What makes a brilliant book launch? 💭 Is it a fascinating conversation between the host and author that you could listen to for hours? Is it celebrating a genuinely great book that you want to run around telling strangers they must read? Is it finding out that you and the author grew up an hour away from each other or the privilege of being there for an in-person event after the author had two Covid lockdown launches? I don't know what the magic recipe is, but whatever 'it' is, Anna Downes' Red River Road Melbourne launch had it. There was so much love in the room, not just for this genuinely fantastic novel but also for Anna With a witty, insightful and moving conversation (a personal highlight was when Anna spoke about being embraced by the writing community in a country you have migrated to), Red River Road's launch will go down as one of the best book events I've attended

Before the semester ends, I want to share this photo of the fantastic young people who participated in the visiting artist series that @mtsuhonors invited me to lead this spring. These students - some of whom had never written a poem, and many of whom had little to no experience with contemporary poetry - were wonders of creativity and attention. Did I convince all these students- from all different majors - that they are poets? Well, not ALL of them. But from their course reflections, I know they all gained an appreciation for the wide universe of poetry and the power of voice. I know they’ve grasped how art does more to connect us than divide us. And perhaps most importantly, I think they carry the reminder that we are our healthiest, happiest selves when we ease up on the to-do list and let ourselves be creative. This was such a privilege and delight—and, honestly, a lot more work than I expected.😅 All my English teacher friends, you’re shaking your heads at me, I know! The last time I taught in a college classroom was in the 90s—and that was computer science, which was much easier to grade! I hope to write a bit more about this experience soon.
