This is probably my most anticipated movie of the year, and even though Exhuma gave me 2016's The Wailing vibes, I knew this was going to be a very different beast on its own. The story revolves around four characters who come together, a Geomancer, a Mortician, and two Shamans who need to properly remove a coffin from a bad gravesite. The family’s eldest son recently had a newborn baby who contracted a mysterious illness, and they believe that their buried grandfather is the cause for this. This is later confirmed by the Shamans who identify the curse to be a ‘Grave’s Call’, which is a vengeful Ancestor’s Spirit who haunts the eldest son of the family. In order to properly move a coffin, a ritual must take place, and this is probably the best scene in the movie. The chanting, dancing, drumming, and singing, alongside the cutting and slashing of animals, blood being spilled everywhere…it’s all just so mesmerizing and chaotic. Eventually, things take a turn when the Spirit is released from the coffin, and it’s up to the protagonists to undo their mistake and get the Spirit back to where it belongs. The various scenes of supernatural occurrences, spirit possessions, sleep paralysis, etc. are displayed differently from what the audience may be used to from other movies, but kudos to Director Jang Jae-hyun for implementing so many great and unique ideas with his take on the Supernatural. Exhuma is actually two different stories, and halfway through, Japanese folklore takes place front and center, and now this isn’t the movie we thought it was going to be. However, this is more than just a ghost story, this is a story from history when Japan ruled over Korea, and the consequences that later take shape. No spoilers ahead, but the first act is about a vengeful Spirit, reluctant on ending their bloodline, and in the second act we are introduced to something far more vicious and far more sinister. Do yourself a favor and watch Exhuma, not only does it have a great cast of characters, great ideas, and a great storyline, but you will appreciate the Director’s approach of trying something new and showcasing the mysteries and occult elements that he brings to the big screen.

LILYA 4 - EVER Lukas Moodysson is top tier for adolescent musings
Not many have people heard of The Childe, which is a South Korean action thriller film that was definitely under the radar last year. The story revolves around two main characters from both of their perspectives. The first character introduced is Nobleman, an assassin who gives us a brief glimpse of his brutality and skillsets in the opening sequence. The second character is Marco, a "Kopino" boxer who lives in the Philippines, and participates in underground boxing matches to earn money to take care of his sick mother. Fun fact: The term Kopino is a person of mixed Korean and Filipino descent. Continuing with the story, Marco tries to find his biological father and travels to Korea, because his mother is dying and he desperately needs money to pay for her operation. Nobleman is also hot on Marco's trail, and from there, we get an intense cat-and-mouse thriller which includes pursuits, evasions, and so many close calls. The question is, why is Nobleman after him and what is his end goal? In a surprise turn of events, Marco is then saved by a third party who is also looking for him, which turns out to be his half-brother, Han. Now I won't get into details of why Han is looking for Marco, but just know that he has a different goal in mind than Nobleman. Director Park Hoon-jung, who is known for his work as the screenwriter of I Saw the Devil, and the director of the gangster flick New World, has a certain style with his films, because if you've seen the two, then you know that they're both very dark and gritty, and that's what the audience should be expecting here. There is a bit of action throughout the film, but saving the best for last comes towards the end, a very well-choreographed violent and bloody shootout that involves both Nobleman and Han. After the dust settles, all is revealed and it's a twist that no one sees coming. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie because it kept me on my toes, questioning everything and the intentions of everyone involved. This is a definite must-watch, and if you do, just know that there is a mid-credit scene that you don't want to miss! OVERALL-RATING: 🐼🐼🐼🐼

With the upcoming anticipated release of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, I just wanted to remind moviegoers that there is also another Godzilla film that may be even better than this one. Godzilla has always been portrayed as a villain in previous Japanese movies, and in the case of Godzilla Minus One, he is the ultimate villain! The story is told through the perspective of a guilty-conscience man named Koichi, who is a disgrace because he did not fulfill his role as a "Kamikaze Pilot" and fled the war. Years pass by and he now has a family, but eventually his past comes back to haunt him, not only as a deserter, but also the monster Godzilla, who he previously had an encounter with long ago and was the only survivor of the monster's attack. Godzilla is seen terrorizing the city nearby where Koichi lives, and we see the aftermath of destruction the monster leaves. The Japanese Government needs to stop Godzilla before it destroys all of Japan, and they recruit the ex-pilot Koichi to help stop the monster once and for all. The story about a man atoning for his past and doing everything he can to save the ones he loves...who knew that a Godzilla movie could be an emotional one? The spectacular visual effects is what makes Godzilla come to life, and it's no wonder the VFX team won an Oscar for their work. Even with the small budget they were given, they did an amazing and outstanding job that puts some bigger budget movies visuals to shame! Not only with the visuals, but the musical score and sound effects were exceptional as well. The Composer Naoki Sato brings despair and tragedy to the ears of the audience, which is very fitting for the tone of the film. The haunting sounds of destruction and the roars of the monster is definitely terrifying to say the least. Overall, Director Takashi Yamazki's Godzilla Minus One is a force to be reckoned with, and even though it may not have a hundred million dollar budget like other Kaiju movies, it blows them out of the water with it's captivating story, intriguing characters, superb visuals, and a very dark version of the King of Monsters, this is definitely a must-watch!!! Best Godzilla film to date. This is how Godzilla is done. The story plot of this movie is what makes for a perfect Godzilla movie. It's a story about defeat, loss, despair, forgiveness, family, and hope. Was not expecting the human drama to be as great as it is and it's certainly the best of the franchise and that's a huge achievement when it comes to Godzilla movies. You actually care about the characters and root for them as they tackle their own personal issues during post-war Japan. Godzilla is a true villain here. He's a devastating force. When Godzilla shows up and you see the destruction he leaves it's just perfect and it really shows the embodiment of what Godzilla really is. The visuals and CGI are amazing. The CGI in this film is the best for any TOHO Godzilla film and even looks as good as the Hollywood Godzilla films for only a fraction of the budget. The use of the Ifukube theme is amazing and always a good treat. This movie tugged on all the right emotional strings and showed no mercy. 2007 - [Rec] is one of the best found footage movies out there. I wanted to watch this for a long time now and so tonight I finally decided to put it on as I'd recently got the Arrow Video Blu-ray and I thought it was bloody fantastic. It really is Top Tier in the found footage genre, that part of it works extremely well and it felt real watching it. You know its a movie but but it felt real watching it with all the excellent performances and the reactions of these people. The movie was amazing and once it starts it doesn't let you go, I was glued and there was never ever a dull moment. It was a Thrill ride at times and it felt like I was there as I didn't know what was going on or what was going to happen but then whilst watching it I'd realised I watched the American version of this first, even watching that one first I was still very engaged as the movie hooks you and the original is always better so it was fine. The movie is one of the best horrors from the 2010's hands down, it was excellently crafted and everything was just perfect creating the atmosphere and building it up to make it a tense thrilling ride. City of God - Pt1 This had been on my list for time and I was hearing very good things about it. Definitely didn’t disappoint. Released in 2002, the film takes place in the ruthless Favelas of Brazil and is kinda a coming of age story but it’s also showcasing the “City of God” and a story about the environment these characters are growing up in. Firstly, technically this movie is great. It’s shot kinda like a documentary, mostly hand held camera shots with various different angles and shot types. Also the colouring and cinematography of the movie stands out, allowing the film to have it’s own unique style. The setting begins more light coloured which then slowly becomes a more gloomy, darker blue colour as the story progresses. The stand out technical feat of the film was definitely the editing, it’s very engaging and you notice it from the very first scene which is cut very roughly and there’s various speed changes which continue throughout the movie with other techniques being incorporated like split screens etc. There’s the room montage scene explaining the origins of a room which I don’t think i’ve ever seen done before which was hard. Scenes often begin during the middle of the action so the story’s always constantly moving and there isn’t really any filler. As a result of the doc style filming and great acting the film feels very real and raw. It’s like it’s all actually happening it doesn’t really feel like a film. The best example of it for me is when Lil z shoots the little kid in the foot, the scene is crazy. It had me genuinely thinking this yute just got his toe blown off. Above all, it effectively translates the growing sense of financial doom most of us feel in todays world. Bong Joon Ho understands our resentment and anger and says everything on behalf of us. The film is also a feast for the senses. The symmetry and colour presented in each frame is a wonder to behold. The camerawork is smooth, seamless stuff that really highlights the work of the cast, as well as the film’s few locations. The music syncs up perfectly, being composed of classical music or eerie, atmospheric pieces that enhance the happenings on screen. The pacing allows us to grow attached to these people and immerse ourselves in this world, but never loses its momentum or drifts away from the story it’s telling. Mesmerizing stuff. “Parasite” is deserving of all the acclaim it has received since its release. It’s a relevant, important masterclass in filmmaking that reveals more layers each time you watch it. Jetlag hit me stright in the jaw!! 🥴 I was feeling so drained the whole week, but now, I'm currently resting, reading 📚 working on the next thing, and while I was doing the script reading I came across one of the movies we made a few years ago #Gringa I wasn't expecting to get credited because I only made it to pre-production, but I am featured on the film! 🥰🤯🎞 💛 It was very cool start the movie with this foreign crew, my boss was amazing and I laughed a lot with the team. I also got reunited with the person who gave me an opportunity for the first time in this business JMSchivy (incredible boss and person 👏) but also the director EJ Foerster, it was dream being on the same table and listen him direct the heads of departments, geez, best part of my job is when I get the chance to learn straight from them.
