Ficção Americana é um filme que brinca com os estereótipos da sociedade. Monk é um escritor negro brilhante, mas seus livros não são populares já que ele se recusa a retratar negros de forma estereotipada em seu trabalho. Ele é pressionado por seu editor a criar uma obra comercial e escreve uma história carregada de preconceitos como piada. A sociedade tem uma forma de colocar pessoas em caixas, por exemplo: "negros falam desse jeito", "gays tem que ser assim", "mulheres tem que falar desse jeito", "homens não podem ser assim", além de milhares de outros estereótipos. O filme faz as pessoas refletirem sobre isso, Jeffrey Wright traz um personagem incrível e controverso que não tem medo de chocar o expectador. Algumas pessoas que usam muito o politicamente correto são mais preconceituosas do que as que não usam, pois são forçadas a mostrar isso em sociedade e o filme não tem medo de mostrar isso. Leslie Uggans como a mãe de Monk estava divina, o que era de se esperar de uma atriz incrível. Sterling K. Brown entregou um personagem complexo e bem construído como Cliff, irmão de Monk, que foi incrivelmente inserido na trama. Além de todo o restante do elenco que entregou ótimas atuações e não deixaram a desejar. Tonight’s @cineworld #SecretScreening was ‘American Fiction’. @cordjefferson makes his directorial debut with this witty and layered satire that is an examination on the publishing industry and a critique on African-American stereotypes in today’s mainstream media. @jfreewright gives a fantastic lead turn amidst a great ensemble. Dutch. Dutch (Ed O'Neill) offers to drive his girlfriend's son Doyle (Ethan Randall) from his private school in Atlanta to his mom's in Chicago for Thanksgiving. Only saw this John Hughes written road comedy once as a child before watching it again last night. Ed O'Neill is fun in the lead, who is like a big kid, there are plenty of funny moments, his singing of I'm so lonesome, I could cry while driving, the scene when he is playing with fireworks is real good, and his shoe flying off and hitting him in the head. Doyle and what happens after he gets the keys to the car is hilarious, that situation had me laughing plenty of times, as did their over night stay in a homeless shelter with what happens to Dutch's bed that keeps waking up the others trying to sleep. Plus, there is some drama too where Ed O'Neill got to show off more dramatic chops a bit compared to what he was known for on tv at the time of this film's release. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Ed O'Neill and Ethan Embry, named Ethan Randall here would go on to co-star as the two leads in the two season long 2003 version of the tv series Dragnet. Unfortunate that this film was not only poorly received by many critics, this was a box office bomb. Released in July of 1991 from 20th Century Fox, the budget was $17 million, with a box office of $4 million, and opened at the number 10 spot opening weekend, terrible. It did go on to get a little bit of a cult following after it's release on VHS. "What do you like to do for fun? You like to wiggle and grunt? Jumped on some interest I’ve had for awhile & got the first season of the short lived but cult popular #darkangel which of course was an early vehicle for a young #jessicaalba, who I previously hadn’t been too into or seen much of but gotta say I’m quite taken with her as #maxguevara, a genetically enhanced superhuman who was experimented on in a military facility as a child. We find her in a #dystopian future as she battles corruption & evades capture from a secret government agency tied to her past. I’m a few episodes in & I gotta say I’m quite surprised & am impressed. This was a creation of #jamescameron so the future state of the world like this is well depicted with a solid amount of money behind it with good sets & a fine attention to detail of the world the characters are in. This may be making me quite a big fan of Alba now, she was only 18/19 years old when she did this but she shows early star power in both her surprising physical ability with showing an acting range that holds better than anticipated. #michaelweatherly is very good here too with a nice chemistry with Alba. I haven’t seen him yet but I know the great #jensenackles joins the cast later. #johnsavage is an easy fit as one of our primary baddies, I also like #jcmackenzie, #jenniferblanc & #valerieraemiller. Shows like #buffythevampireslayer & #angel are among my top few shows ever & this series seems like it was in the same vein during that era with style, self aware campiness, some comedy, witty dialogue & delivery, solidly choreographed fight scenes while also having meaningful characters worth investing in.
