Three centuries it would be before the sun aligned itself with the temple. When skin hardened by years would flake away, dust the ancient air like white ash. Three centuries it would be before his believers returned to him, cloaked in God’s white, hearts fervent with duty, eyes awaiting the sight of his living skin. Inuban clicked his sandaled feet through the halls of the temple, his presence echoing up the columns, still breath slipping into the stale air. Nostalgia grabbed hold of his smell: Maplewood resin mingling with the waft of ivory soap and dirt water. An urge to drop to the floor and clasp his hands drafted over his conscience. A conditioned response. Memory. It was these smells that accompanied him to the prayer halls, where he and his brothers would speak to the titan en masse. Offer praise, thanks, and worship. Everyone who has ever hurt me has been hurt to the same extent by another person. It’s when we choose to pass along pain that we lose our connection to the Source of good and we lose our way. My father chose to continue the cycle. My father lost his way, and so did his father. Reproduction of ourselves is what we live for. I signed up for the “Author’s Publishing Playbook” with @carlywatters knowing that it was going to be something I really got into over the summer. (I have to say that it was lifetime access to the course that sold me on it. I knew I didn’t have the time at the moment to give it my full attention, but come on! Lifetime access! Who can pass that up?!) Yesterday though, I was able to make it to the Q&A session and I’m so glad I took the hour to do so. I absolutely love Microsoft’s OneNote. This is how I keep up with my writing between my phone and my tablet. It’s a lifesaver when you’re out somewhere and an idea hits you. But you have no pen and not tablet. I’ve even recorded on the phone app while driving to keep my ideas together. This is something that has truly helped keep me “organized” to finally get a book on the road to publication. Plus, Microsoft gives free access to it when you buy word. So free equals a win for me. Caspian didn’t eat yesterday. He hardly drank. He had a little bit of apple juice and a little bit of water. He’s not sleeping well, very, very restless. I’m staying up tonight to give him a least a little sip of water every time he wakes up, and every hour if he hasn’t woken. He’s fighting every sip though and says no, that he doesn’t want it. Sometimes he’s even spitting it out. Not good. While he is sleeping, I’m getting in some really good writing time. One of my favorite authors said “hard is not the same thing as bad”, and that’s what I’m thinking of tonight. It’s hard that he’s so sick. It’s hard not sleeping because I’m staying up all night taking care of him, and spending the day caring for not only him, but also spending time with the kiddos who aren’t sick. Through this I’m modeling for my kids what it looks like to care for others, and I’m building a stronger relationship with each of them. This hard will have a good outcome. But I will say, I cannot wait until he is feeling better. I want my happy boy back. When writing the first draft I think faster than I write. All the scenes made sense at the start but after the first read through, I knew I needed to add details for someone that wasn't in my head. All the things I love about characters were not there for a reader to see, how can I make them love them and then hate them all together without the details that ties these together. ✨️Non-bookish post✨️ For years, I only wrote with paper and pen. I found that my thoughts came out so much clearer when I wrote this way as opposed to writing on a computer. Then a family friend poked fun at me once for not writing on a computer "like most of us in the 21st century," and although I know there was no malicious intent behind his comment, I let it get to me, and I stopped writing with pen and paper as much. I share this to remind you that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." If something works for you, who cares if someone would do something different? Of course they would, but that's for them to work out, not you. We should always be open to new ideas, of course. But, whether I choose to write by hand or on a computer isn't hurting anyone (except maybe my wrists after a while, but that's beside the point 😂). If I'm writing words that are honest and meaningful to me, that matters way more than how those words are being written. If you do things differently than someone else, and it works for you, that's amazing! You're doing it! Don't let anyone discourage you just because it's not the way they would do something. First Post - My name is Aspen. I escaped a polygamist cult in March of 2020, just one week before the first COVID shutdown. When the public health emergency ended in 2023, I was twenty-four years old and had only experienced two worlds: Cults and COVID. I created this page to garner an audience for the content I have yet to create. The exclamation point may be a bit misleading. Iykyk, querying is rough on the feelings. I received a very kind and gentle pass this morning from an agent I was really excited about. They did offer feedback, which they absolutely do not have to do, so I’ll be mulling that over this weekend. It’s become a throwaway line in rejections, but it’s moments like this I’m glad most agents mention that this is a very subjective business. TGIF! When I started writing, I knew that my book needed internal and external conflict. But I had NO IDEA what my external conflict was going to be. None. Zip. Zilch. So I wrote strictly with the internal conflict in mind. I knew that the internal conflict was the primary conflict - so I figured why not start there. Of course, now that I'm getting close to finishing the initial draft of the internal conflict - panic was starting to hit. What the hell was my external conflict going to be? How was I going to weave it into my story? I had brainstormed a few ideas but didn't like them. Until this morning! Then my external conflict came to me! Phew! Is it going to take some work to weave it in there? Yup! But does it fit with my main character? Yup! Is it going to be a great addition to the story? Yup! Do I feel relieved? Yup! So my goal is to finish the internal conflict writing - then insert the external conflict - and then see where I'm at. (Because yes, I sent one of my writing peeps a message yesterday saying that when it comes time to revise, I may flip the entire thing to first person! But that's a decision for another day!)
