to health is a hell of a road. It winds, it bends, it disappears and more times than you can count you end up back at the starting line. If you ever think you are going to reach the finish line, you’re doing it wrong. Aim to stay in the game. Aim to keep on the trail. Aim to feel better today than yesterday and that may mean that today you can’t get out of bed, doesn’t matter, just know that you’re still on the trail and that is what matters. When I was healthy I would balk at diets that cut out alcohol and cheese/diary. That was way way more of a commitment than I was able to make then. After a few stays in the hospital and being bed ridden not able to digest food for 5/6 months will change all of that rather quickly. You find out exactly what you can’t live without and for me it wasn’t fried food, French fries, alcohol or even cheese(that last one surprised me too). It was tomato 🍅 sandwiches 🥪. I literally made all of these life altering changes so I could have a tomato sandwich in my lifetime again. You cannot even tell you how tired my friends are of hearing me go on and on about damn tomatoes 🍅, super exhausted. I was finally strong enough to go fishing and S crossed something off of my bucket list and took the fish we caught to a restaurant to have it cooked! Being able to eat is goal worthy enough but having ceviche made with the fish you were strong enough to catch was, well there are no words for that. “If you are going through hell, keep going” -Churchill Keep this on repeat in your head and just don’t stop. My favorite @3mlittmann stethoscope usually hung around my neck and chest, can’t work without it. Hanging it at the vineyard as a symbol of temporary respite from my busy 50 hour week as a Pediatrician dealing with so many sick kiddos, newborns and annual physicals. It was 10 times worse not too long ago. Physician burnout? I so get it. What saved me was my vineyard, garden, walking through my fields, watching sunsets and enjoying our 🍷with wonderful human beings. Oh and of course binging on newly discovered Kdramas (another form of therapy). Life is about having balance, it was for me. What would have been better thing to do on a holiday than to go out and bike with friends in beautiful Hong Kong. This was my second bike ride outside my comfort zone (Shatin/Taipo area) since my surgeries and subsequent recovery late August last year. I felt very good but still have a long way to get my fitness back. The ride itself was absolutely beautiful. It was my first time to ride in the Sai Kung West country park. Absolutely beautiful ride. Today I got my training statistics for 2022 from Strava. Last year was an interesting year for me. I managed to maintain good fitness with no injuries in order to undertake the Kashgar-to-Karachi (K2K) challenge, handbiking for 3,000Km but as my life has it for me something out of the ordinary happened and I had a medical emergency a week before I was supposed to fly out for the K2K challenge. From August till the end of December 2022 I underwent three (3) surgeries to fix the emergency health issues for which I had to be rushed to the ER and for which I had to postpone my K2K challenge. I have to say that overall this health emergency was somewhat a blessing in disguise. Now to my Strava results. I only managed to clock in 5,796Km for 2022 which is 4,550Km less from 2021. This also meant I was not able to meet my 10,000Km yearly target. Was finally able to participate and finish in good time the 香港單車節 Hong Kong Cyclothon. I participated in the 30km challenge. Loved every aspect of it especially being treated as a normal cyclist by the organizers (special kudos to the organizers) and off course having the opportunity to bike over routes in Hong Kong which would not be possible otherwise. I was also quite overwhelmed to see so many cyclist turn up for the event although it was freezing with strong gusts. Today was the first proper day of winter in Hong Kong with morning temperatures down to 10 degrees centigrade. Three months since my two surgeries. My biking friends were doing their long distance bike ride today so I decided to join to see where I stood with my fitness. Was pleasantly surprised - handbiked almost 85Km with an altitude gain of 1,000 plus meters. Started in science park and ended in Tsuen Wan West after climbing Brides pool road and then climbing Tai Lam. We remember September 2020 when we realised that Covid was going to stay longer than expected and hit harder and we were so worried! How are we going to make a living again without tourists? We are used to a long low season and usually save enough money to get through that, but if there is no high season, it means years without income?! Difficult times push you to be creative and innovative and out of these struggles came a new product: the online cooking classes! Many of you came to our rescue and joined one or many online cooking classes and all of a sudden we had a new job and a new purpose! It was amazing! During the week we would take bookings, promote the class with stories of Mon Cooking good food and enjoy our beautiful and empty island. And on the weekends we would travel online to Germany, US, Netherlands, England and more! Today was the end of an era. Probably the last online cooking class. The island starts to get busy, high season is in the air! And combining live classes with online ones early morning and late at night is too much, even for SUPERMON! The pandemic rages on, natural disasters are more of a threat, and the May 2022 elections devastated progressive hope. For the next month, there have been talks of having face-to-face classes. The world has not ended and life as we know it goes on. "I have survived. I look back at the broken, symptomatic, flood-hit, anxious wreck that I was and while things are a bit better, I know that some circumstances do not make me stronger. As the saying goes by Maya Angelou: "You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated" Today is almost a month and 20 days since my two surgeries and almost 20Kg down on my weight and lost muscle mass. Today was the day to get back into my training regime and back to physical fitness. I did a short test lap on Zwift bike trainer (7.5Km) and to my delight I was able to hold my heart rate, my breathing and my muscle strength. Not as bad as I was expecting. It is going to be some hard work in the next few months to get back to my normal physical fitness. I am hoping my body and my health holds for me to exert more and more., Continue to watch this space. P.S. Absolutely thrilled to see hand bikes on Zwift. #August 八月初去了一趟宜蘭，坐船出海，終於親眼見到美麗的牛奶海 Fun fact 龜山島是ㄧ座活火山，因地底溫泉噴發與海水融合成乳白色，形成夢幻的漸層樣貌，所以靠近牛奶海時，會聞到濃郁的硫磺味，又臭又美！😆 八月中我確診了，原本以為自己會是天選之人，結果還是逃不過病毒的侵襲，前三天全身肌肉酸痛，非常疲倦，第四天開始有些咳嗽，除此之外沒有其他症狀，因為個人因素我沒有打疫苗，所以發現確診時有點緊張，幸好一切無大礙，某方面來說確診後有點鬆了一口氣，知道自己健壯的跟牛一樣就放心了 Another fun fact 朋友告訴我，他的醫生說病毒也是蛋白質，身體餓沒東西吃就會去吃病毒，所以適時的進行斷食是很好的 原本就打算要進行飲食控制的我，也順勢開始了我的減脂計畫，隔離那一週真的有點厭世，因為關在家裡還不能大吃大喝，但是皇天不負苦心人，體脂終於順利下降了，雖然有夠緩慢，但我已經很滿足😌 ——— #taiwan #summer #survivingcovid19
