GOD'S LITTLE ACRE; Newport, Rhode Island The section of Newport’s Common Burying Ground, known as “God’s Little Acre,” is the largest colonial-era African cemetery in the country. The segregated portion of this historic public cemetery contains nearly 300 enslaved and free Africans and African Americans graves. Deceased slaves often got second billing. At the time, only the wealthy could afford carved slate headstones. Many of the noteworthy markers, including this headstone, were cut by enslaved African stonemasons. This slate marker is thought to have been carved by a prolific enslaved artisan named Pompe, who worked in his enslaver John Steven’s shop. Newport being a bustling shipping port in the 18th Century, many enslaved African children were apprenticed to craftsmen and artisans to learn trades that were in demand locally, from shipbuilding and carpentry to silversmithing and chocolate grinding. Newport, at the time, was a major chocolate manufacturing center. The climate and soil in the area were not as conducive to commercial agriculture as in the South. I should have known better. I read Caldwell’s Tobacco Road several years ago, and did not enjoy it. But I did not foresee that I’d dislike this book even more. When I want gritty tales of mankind downtrodden by economic woes and harsh lives (which I often do!), I will read Steinbeck, Zola, Sinclair, Dickens, or many others. The difference between their works and this one is that you put down this book feeling not sympathy, but loathing, for this particular group of downtrodden folks. This is the footstone of Mintus Brenton at God’s Little Acre in Newport. Sadly, his headstone was badly damaged (I’m not even sure it’s still there. I didn’t see it.). He died in 1774 at the age of 52. Before it was damaged, his headstone bore a beautifully carved and unique death head, with the face turned slightly toward being in profile. These are the Black people who lived in the City by the Sea. They are the enslaved Africans taken from what’s now known as the Republic of Ghana, given new names that wiped out their identities, shipped to a new country and put to work in homes, farms, shops, and at the docks. They are laid to rest with fellow slaves instead of their families — even children, such as Pompey Lyndon, who died in slavery at 28 months and nine days old in 1765, and whose small headstone was carved by another enslaved man. They are the Africans who purchased their freedom from owners, bought their children from slavery, and established themselves in the community. Duchess Quamino was a slave who secured her own freedom through her culinary skills and made the plum cakes adored by George Washington.
