Intermittent fasting?? I have been adding this to my first coffee of the day and then pushing back breakfast to get my eating window down to as close to 8 hrs a day as possible and can see the difference. This added to coffee in the morning enables me to last longer and stay in ketosis for longer. What you need to know about stress part one! your bodyโs stress response is still back in the hunter gatherer times. our bodies are not equipped to handle modern day problems. Thousands of years ago, we would have a major stressor that would only last short time (like being chased by a lion. He would either escape or you would die and it was over either way.) nowadays, we have stressors every single day such as traffic jams, deadlines at work, social media, the news and so on. with all of this consistent and chronic stress, we are constantly pumping out cortisol because our body doesnโt know the difference between physical, emotional, and completely imaginary or made up stress. cortisol is a lot like insulin in the fact that with insulin when you eat, your sugar levels rise, your body releases insulin to handle this. But if you eat too much sugar, too often, your insulin receptors become less responsive and it takes more insulin to create the same reduction in blood sugar levels overtime. with cortisol, your body has a similar response. if you chronically release cortisol to control your stress levels, it takes more and more cortisol to create the same reduction in stress. Overtime, this burns out your adrenal glands and puts you into a constant state of fight or flight mode. It is likely that you are aware that eating a balanced diet can help you to live longer. It may surprise you to learn that the benefit of eating healthily is not limited to your younger years but can be seen in your later years of life too. A new study investigated the effects on life years in 467,354 participants who switched their eating patterns from unhealthy to a healthier diet. Each participant completed a food frequency questionnaire and or a twenty-four-hour recall at the start of the study. The researchers put participants into groups based on the amount of thirteen different foods. These were wholegrains such as wholegrain pasta, couscous, rice, wholegrain crackers, wholegrain bread, and oats. Also, fruit, vegetables, nuts, legumes, fish, eggs, milk and dairy products, red meat, refined grains, processed meat, white meat, and sugar sweetened drinks. Researchers then investigated the effects of all causes of death and whether switching from an unhealthy diet to the diet from UKโs Eatwell Guide was associated with a higher life expectancy. The diet which was linked to a longer life expectancy contained higher amounts of milk and dairy products, and vegetables. Moderate amounts of wholegrains, eggs, fish, fruit, nuts, legumes, and white meat. Thirdly, lower amounts of red meat, processed meat, refined grains, and sugar sweetened drinks. The unhealthy diet pattern contained high amounts of processed meat, red meat, eggs, refined grains, sugar sweetened drinks. Low amounts of vegetables, fruit, legumes, nuts, fish, milk and dairy products, white meat, and wholegrains. It was estimated that switching from a less healthy eating pattern to a healthier eating pattern may increase a 40 year oldโs life expectancy by 8 years. The benefit of a diet switch from less healthy to healthy in a 70-year-old person was associated with an increase in life expectancy of 4 years. By specifically switching from a less healthy eating patter to the UKโs Eatwell Guide diet this increased a 40-year-olds life expectancy by six to 7 years and by 3 years in an adult aged seventy years. I'm watching a @netflix series called Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones. Despite being 45, people often assume I'm a lot younger because of my baby face, which I can thank my Mum's good genes for, as well as drinking enough water to drown a whale. Obviously eating well (most of the time) and sticking to a regular exercise routine has helped me to stay looking physically young, but I think more important than that is to keep your mind fresh and youthful - with challenges, new experiences and most importantly, fun. A Chinese study has suggested that social activities can factor in to leading a long life! The Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health published a study of over 28,000 individuals. Participants aged 60 and over were surveyed using the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) and then asked about their social activities.
