Ok Day 1: The Convert 2023 UK, Australia & New Zealand Well, that was so much better than I thought it would be. Guy Pierce is great, grizzly and gritty as a lay preacher (apparently from London via Melbourne) travelling to untamed 19th century New Zealand to work for a tiny, newly established ‘British’ town. He’s there to give spiritual guidance to the white folk, though he is more interested in changing Māori minds. It’s beautifully made, the landscapes all vast yet hidden, and the performances are great (standout is Tioreore Ngatai-Melbourne, the girl on the horse in Hunt for the Wilderpeople), and it tells of ways Europeans interfered with local warfare, selling guns to the tribes, aiding the bloodshed and its vital and important, but with its desire to be as authentic as it can, it sort of forgets to entertain. It’s very very dry, earnest and serious and feels more like a history lesson. It would be a perfect Sunday afternoon film to watch with your Dad. The action scenes give it some welly, and a few spurts of blood here and there helped take me out of its weight. Memento Steelbook added to collection. Finally managed to pick this gorgeous steelbook up from @101filmsuk @101films. I wanted this when it released and I had it pre ordered but money being tight at the time and I just couldn't afford it. Even though I could have actually pulled the trigger on it a few times since then I just couldn't seem to. Well I finally did. And I have notes. The slip is ok. Not amazing but decent. Shows a lot of folds which I personally don't rate. Secondly. While the spot gloss design on the actual steelbook is really good. Mine at the very least has several imperfections in the finish. Only tiny ones but like enough that I see them. I mean I have seen the same things on premiums too so it's not like it 101 are the only steels that have imperfections, it's a much wider issue. The other things I don't like. The Polaroids don't feel like Polaroids imo. Granted it has been a long time since I held one. Still it feels like a printed photo of a Polaroid if that makes sense. Even the white border. And the bonus disc is in a weird card holder like it's a package. An interesting concept but I'd prefer the disc be in a plastic tray. Man it really feels like I'm shitting on this release. And honestly I am really happy to have it in the collection. I can't wait to do an updated Nolan collection post. Curtis Hanson's 1997 crime film, based on the novel by James Ellroy, is one of particular intrigue and quality, thanks to a very well-constructed, mysterious story, as well as the fantastic performances of its three leading men. Said-intricate story builds particularly well in the last 45 minutes, through the third act and into the final climactic throws of the film. The twist was, admittedly, a little predictable - at least to me. That said, it worked well and it wasn't nonsensical or anything, which are always the worst twists. Guy Pierce has moments in which he is phenomenal as the film's lead, but also a couple where I was marginally disappointed that he didn't show even more of his acting capabilities. Russell Crowe provides an excellent foilistic character for Pierce to work off, and, in my view, out-does him. Crowe was fantastic, and encapsulated the gritty elements of the film perfectly. I hate talking about Kevin Spacey, but when it comes to 90s and 00s cinema, he so often appears that it's unavoidable. Even more hatable is how good an actor he is, because, as usual, he is very good here. James Cromwell could have been a lot more memorable than he ended up being, although it is worth saying that he wasn't unexceptional by any means, but he failed to live up to his character's potential. The film also features solid performances from Kim Basinger and, of all people, Danny Devito, both in supporting roles. Overall, this was a classic crime thriller that had me invested for the whole two hours, through a keenly written story and some phenomenal acting performances. (L.A.
