The sun shone on Saturday for parkrun 🌞 Lee on the Solent saw 15 Vegan runners come along for the run and some stayed on to go to the Hovercraft museum. David got to slide his new racing chair with Andy pushing…reports of hitting bins and rocks along the course but it’s all a learning curve and luckily David managed to stay in the chair. Our first wheelchair-run parkrun - David is now taking part in the MWC category (who knew that was a thing!). We love the #delichon chair 💺- it will be a real game changer for us. Gorgeous crocheted blanket from @clairerobinson73 to keep David warm. Managed 33:32 (luckily already have the palindrome or that would have been annoying!) Actual moving time was 32:47 but stood and waited until the crowd thinned before starting. Yesterday was parkrun 164 at Moors Valley and volunteer 32 for David who marshalled at Glenys's corner. My back felt very stiff and was very painful for the first 2km but I ran better than last week. My Garmin won't sync due to the outage but I definitely ran a 4.47km I think in the middle which I'm happy with after 3 months off. Then we had a successful plant and book swap. Apologies for the late parkrun update from last weekend I was parkrun touristing myself and was away for a few days… We had 18 Vegan Runners and one volunteer at Bournemouth meet up with Wiltshire Vegan runners and afterwards they all went off to Mad Cucumber for some food and chatter. @clairerobinson73 celebrated her 100th parkrun with some of the Hampshire Vegan runners - Congratulations 🎉 Claire 💯!! Jasper took along dog dad Jon to Great Salterns. Long run Sunday...ok not too long but over tough tricky terrain and the ever present mud. The wood anemones and lesser celandine are now flowering though and reminding me that spring is my favourite time on the trails. . Running is feeling like hard work at the minute but I'm one week into a new training plan so hoping that feeling settles soon. . A very belated parkrun round up this week? Two meet-ups occurred this weekend. Portsmouth Lakeside had 14 Vegan runners attend plus Simons children who even had a finishing banner at the end. Alice, David, Layla, Jon, Omesh, Richard, Claire, Andy, Simon, Ruth, Ella and Lucy ran or walked parkrun and then headed off to the Hunter Gatherer for breakfast. The Wiltshire VRs arranged a meet up in Chippenham. Among the 24 VRs there were reps from Bristol VRs as well as some of our own Hampshire VRs. Maria, Andy, Matt, Kate were amongst the group and they of course all headed off to breakfast afterwards. Today was race day! The @punkpantherevents Welcome Way and I did the 20 mile distance. I didn't think I was quite 20 mile fit, but it turned out better than I thought it would. The hills were tough, the mud was gloopy but the running was actually ok, easier than I thought it would be. . I met this lovely lady @fiona.hunter.167527 and we shared miles from about mile 2 right to the end, which made it a brilliant day out with a new trail buddy. . My lovely pal @claire_iggy_anstee was at the finish and saved my post-gel-sugar-crashing-ass with emergency Oreos (you all need that kind of friend 💚) and receiving a 'good luck' message at the start of the day from work bestie Michelle @mick5166 made for a perfect day where I felt supported and loved 😍😍 I feel mentally prepared now for another year of crazy events and races. Stew of celeriac, puy lentils and red wine with fresh sage and thyme and topped with pesto Cook onion, garlic, 1 chopped celeriac and 3 chopped carrots in olive oil with fresh sage and oregano for 10 mins, then add a glass of red wine, 2 bay leaves and 2 tbsp tomato purée and sweat for a further 15 mins. A big 17 mile run from Five Rise Locks back to Leeds today. It was a big step up, I've not run more than 10 miles in a long time. The weather and light was stunning though. . Icey, sunny and still, fog rising, water evaporating and this beautiful pony stood posing for me. There was so much tranquility and stillness in this moment. Running can often be mediative for me and there was a definite flow state experience today, before the world woke up and the mist had evaporated. . Medal Monday!! Well done to the Vegan runners that made it out in the rain this weekend and took part in races. @penmeeks did the Portsmouth Coastal marathon, Jenny and Sharon did the the Winchester 10km with Maria volunteering and cheering on the runners, Elizabeth @zippyanne did the Phoenix Valentine Half on Friday, Andrew @andrewknightvet and Kate were at Southampton Running Festival in the mud and Elizabeth @zippyanne1 Alice @malice_in_wonderland_x and David @vectisoton were there volunteering. Running races is amazing and gives us highs and lows but volunteering is also a fun day out, you get to see and cheer on many runners from all end of spectrum and just having someone cheer them may be what they need when things are tough as well as cheering them when they are doing well. It gives back to community and you can earn free races too - so I would urge anyone to think about volunteering. Plus we can still wear our vegan runner kit and spread the word. Runstreak for Run Every Day January 2024 done! 31 days of running and a modest mileage of 89.1 miles. The purpose was to break out of the funk I was in where I was too unmotivated to run. Fish on a bicycle! Yesterday, David completed his 150th parkrun at Southampton - whilst not an official parkrun milestone, it still needed to be celebrated! 23 VRs turned out for the occasion, and we walked/ ran with our companions, Simon (with baby Mark) and Maria. As per usual, our friends waited at the end to jump on board the 'Baker bus' for the finish - it's becoming something of a tradition, and I find it quite emotional. We really feel the love on these days. Our friend Lou presented David with a painting of us as 'fish on a bicycle' as she knew it was on his bucket list. We love the attention to detail, including the orange and blue MND colours. We came last! And I couldn't be prouder of coming last. If you finished with a time of 46:12 at Southampton parkrun, you might have another 100 people behind you, but at the much smaller Lymington parkrun, only the volunteer tail walker finished behind us. And we're happy with that 😊 The winter course meant we were lapped by everyone at least once, maybe twice which meant many shouts of encouragement from runners as they passed us and marshals as we passed them. Whilst they can only see how hard it must be to still be running with MND, only David can really know. Yet he's still determined to keep going for as long as he can. What a beautiful morning! It's day 18 of RED January and I got up for a short shuffle across the ice to the trails where it was far easier to stay upright. It was bitterly cold, -5 before the sun came up but it was such a beautiful sunrise, I stood and watched it, growing slowly lighter. When I say I almost cried during this run……this is the first run/jog I’ve done without pain in over six months. I’d started to believe that I’d never run again, but here we are. 😭 My foot is sore, sure, I am in no way 100%, and I have a long way to go to get back to full strength, but my foot isn’t painful….at the moment! Runstreak Day 14. Gorgeous day today, some of the mud swamps were frozen (hooray!), and it was sunny and cold. The light was gorgeous and I spotted two deer as I came out from a railway tunnel. I wanted 8 miles today but cut it short to 6. Legs are heavy and I'm pretty tired still. . Physically running is draining but mentally it's feeling far better. Everyone is posting their end of year running stats and I felt a bit deflated as I thought I'd done barely anything worth mentioning - especially after last year's successes but actually, there's still lots to celebrate. *Time PBs of 4:09 for the km and 6:53 for the mile *A distance PB of 55km at Ultra London *2 x pro pacer at 10km race events *40 parkruns in one year *1 marathon around a tank museum 🥵 All of these achievements are nothing compared to the challenge of just getting through the last six months and we couldn't have done it without our wonderful friends in vegan runners (and my Hamwic friends). That's a wrap for my 2023 running campaign! 1313.5 miles which is a weird number but one I'm pretty pleased with. . I did my second ultra in April and my first road marathon in October. This year was the first year I'd ever focused on a running plan for an extended period of time and it was tough! Keeping it up every weekend, over the heat of the summer, running long runs back to back every weekend. It did pay off though and the marathon I'd trained for felt like a breeze, despite it being a tough course. I now understand why marathoners usually only for 1 maybe 2 events per year...it's such a big commitment, time, head space, energy, appetite...it takes it all! . Since the marathon my running has dipped. I needed the break after a very intense few months of running but then winter hit and I've found it hard to get motivated and back out there in the dark and the wind and the wet weather. . So I'm hitting it with one of my favourite running tools and pulling a run streak out of my back pocket to start 2024. I'll be taking part in run every day January (RED January), planning to cover at least half a mile every single day, for a month. By the end of the month I should have put together my plan for running in 2024 and hopefully have a few events entered. . I've also starting practicing yoga which I haven't said too much about yet...I'm still at the very beginning of that journey but I am absolutely loving it.
