How about his short story, Father, Son, Holy Rabbit? • Father, Son, Holy Rabbit, originally published in issue #57 of @cemeterydancepub magazine, is the first story in The Ones That Got Away. It is probably one of the most disturbing stories I’ve read… but man is it a beauty. Just absolutely devastating but so brilliantly executed. • The small details and then the reveal will absolutely leave you uncomfortable and covered in goosebumps and shivers… but again… it is just so fantastically written, you can’t look away. I’ve actually read this story individually three times — most recently about a month ago (thanks for rereading and letting me Charlie meme you, @cat.lantz), and it has left my jaw on the floor every time. What are your thoughts on Short Stories? • I think they’re a really interesting and difficult medium to excel at. Stephen King and Joe Hill, and obviously the classic greats, Ray Bradbury and Edgar Allan Poe come to mind… but I’m here to talk about Stephen Graham Jones, today. More specifically, his collection, The Ones That Got Away. • This collection was a reread for me and every single story got better. I was able to find so many little nuances and really appreciate the craftsmanship of these stories and honestly the collection as a whole. • Laird Barron’s intro was phenomenal and then right off the bat, @stephengrahamjones swung for the fences with Father, Son, Holy Rabbit — HO LEE SHIT. • So Perfect, Raphael, and Crawlspace are other notable highlights, but that titular story, Teeth… okay shit man I can’t narrow this down — they really are all good. Seeing some of the threads he’s utilized in other stories (Chainsaw 👀), was so fun too and being able to (I think so at least), pick up on some of the deeper meanings in these stories (I’m looking at you, Teeth), was amazing. • Overall this collection is a very solid 4.5/5 and I had an amazing time rereading it. What’s your favorite point of view/perspective for books? • This isn’t a recent discovery for me, but more of a recent revelation, if you will — I love first person but even deeper than that, I really love first person when it’s a reflection — telling a story about the past. • Stephen King and Stephen Graham Jones both do this incredibly well. Joyland and The Body are prime examples as well as Mongrels and Mapping The Interior. SGJ has also nailed this perspective in some of the short stories included in The Ones That Got Away. • There’s something about the way these stories are written that just feels so real and so personal. These are the ones that got away in 2023… So on every tbr now I have a little box in my challenges that says carry over - where I try to finish up any books left over from previous months. And considering I have yet to finish a book this month I have a feeling that this pile is gonna double next month. Essentially if I make it through Feb and I still have books from previous tbr’s I need someone to run behind me with the Shame Bell ala Hannah Waddington in Game of Thrones. My reason for having read nothing - Babel. It is HEAVY but not in an unpleasant way. The Ones That Got Away There were a lot of books I didn't get to this year. I'm not surprised. I am a mood reader after all. However it's kind of a shock that I didn't get to these two books. Heart Of A Sun Warrior came out last November. I was excited for it but I don't know what happened! Then there's Foxglove. It was one of my most anticipated releases this year. I think I was waiting for the right mood? 🤣 It came out in August though so it hasn't been on my TBR as long. Both of these have a third in the series coming in 2024 so if I finally get to these then I won't have to wait as long for the next one!
