I’ve found that when it comes to watching movies and TV shows on streaming services, I work better when I create lists and schedules so that I can slowly but surely make my way through my extensive watch lists. This has led me to create a Summer 2023 watch list from now until August! And the first week is dedicated to… Title Characters. “Dumplin’” is a coming-of-age comedy about a plus-sized girl who challenges the beauty pageant world her mother is a part of. “Piggy” is a thriller that shows the main character wrestling with her feelings towards her town bullies that are getting a harsh dose of karma. “Quasi” takes the Quasimodo character and puts him through some ridiculously comedic situations with some ridiculously comedic characters. I have to be honest, I don’t love these movies; there are parts of their stories, characters, and directing techniques that I am not a fan of. However, I don’t hate them either; there are other things they’ve got going for them that are interesting and got a genuine reaction out of me. Ok 👏 first review is a book I’ve read a million times and I still never get sick of. Dumplin’ is an excellent book that gives you this very real feeling and situation that a lot of teenage girls go through. We’re taught by the media that this is desirable and being bigger is not from a very young age. It’s no different for Will who in this book has a mother that has been obsessed with her figure pretty much her entire life. When Bo kisses her she is utterly shocked that such an attractive guy would actually want to be with her, that she pushes him away. Will and Bo’s relationship is a great part of the story but I don’t want to only focus on that. Will’s relationship with Ellen, Hannah, Millie, Mitch, and Amanda is also a crucial part of the book. A few problems I had with the movie adaptation was the fact that 1. Callie is a nice girl which takes away Will’s reasoning for disliking her, 2. Amanda is cut out of the story as a whole, and 3. Mitch doesn’t exist either. The only reason Ellen and Will stop being friends is because Callie is trying to steal Ellen away from Will which causes their fight to happen. Taking Mitch out of the entire plot was a huge mistake because when Will and Bo ‘break up’, we get to see how she acts with another guy (Mitch). In the movie we get absolutely none of that, we just have a weird gap where she has virtually no friends or human interaction outside of her mother. A minute detail that they changed in the movie that I absolutely loathed is the fact that when Millie and her mother get into an argument at the pageant, she says ‘big girls need not apply’ instead of ‘fatties need not apply’. I feel as if the word choice is treating it with kid hands, Millie knows she gets made fun of for being fat and she doesn’t care. Saying ‘big girls need not apply’ is just taking that away from her and giving it this oversaturated Lane Bryant feel.
