The Normal is the good smile in a child’s eyes:-alright. It is also the dead stare in a million adults. It both sustains and kills-like a god. It is the Ordinary made beautiful: it is also the Average made lethal. - Peter Shaffer, Equus. Remembering the great playwright - Peter Shaffer - on the anniversary of his birth... “We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep.” - Prospero, The Tempest Today April 23rd is the ageed upon birthday of William Shakespeare, no one knows the exact date of his birth. We do know that he was baptized on April the 26th, 1564 and died in 1616, also on his alleged birthday April the 23rd, aged fifty-two. So today is both the great bard’s birth and death days. Prospero, Shakespeare’s marooned sorcerer-duke protagonist of The Tempest, has been in my head and my dreams. I think this why Prospero is on my mind, he’s emblematic of the artist, who like the sorcerer can through alchemy make something that is entirely new out of seemingly nothing. I think of the characters closest to Prospero as metaphorical aspects of that new art. Ariel the spritely figure of light - Prospero declares of Ariel who he has freed, and yet still controls - “It is mine Art”. And I think of that forsaken figure of shadow - Caliban - of Propero’s two attendants this troubling, misbegotten creature haunts me the most. Is Caliban the disturbing thought we can’t shake - a chimera, a bugbear, a bogeyman that tells us more about ourselves, than all the world’s Ariels? Prospero says of Caliban - “This thing of darkness, l acknowledge mine”. Even Miranda, Prospero’s cherished daughter, his greatest creation, and the one he has the least control of, is a metaphor for a great artwork that outlives us, and has a life beyond the artist. So today I think of Shakespeare with gratitude, as I confront the light and darkness and embrace my inner Ariels and Calibans, dreaming of a Miranda. * Prospero and Miranda (Henry Taylor and Mary Ryan), November 11, 1865, albumen prin, Julia Margaret Cameron Photo 📷 #williamshakespeare #britishpoet #britishplaywright #britishwriter #thetempest #prospero #ariel #caliban #miranda #poethero #wearesuchstuffasdreamsaremadeon

Mark Ravenhill’s Ben and Imo intimately captures Benjamin Britten and Imogen Holst, as they work on the former’s Gloriana, a ‘British national opera’ commissioned to herald in a new Elizabethan era in 1953. Yet it also persuasively captures the cultural anxieties of this third Carolean age, where Holst’s triumph over Britten’s narcissistic cruelty points to a wider conflict between duty to art, duty to respect and duty to country. #benandimo #markravenhill #royalshakespearecompany #swantheatre #stratforduponavon #britishplay #britishplaywright #benjaminbritten #imogenholst #gloriana #opera #britishcomposer #elizabethan #carolean

Book Theme of the Month: Classic Literature Heartbreak House by George Bernard Shaw is a timeless classic that brilliantly dissects the idiosyncrasies of early 20th-century British society. Shaw's sharp wit and insightful social commentary make this play an enduring masterpiece. With its rich characterisation and engaging dialogue, it remains a relevant and thought-provoking read, offering a window into the human condition and societal norms of its time. A must-read for fans of classic literature!

I’ve seen copious productions of @ayckbourn_playwright’s plays, in both the West End and Manchester (where I live), and more recently at the @oldlaundrytheatre in Bowness-on-Windermere, alongside the BBC’s stellar tv and radio adaptations. But, in around 50 years of theatregoing, I’ve never caught any of his plays in his hometown of Scarborough, where many of their world premieres have taken place. The closest I came was his staging of R. C. Sherriff’s WWI play, Journey’s End, at the former Library Theatre in the Yorkshire seaside town. That changes tonight as I attend a performance of Sir Alan’s 89th play at @thesjt, where he was artistic director until 2009. #constantcompanions #stephenjosephtheatre #alanayckbourn #siralanayckbourn #britishplay #britishplaywright #britishtheatre #ukdrama #scarborough #yorkshire

Another Goodreads review for BLOOMING VIOLET. "I had the opportunity to watch a stage reading of this brilliantly written play. It tells the story of Violet Macdonald's life in Great Britain from childhood to adulthood, and the play spans from World War 1 to post World War 2. There was a mix of hard ache, tragedy, hopefulness, and lots of humor, as we were taken back in time to life during that era. There was no back drop or props necessary for the reading, as I could picture exactly how things were at that time from listening to the actors/actresses reading from the pages. I would highly recommend reading this play, and even better if you can watch it being acted out. You will not be disappointed-the writer will have you in stitches." A. Another Goodread review. "Excellently written, it certainly captures perfectly the ups and downs of working class life over two World Wars, Depression and new beginnings. I was born in Yorkshire and can relate to many of the things in the story. True life is often better than fiction and Blooming Violet is testament to that. A cracking good read and highly recommended!" A. Bartle #yorkshire #britishplaywright #bloomingviolet #ww1 #ww2 #emigrate

📚Book Review📚. I read this book again after about 30 years when I studied this play for my A levels and it now appears in the GCSE syllabus. I had forgotten what a prophetic and yet reflective playwright Priestley is. In my opinion, this play holds a mirror up to our current society as well as society of the past. The social comment and ethereal character of The Inspector feel as relevant today as when it was written. It’s well worth a read. My appreciation of this play has grown along with my grey hairs! 🤣 #inspectorcalls #britishplaywright #jbpriestly #goodreadschallenge2023 #schooldays📚

Our latest podcast episode features @olivercrockerauthor sharing a special, personal tribute to actor and playwright, Frank Williams, who passed away June 26th, 2022, aged 90. Frank Williams is of course remembered with enormous affection by generations of Dad's Army fans, but thanks to Oliver, we also learn about his early career on stage, in live television drama and comedy, and in feature films. Oliver generously gifted us some audio of Mr Williams himself, sharing some of his own recollections of life as a working actor, and a real life role on the General Synod of the Church of England. As a young actor and cinema buff, Frank Williams was keen to appear in the movies, and secured work as an extra in some major productions being shot in Britain, including on the MGM epic, Ivanhoe (1952), which starred Robert Taylor, Elizabeth Taylor and Joan Fontaine. Frank Williams enjoyed being part of this unique community of background artists; “…It was quite extraordinary, really…most marvellous set of people, a real cross-section of everybody from old Etonians to people who had just been let out of prison…it was a fascinating group of people, a wonderful group of people…” Join us to hear more from Frank Williams himself, along with Oliver's personal tribute and one or two of our favourite Frank Williams moments in Dad's Army. Listen on our website, dec4podcast.com, or find us on Soundcloud, Spotify, Amazon Music and more. I was a real privilege to work with Oliver to put this together the for the first anniversary of Frank Williams' passing. 🙏 #dadsarmy #dadsarmyfans #britishactors #britishtheatre #britishplaywright #frankwilliams #britishcinema #podcast #filmextras #backgroundartist #britishcomedy

@olivercrockerauthor is one of Britain’s leading and most respected authors, historians, podcasters and publishers on classic British television, whose work on iconic productions like The Bill and All Creatures Great and Small is valued and appreciated as much by the creators as by the fans. He has put together something very special for our latest podcast episode, as we remember actor and playwright, Frank Williams, who passed away June 26th, 2022, just short of his 91st birthday. Frank Williams is remembered with enormous fondness by generations of fans as Timothy Farthing, the perpetually exasperated Vicar in the BBC’s Dad’s Army; on television, radio, stage, and in two feature films separated by almost half a century. Victoria Wood once described Dad’s Army as ‘the most affectionately regarded comedy programme in the history of television’, and Frank Williams made his own unique contribution to that universal love for the programme in all its forms, the characters, and the actors who brought them to life. Oliver joins us to share some personal memories of this incredibly talented, generous and exceedingly kind gentleman, and has also gifted us some very special audio from his own personal archive, of Mr Williams himself, reminiscing about the adventures and misadventures of a working actor from his earliest theatre and film roles, to pioneering and undoubtedly terrifying live-to-air television drama and, of course, Dad’s Army. We also learn about his real life role with the General Synod of the Church of England, and his final, emotional onstage appearance in the West End in 2021, celebrating his 90th birthday. Listen on our website, dec4podcast.com, or Soundcloud, Spotify, Amazon Music and more. Links in the smart-bio. Is this the bank where the wild thyme blows? In collaboration with Royalty Now, we created the A Midsummer Night's Dream luxury candle. It features all of the key aromas represented in Shakespeare's famous scene. Our goal was to recreate the fragrances that Shakespeare specifically cited to transport you to his world and provide the sensorial experience of this aromatic blend created 400 years ago in the Bard's mind. It is reasonable to assume that Shakespeare would have encountered these aromas in his lifetime, which inspired this monologue's detailed olfactive description in A Midsummer Night's Dream. This image was created in celebration of William Shakespeare's 459th birthday. #Shakespeare #WilliamShakespeare #worldshakespeareday🎭 #Midsummer #AMidsummerNightsDream #Bard #BritishPlaywright #BritishPlays #BritishTheatre #Theatre #StratfordUponAvon #history #historylovers #historynerds #historygram #timetravel #timetraveler #oldworld #KLEIO #KLEIOhistory #TheGlobeTheatre --------------------------------------- Conjured with a bit of imagination, help from Shakespeare, and Midjourney

Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) was one of the most famous literary figures of Victorian England. He has some claim to being the greatest British playwright in the 19th century, and plays such as The Importance of Being Earnest and Lady Windermere’s Fan continue to be seen by audiences today. Wilde is also famous for his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, essays, and short stories. However, he was ruined by a trial brought on by his relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas that outraged the very public that Wilde had enthralled with his plays. "Misty," by Nigerian-born British playwright and actor Arinzé Kene, directed by Omar Elerian, at @theshedny. There are just a few shows left (until April 2nd), but from the staging to the stellar performance by Arinze himself in a role that it's not just a thespian tour de force but physically demanding, this is a theatrical gem—an imperative must. Since photos were not allowed, I'm sharing at the end of the slide a great picture of Kene by bronwen.sharp and some I took after the show. This is a fantastic example of using technology, special effects, and props to enhance the mise en scène. Small-cast plays are always acting-centric, but although this one is a One-Man musical with the intense performance of Kene, who overflows the stage, it's hard to ignore the work of the supporting creative team with super-talented musicians Liam Godwin and Nadine Lee, and child actors Ifeoluwa Adeniyi and Braxton Paul. #Misty #arinzekene #omarelerian #mistyNY #gehgeh #theshed #manhattan #manhattanite #hudsonyards #hudsonyardsnyc #britishplaywright #theatre #musical

This holiday week is rolling along, gente! We are at @alecsecareanu Trio Tuesday! This is Alec with, I think, cast member Ria Zmitrowicz, when he was in the #simonlongman play Gundog at the @royalcourttheatre in February of 2018. Look at all his curls! I love the extra two two inches of wrist visible because he’s so tall. And his smile. Sir Noël Peirce Coward (December 16, 1899 – March 26, 1973) was an English playwright, composer, director, actor, and singer, known for his wit, flamboyance, and what Time magazine called "a sense of personal style, a combination of cheek and chic, pose and poise".⠀ ⠀ As a teenager Coward was introduced into the high society in which most of his plays would be set. Coward achieved enduring success as a playwright, publishing more than 50 plays from his teens onwards. Many of his works, such as Hay Fever, Private Lives, Design for Living, Present Laughter, and Blithe Spirit, have remained in the regular theatre repertoire. He composed hundreds of songs, in addition to well over a dozen musical theatre works (including the operetta Bitter Sweet and comic revues), screenplays, poetry, several volumes of short stories, the novel Pomp and Circumstance, and a three-volume autobiography. Coward's stage and film acting and directing career spanned six decades, during which he starred in many of his own works, as well as those of others.⠀ ⠀ At the outbreak of the Second World War, Coward volunteered for war work, running the British propaganda office in Paris. He also worked with the Secret Service, seeking to use his influence to persuade the American public and government to help Britain. Coward won an Academy Honorary Award in 1943 for his naval film drama In Which We Serve and was knighted in 1970. In the 1950s he achieved fresh success as a cabaret performer, performing his own songs, such as "Mad Dogs and Englishmen", "London Pride", and "I Went to a Marvellous Party".⠀ ⠀ Coward's plays and songs achieved new popularity in the 1960s and 1970s, and his work and style continue to influence popular culture. The former Albery Theatre (originally the New Theatre) in London was renamed the Noël Coward Theatre in his honour in 2006.⠀ • ⠀ • ⠀ • ⠀ #authors #authorsofinstagram #writers #author #writersofinstagram #books #bookstagram #writer #writing #writingcommunity #writerscommunity #authorlife #writersofig #writerslife #amwriting #reading #book #booklover #authorsofig #write #authorscommunity #authorslife #bookworm #britishplaywright #noelcoward #drama #theatre

Advent Window 13: Sir Tom Stoppard (born Tomáš Sträussler, 3 July 1937) OM CBE FRSL HonFBA Like Marmite Czech-born British playwright and screenwriter Tom Stoppard is an acquired taste but there's no denying that he's one of the most important, and most internationally performed dramatists of his generation. His work covers the themes of human rights, censorship, and political freedom, and often delves into the deeper philosophical thematics of society. Prolific and brilliant, his most prominent award-winning plays include: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Jumpers, Travesties, Night and Day, The Real Thing, Arcadia, The Invention of Love, The Coast of Utopia, Rock 'n' Roll and Leopoldstadt. Stoppard is also known for numerous screenplays, and these include: Brazil (1985), Empire of the Sun (1987), The Russia House (1990), Billy Bathgate (1991), Shakespeare in Love (1998), Enigma (2001), and Anna Karenina (2012). I wrote to Sir Tom in early 1988 when I was still 13 and he had just finished writing his new play Hapgood, which focused on a British female spymaster (Hapgood) and her juggling both her career and motherhood. The play would star Felicity Kendal and Nigel Hawthorne and was directed by Peter Wood. This was his warm and friendly reply... #sirtomstoppard #tomstoppard #britishplaywright #dramatist #britishdrama #hapgood #felicitykendal #nigelhawthorne #rosencrantzandguildensternaredead #leopoldstadt

Bill Davis’ Smoking Gun Collective production of No Man’s Land offers a classic evening of one of Harold Pinter’s densest, most obscure “comedies of menace.” When Hirst (Jack Rigg) brings an apparent stranger, Spooner (William B. Davis), back to his elegant home—a kind of existential haunted house—the two engage in an oblique battle of wits, threats, and one-upmanship. Hirst’s servants, Foster (Chris Walters) and Briggs (John Prowse), provide additional muscle, but Spooner holds his own through alternating power moves and craven abjection. Poet Spooner’s insistence at the end that “the subject will never be changed” (make of that what you will) suggests a stalemate in the power dynamics. No one wins, nothing is resolved, but the audience goes home having experienced Pinter at his most … well … Pinteresque. The show offers strong acting and as clear a staging of Pinter as you’ll probably ever see. What impressed me most was 83-year-old Davis’ ability to handle pages full of Pinter dialogue, much of it non sequitur, with barely a hiccup of hesitation. Along with fellow octogenarian F. Murray Abraham’s stellar work in the current season of The White Lotus, Davis’ performance is an eloquent counter to the ageism actors face in theatre, TV and film. Come with me to Pinter's No Man's Land. 2 PERFORMANCES LEFT! Get your tickets on my website: https://www.williambdavis.com/nomansland Meet Spooner that I have the pleasure to portray: "My career, I admit it freely, has been chequered. I was one of the golden of my generation. Something happened. I don’t know what it was. Nevertheless I am I and have survived insult and deprivation. I am I. I offer myself not abjectly but with ancient pride. I come to you as a warrior. I shall be happy to serve you as my master. I bend my knee to your excellence. I am furnished with the qualities of piety, prudence, liberality and goodness. Decline them at your peril. It is my task as a gentleman to remain amiable in my behaviour, courageous in my undertakings, discreet and gallant in my executions, by which I mean your private life would remain your own. However, I shall be sensible to the least wrong offered you. My sword shall be ready to dissever all manifest embodiments of malign forces that conspire to your ruin. I shall regard it as incumbent upon me to preserve a clear countenance and a clean conscience. I will accept death’s challenge on your behalf. I shall meet it, for your sake, boldly, whether it be in the field or in the bedchamber. I am your Chevalier. I had rather bury myself in a tomb of honour than permit your dignity to be sullied by domestic enemy or foreign foe. I am yours to command." #theatrevancouver #performingarts #theatrelovers #ensembletheatrecompany #williambdavis #vancouverevents #vancouvertheatre #vancouverwhattodo #vancouverbc #nomanslandvancouver #HaroldPinter #britishliterature #britishplay #britishplaywright @palvancouver @nomanslandvancouver

Christopher Marlowe was a writer and poet in the Elizabethan era, who is often considered to be one of the greatest playwrights of all time. He is best known for his tragedies, which feature themes of doomed love affairs, political intrigue, and tragic heroes. His most famous plays include Dr. Faustus, Tamburlaine the Great, and The Jew of Malta. Though Marlowe's life was short (he died at age 29), he produced a body of work that continues to be treasured by writers and readers to this day. Through his powerful words and dramatic stories, he has earned a place in history as one of the most influential voices of his time. . . #christophermarlowe #beinspired #inspirational #inspiringpeople #poet #theatre #theater #theatrearts #playwright #16thcentury #plays #poem #elizabethanera #elizabethan #britishplaywright #giraffion

"Some people hate my plays; they are not to everybody's taste. I don't think I've ever sat through a production of one of my plays that somebody hasn't walked out of. But I don't do this deliberately. I'm trying to entertain people, I'm not trying to be difficult. I learned a long time ago that playwriting is about communication. It's about trying to communicate something, whatever that is, as clearly as I can. I am probably still learning how to do it." Robert Holman Playwright/Novelist 8/25/1952 - 12/3/2021 Robert was a resident dramatist at both the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), and the National Theatre. Best known for his 1986 play, Making Noise Quietly, his dramatic works mainly focused on the emotional lives of every day people. Beginning in the 1970s his plays have been produced at a variety of venues including the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal Court Theatre, as well as in the West End. In addition to playwriting, Robert is the author of the 1992 novel The Amish Landscape. He died at the age of 69 from cancer.
