Happy New Year, everyone! My name is Gilly and I'm the writer of the scifi-fantasy novel formerly titled Together They Moved Mountains. I say "formerly" because my main writing goal this month will be to think of a better title! I've realized just how inhibiting it can be, not having one that resonates, and how much of a brick wall it can create on the journey towards publishing. How can I even begin to think of a cover, for example, when I don't have a good enough title??? Therefore, I'm wiping the slate clean. Until I can think of a solid title, I'll refer to my novel as Book One. I really hope this helps. Okay summer has switched on here in the frozen north. I started participating in writing challenges here on the 'Gram in February, 2021. I remember specifically because my first was the romantically-themed challenge by @maryrookwritesabook and @ellehoustonwriter. Before then, I wouldn't have called myself a writer. But I had an idea for a story (more like, I realized my idea might be decent enough to mold into a full-length book), and knew I needed help. How do you create believable characters? #themoonshadowandskychallenge This one is tough, as it's equivalent to answering the science/math student's "I don't understand the humanities, please tell me why they're so important." (Although, the use of "please" is rare.) You can answer by giving a list of reasons as to why studying the humanities benefits everyone, or you can recognize that, without having certain experiences, listing facts may not be enough. I feel the same about sharing how I create believable characters. It's something I do well, according to readers. Explaining how I do it is another story. The short answer is I just write them as I see people and imagine how they feel. But that's hardly helpful if you're struggling, so here's a few things: • Don't let your characters fall into stereotypes. People rarely fit into such easy categories. I do this by putting characters into situations where they can reveal more about themselves. (Ex: give your shy character a reason to fight or get angry, or your logical character a reason to laugh and be silly.) • Give them everyday, relatable dialogue. Read the conversations out loud if you must. • Give them habits we can then use to predict other behaviors. (Ex: if a character would rather take the stairs than wait for an elevator, they'll probably take a longer but less congested route rather than sit in traffic.) • This sounds odd, but let go of the idea that you must know every little thing about your characters. Someone asked me once what my MC's favorite type of tea was, and I remember thinking "Who cares?" Obviously I didn't respond that way, but the person helped me realize I didn't need to know the answer as it wasn't relevant to the overall story. Self-Care Sunday #themoonearthandskychallenge Mother Nature gave us another foot of snow yesterday. I can't quite get over how powdery and fluffy the snow is here. I've been exercising more. Nothing regular. Maybe twice a week, but it's better than nothing. To get more excited about it, I've been incorporating ballet and Irish dance into the routines. Drinking, however, has become so habitual. Nothing crazy; I just know it's something that's taken control of my life and I don't like that. I talked about forms of addiction in my neuroscience class. While this isn't a snippet, I'd like to talk about my villain and how he treats one of my characters (pictured here). To keep the long story short, I created my antagonist after a two-hour long phone call I had with an uncle who was once very dear to me. During the call, I was stunned to learn how misogynistic he'd become. It hurt for multiple reasons, one being that he was one of the people who inspired my love of chem and physics. My antagonist ended up being a crazed, controlling scientist who hates women. Who knew? Pictured is my MC's teacher, one of the people under my antagonists control. To him she's merely an object, a pawn in a greater story to get what he wants. When my MC is interested in someone, she'll keep the conversation going. She likes to test a person's knowledge and honesty, especially if she views them as her equal. Likewise, if she's not feeling it, she'll be more withdrawn and her comments will be more natural and polite. She's not one to say "I love you," but she'll show it in her own way with affection and dedication. (I've tested scenes where she does manage to use those three terrifying words. I've mentioned before that I spend a lot of time thinking before writing anything down, and that's because I want to be sure I have something worthwhile. I didn't go to high school. I spent most of my time raising children in a household that didn't think evolution was real. We weren't religious, though, just different. I eventually entered the workforce at the height of the recession. Without meaning to, I surrounded myself with people who had so much knowledge. I wasn't comfortable *at all,* especially during the first couple of years, and there were many times I felt isolated from those who were supposed to be my best friends. But I couldn't blame them; they had no idea of the trauma I was going through to change my perspectives. But it got better. I learned more about things that once confused and terrified me. I grew more confident in my abilities. I finally thought I could be good enough for higher education. I ended up getting a degree in science education. Who is your smartest character? #januarywritingchallenge So traits like smartness are very contextual and largely depend on a person's experience with what is being tested. (I use the term "tested" both in the literal sense and to elaborate how someone reacts to a situation.) So Imma change the question to: Of all your characters, who experiences the most growth? The obvious answer is my MC, since both books in the series will revolve around her experiences and how she learns to adapt and view things differently. However, since I'm only on the first book, the character who currently experiences the most growth (and in the shortest amount of time) is her teacher. When we first meet her, she feels superior to almost everyone in every way. However, six chapters later, she begins to realize things (and people) are often more complex and amazing than she thought. Something I think the writing industry gets wrong is perpetuating the idea that you *have* to hook the reader with the first page, let alone the first sentence. Even the first five pages is extreme to me. Sure I've put down some books, but not after I dedicated a substantial amount of time to them. I get that everything is fueled by monetary rewards in the publishing industry (which is a topic for another day), but as a buyer I've also invested in a story. I want to finish it, and start the next book. Anyways, the summary on the back of the book is typically a greater selling point for me. It should tell me more of what the story will become than the first five pages ever could.
