It is not easy for anyone in our grief-phobic society to bear witness to the raw pain that a death has brought to someone. In the early days of deep grief, we need to share our stories... when we repeat them to others, it helps our brains to start catching up to this new reality, one that we are too shocked to comprehend fully for days, weeks, months, or years. However, as much as we need to share and connect with others, we are often met with the usual replies of "they're in a better place," "time heals all," "they wouldn't want you to be this sad," "at least they're not in pain anymore," and so on. While the person will be saying this with the best of intentions, when you are in raw, deep grief, it actually and most often has the opposite of the intended effect. So what do we do when we need to be heard, when we don't have the strength or presence of mind for others to try to 'fix' our pain? We need to be truthful. We need to give the non-grieving person permission to sit back, to relax, and to just listen without needing to say anything at all. "Thank you for being here for me... I know you mean well and you want to fix this, but you can't. I just need to be heard... is it possible for you to listen to what I have to say? You don't have to say anything at all, and it means so much that you're willing to make this time for me." A grieving person does not want to teach others how to respond to them, but unfortunately we live in a death-denying, grief-phobic culture.
