We went down to Marylebone to get my glasses fixed, I helped him with some filming for his graphics tee brand, and we had a yummy ramen for lunch! It’s pretty special having one on ones with my teens, sharing things we both enjoy. Not like when they were little and it was just soft play hell! Tomorrow my eldest might come with to the @classiccarbootsale with me! While I was waiting for my son to get something from the car, a young man came up to me and said that I give off a positive aura, he said a few other things along those lines, and I’m thinking what’s the catch here.. then he saids, ‘you have a bad habit tho’. I’m thinking oh, which one.. 😅 ‘You have an open heart, you need to protect yourself and don’t give so much to others’. That really got me because he’s right! I’ve learnt the hard way, especially the last few years, that I give so much of myself to people only to be let down by some. Another friend, said that to me recently too. Whatever that was, it was the most unexpected and random encounter, I thanked him and we said goodbye. It was nice and odd at the same time, and kinda added to my day in a weird way. Our responsibility as citizens doesn’t begin and end on a voting day just by utilizing our voting rights. It is an ongoing process and a collective effort of government, organizations, and citizens. Of course, we are paying taxes, and doing our bit doesn’t mean it is enough. Lately, many people are blaming only governments for not handling the water crisis well across India. But it is not just the governments, all we humans are collectively to blame for climate change and the long, impending water crisis. The responsibility to protect our planet and other sentient beings starts at our homes by generating less waste. To generate less waste, we need to consume less and be mindful by buying only those things that are most important for living, rather than impulse buying. I have always followed minimalism, call me stingy or a saver, but I don’t buy stuff until a dire need arises. If I feel I need something, I always postpone buying it for a month or two, and if I don’t need it during that period it means there is no real need for it. This can be a good practice for people who indulge in impulse buying. It is easy to accumulate materialistic things, but you need to think about where all that stuff is going to end up. New rules on plastics in the EU to be implemented by 2030 ✍️ . A deal has been passed in the EU to eliminate plastic packaging on fruit and vegetables, require to-go restaurants to allow customers’ private cups and containers, and forbid hotels from using small plastic bottles for shampoo, etc. . The EU calls it a historic deal, and I know my friends will ask me to acknowledge these small victories. However, I must also highlight the lack of ambition in this deal. Six years to implement these tiny changes? Really! Moreover, the deal still allows for single-use packaging and the coffee-to-go-cup, that I can never learn to accept. We not only need to reduce plastic use but also cut down on single-use packaging overall. So while we celebrate, we must continue to push for more. Let’s not sit back and wait for politicians to accelerate these changes. As consumers, we must take charge. It’s not ideal, but it’s necessary. I’m a big believer in eco-optimism 🌎 I think more people need to know that our Earth is not beyond saving—but our current brand of capitalism is. We, as Westerners, cannot keep consuming at the rate we collectively do and expect the planet to survive. It is unfair to the communities protecting us from climate change’s most harmful impacts, and it’s also unrealistic. I needed a gentle dose of BFFR to light a fire under my ass, but here we are 🔥 This Earth Day and beyond, I’m committing to building the eco-optimism I need to see in the world by replacing as much of my consumerism as I can with upcycling, mending/repairing, secondhand/refurbished purchasing, and just straight up abstaining whenever possible. Instead, stick with one plan and see how it goes. I started with refusing plastic bags and plastic cutlery. Then I jump into reusing my water bottle. AND I still make mistakes because it is hard sometimes to adjust when we live a certain way, but we can all do it with one step at a time. It’s Earth Day. I wanna say “Happy Earth Day” but it feels false. There are so many bad choices we are collectively making to hurt the planet. Even though I reject the idea of placing the burden on individuals to make better choices when large companies and systemic issues are causing the most harm to the planet, I hope more people will consider the impact of their consumption. Convenience and speed often means taking actions that benefit us in the short run, and harm ecosystems in the long run. Blisscraft is our love letter to the planet, where we insist on taking the time to repurpose, repair, and reduce. Our plant tags are made with recycled copper wire, which we strip, clean and form into something useful. Copper can be recycled - many metals can, because of their economic value. The refining process is still a resource-intensive one, and we are so grateful for our network of electricians who take time to stow away scraps for us, and our customers who make the choice to buy a permanent and recycled solution for their plant labelling needs. Maybe it is a Happy Earth Day after all, cause there are people who care, and I love imagining the gardens full of pollinating perennials, the seedlings for home made veggie plots, and the houseplants for which these plant tags are destined. We are a part of nature and crave to commune with this green and blue and wild planet that is our home. Let’s take action to take care of her better. We asked one of our Trustee Board Members, Tina Solak, owner of @therefillmarketnj in Haddon Township about some small tips in being more conscious of consuming less. We encourage you to ask yourself the following when you find yourself needing to buy something: 1. Do you really need it? Walk away for a couple days or a week and see if you’re still thinking about it. Can you use or repair what you already own? 2. If you really need it, can you: - make it? - borrow it? - rent it? 3. If you need to buy it, can you get it second hand? 4. If you can’t get it second hand, can you - buy it from a sustainable businesses? - buy it from a local small business (small businesses have a smaller carbon footprint than large corporations)? 5. If you can’t get it anywhere besides a large corporation, “choose well, make it last.” Look to buy the most durable version made of the most natural materials available - read reviews to avoid products that are known to break quickly and choose glass and metal over plastic! As we build up to world earth day 🌎 we have been reflecting on the messages and meaning behind building Withnell. One clear thing we have noticed is everything is more expensive when you do it the sustainable way there is no question about that but it also means no one is suffering. I think it’s time more of us challenge systems and break out of the over consumption spiral. When I set up Withnell I had a very clear vision it was to make quality clothing that would last a life time. ✂️ The idea was in years to come the clothing would still be in circulation like quality antiques. I wanted to design and create clothing that gets more beautiful as it’s worn and ages. We have stuck to that ethos religiously and only use natural fibres that eventually will biodegrade🌱some of the best things in my wardrobe are things from in my 20s when clothing was made to last and higher quality. When setting up Withnell I designed out waste from the start I thought carefully about creating a circular system within the business and making to order really limits waste. Any “waste” from our offcuts is repurposed into other products keeping the business circular and also plastic free! We want to keep clothing in circulation as long as possible true heritage pieces. We embroider names into the garments and hope that additional wearers can add their name to the piece. Really excited to be running a workshop on "Upcycling Clothing with Shibori" during Dorset Art Weeks on 2nd June alongside @hawkersrecreatives at Hawkers Farm in Stour Provost. These are a couple of the pieces I have already created from charity shop finds with shibori patterning. This type of workshop is something completely new for me but as mending and saving clothes from landfill are so important for us and the planet I have grasped the opportunity with enthusiasm. It’s Top Tip Tuesday time again folks… Have you ever asked yourself why you buy plastic bin bags to put inside your bin, to collect the rubbish, that you then put inside your main bin to be collected by a rubbish lorry…? How sustainability turned into my passion & purpose. I’ve always loved nature and animals. Amazed by the beauty of nature, and the joy animals bring to our lives. I even had the great idea to become a truck driver to drive the slaughter animal trucks so I could free all those animals (I was very young and naive then 😂). When I grew older, I started to see that our planet isn’t taken good care of. I felt a lot of anger because of this, how could we treat our nature and animals in such a destructive way? At a certain point, I learned that this anger wasn’t going to make any changes in the world. I realized that if I want something to change, it had to start with me! I became a vegetarian at the age of 14 because I didn’t want to eat animals but also because the meat industry has a huge impact on the environment. Through the years I dove deeper into this topic and now I’m using more and more plant based products. I also quit buying a lot of unnecessary things (I had a little problem with that in the past). Now I buy second hand as much as possible, and think twice before I buy something. And of course, my passion for gardening began a few years ago. Besides the happiness it gives me to see new plants grow, I also love the idea of providing myself with food instead of relying on supermarkets. This is also my first step into living a self-sufficient life which helps me to reduce my carbon foot print even more. While I'm constantly learning and improving, I notice how making these changes make me feel like I'm actually making a change. My vision and ideas are growing by the day. When I get to the point of living a life of freedom because of my business, I will dedicate even more time into these ideas. Such as plastic clean-ups, teaching about sustainable ways of living, and helping others to grow their own food. Sustainability starts with you. I believe that we can make this world a better place if we all focus on positive changes, and helping each other. Every small step you take will make a big difference for our planet and your own life. 🌱

For me last Saturday marked a whole year without consuming alcohol. My last drink was a glass of champagne on a work date. Privately I’ve already stopped drinking long before. It’s easy to connect abstinence (from alcohol or other things) with having less, because there is something we are not consuming anymore. But for me, not drinking alcohol actually means having more. More energy, more health, more joy, more capacity for more enjoyable experiences, and more intimacy, because I can feel more when I’m sober. A higher ability to sense my surroundings through my body, because it’s not being numbed. And therefore also more intimacy and deeper connections with the people around me. A heightened ability to let people in and be touched by them. So not drinking alcohol isn’t as much of a loss. Much rather there is a lot to gain from this abstinence and my life feels much richer now. Why was I drinking before though? The last months before I quit it was because I thought I have to when I’m at work. That the clients and the agency expect it of me. But it turned out they all are doing just fine without me drinking. Some are even inspired by it. And before, when I was drinking in my private life? Honestly I think it was about connection. I didn’t have many people in my life that didn’t drink and for so long it was the one thing social gatherings evolved around. And being surrounded by tipsy or drunk people while being sober was just not fun. Because then I didn’t feel connected. It was actually quite frustrating not being able to feel them. But when I did drink I also didn’t truly feel them. I just numbed myself in such a way that I wouldn’t recognize I’m not feeling and being felt. But apparently it was close enough to a feeling of belonging and connection that I kept coming back to it over and over. But it wasn't true intimacy. And back then I didn't even know that that's what I was looking for. I could just notice that I felt lonely. Because I was disconnected from myself and people around me were disconnected from themselves. Continued in the comments...
ᴄᴏɴᴠᴇɴɪᴇɴᴄᴇ ᴀɴᴅ ꜰᴀᴍɪʟɪᴀʀɪᴛʏ I read recently, can’t remember the source, that consumers want convenience and familiarity when it comes to shopping for clothes. Is that why the lure of fast fashion and online shopping trumps over shopping second hand, vintage and ethical brands? How can the latter be marketed to compete more like the former for convenience and familiarity? I’m no expert and I know it all comes down to money. @janeshep made this point at the @positive_retail discussion last week. And she is absolutely right, the sustainable fashion market does not have the money to match the big brands as it is predominately small businesses and charity shops but can something be done to make the sustainable clothing market more convenient and familiar? 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚. I’ve been thinking about this alot. The convenience element is part of what I and many secondhand/vintage sellers do. We source the best bits, clean, mend, refashion items to give them a new lease of life. We do the hard work for the busy consumer. How can we make it more accessible for consumers to buy preloved easier? The @charitysuper.mkt concept works quite well in my opinion. A collaboration under one roof on every high street. Perhaps supermarkets should have preloved concessions? 𝙁𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙮. This is a little more tricky when it comes to second hand clothes as every piece is unique, from a different brand. So consumers may not be familiar with a particular vintage label or ethical brand and may find it too much effort. Most of us know how certain fast fashion brands fit us. When I used to buy new Zara, I just knew how their trousers would fit me. I am a little stumped with this one. In an ideal world, we need a sustainable high street retailer who can be visible next to @marksandspencer, @hm, @zara but again investment is needed. I’d be interested to know what your thoughts are. I think it took us about 20 errors and trials to get this model as efficient and resistant as it is now, and we still think that we could need a metal frame around it to reinforce the wood frame, as we use about 2 tonnes of weight when we press our cars. I spied a plastic free refillable shampoo and conditioner today in Tesco 💚 @wildrefill deodorants smell amazing so I decided to try their haircare offering today for the kids as they aren’t so keen on shampoo bars, and our local @thebodyshop is now closed so we are running very low on their refillable ginger shampoo & conditioner! A little bit of progress. Small progress is still progress. I don't read that often. So I haven't got many magazines and I have just one book (the other one got stolen on holiday). My reading is not that fast, so it is a struggle for me to read a full book. I'm more of a moviewatcher and am thinking to give audiobooks a try. I still enjoy to read the book and am determined to finish it. I give away the book and magazines which I have finished to my mum, friends, facebook giving page, or I will recycle it. In the future audiobooks are a way to enjoy, keep minimalistic, be better for the environment and don't consume to much stuff. Are you book readers, moviewatchers of audiobooks listeners? Recycling hack ♻️ I had a bunch of old towels on my hands so I decided to cut them up and turn them into reusable baby cloths wipes for when I change Luca, replacing traditional baby wipes. Baby wipes are expensive - especially the eco-friendly biodegradable ones, and even the most “natural” ones have chemicals in them. Water is enough to clean babies’ butts in MOST cases, especially when they are teeny tiny, and helps reduce rashes. Think about it, most of us adults only use toiler paper after going to the bathroom, so why put so much on our babies’ super delicate bums when we don’t put anything on ours? I’m using thin towels and water spray to clean baby, thicker towels to pat dry - just make sure they are soft, and the occasional eco-friendly wipe only when needed.
